June Wilson - Painting Oil With Oil

A New Artist For A New Year.. And A Meet & Greet, To Boot!

Drilling rigs and oil field history have fascinated artist JUNE WILSON ever since her Crescent high school years, when the business was booming, inspiring her to create a series of largescale oil paintings documenting Oklahoma crude, from it's early days to the present.

Wilson's oil field art and other works are currently on display at the FRONTIER COUNTRY HISTORICAL MUSEUM, in Crescent, through the end of February `07.

Wilson credits her dad -Everett Keele- with initially sparking her interest in oil drilling -although he was primarily involved with water wells, she says he also had an "old, old" oil rig. Wilson was reminded of this when she happened upon a book of historical photos of drilling rigs, which inspired her to begin documenting the oil patch in paintings.

Most of Wilson's works are focused on pre-1930-era rigs -some involving the Bartlesville field, around 1900.

Following her school days here, Wilson moved to California, where she lived for an extended period, only returning to Crescent within the last 2 years, during which time she has been busy working to create her art studio, as well as trying to track down photos and information on the first oil well drilled in Logan County -the McCully Well, in the northern part of the county- and the first Crescent-area rig.

Not wanting to limit her creativity, Wilson expresses herself in a number of artistic media and styles, including acrylics and pastels, in addition to oil paints, with landscapes being her primary subject.

An opportunity to `Meet & Greet' artist JUNE WILSON, and view the exhibition of her art, is set for Sunday, February 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the FRONTIER COUNTRY MUSEUM, located at the intersection of State Highways 74 and 74C, in Crescent. Phone 405-969-3660, for more information.
