| ARTISTS INVESTMENT IN OILS PAYS OFF
While losses of lifetime investments in financial markets may have become the daily source of doom and gloom reporting, the product of Kingfisher artist SUE MILLERs 25-year investment as an oil painter is still bright and is currently on display at the FRONTIER COUNTRY HISTORICAL MUSEUM, in Crescent. For 23 of those 25 years, Miller worked in the Kingfisher Public Schools, teaching and assisting in art-related classes, after which she claims to have retired. Miller may have taken retirement from teaching art full-time, but that doesnt mean she has retired her paintbrushes or oil paintsor even her teaching skills. Now, however, she paints primarily for fun and relaxation. Miller had always wanted to paint, but figured she needed to wait until her two children were half-way grown, and was not sure she could afford the expense of oil paints. Instead of hesitating, however, Miller jumped into art, taking some vo-tech classes and several workshops on oil painting. Early-on, she realized the importance of knowing how to draw first. So, Miller taught herself how to sketch, in order to capture the image she was wanting to create. Now she always develops a pencil sketch, before committing any oil to canvas. Although people-portraits are her preferred theme --likely encouraged by being a grandparent four times over-- she has found herself doing more landscapes, of late. Kingfisher has been Millers home for the past 31 years, before which her husbands work with the Soil Conservation Service had kept them on the move --having previously lived in Medford and a number of other towns. Miller has developed an art center, using space she has rented from the First Christian Church Annex in Kingfisher, where she is able to work with students and adults, passing on her painterly knowledge, skills and inspiration. A meet-and-greet public reception for artist Sue Miller will be held on Sunday, September 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the FRONTIER COUNTRY HISTORICAL MUSEUM, located at 500 N. Grand, in Crescent, at the intersection of S.H. 74 and 74-C. The display of Millers artworks will remain at the Museum through October, 2008. MUSEUM hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays, closed on Mondays. For more Information, phone the Museum at 405-969-3660. |
