ROTARY TRAINING NOTES from Peter M

As June is Rotary Fellowships Month, are members aware of the many and varied Rotary Fellowships that are available to any of us. While there are the “expected” types of Fellowships, i.e. Fellowship of Golfing Rotarians, Fellowship of Caravanning Rotarians etc, there are also some other Fellowships available that are not as well known.

I am, and have been a member of the Poultry Vocational Fellowship of Rotarians for over 5years. While only a small group we are spread around the world with a newsletter produced by the Chairman of the Fellowship based in Pune, India.

I am also a member of the International Fellowship of Running and Fitness Rotarians.

I have been in this Fellowship since 1983 and when travelling in the US with the family in the mid 80’s spent a few days with one of the members in Toledo Ohio.

This Fellowship has organised a run at the International Conventions for many years and I have already had correspondence with our Chairman, Harold Friend re organising an event in Brisbane next year.

If you have a particular interest or hobby, and with the communications now available to us, join a Fellowship and enjoy both your interest and the chance to meet with other Rotarians.

Australian clubs send tools to East Timor

Since it became the world's newest democracy with the proclamation of national independence on 20 May, the half-island territory of East Timor faces the Herculean challenge of development after years of armed conflict and centuries of foreign occupation.

Although Rotary does not yet maintain an official presence in the tiny new nation of 800,000, dozens of Rotary clubs are pitching in to help the East Timorese through numerous World Community Service projects. In these worthy efforts, the Rotary clubs of Hawthorn and Gisborne from Victoria, Australia, are quite literally providing the tools to help the people of this young nation, one of Asia's poorest, to rebuild their economy.

The two clubs recently coordinated a toolbox donation for East Timor. Working with the manager of a local hardware store, club members arranged a community drop-off point and promoted it in the local newspaper. After a two-month drive, more than 60 toolboxes including many screwdrivers, saws, and hammers were donated for shipment to East Timor.

"It was mostly old tools, but some people purchased new tools and left them there," said Keith Hallett of the Rotary Club of Gisborne. "There were complete sets of sockets."

Both of the clubs footed the A$3,000 (US$1,550) bill to send containers packed with the tools to Dili, the East Timor capital.

Hallett is also the local president of Oxfam CAA (Community Aid Abroad), a voluntary community-based organization in Australia, which helped the clubs establish contact directly with a village near Dili. Working with Oxfam CAA, the clubs also later started wider collections in the community, for items such as school pencils.

With this shipment already in East Timor, Hallett said the club is looking for ways to "widen the person-to-person, community-to-community contact that gives aid the human face it needs."

Ohio, USA, Rotarians encourage understanding, community harmony

Shortly after last September's attacks on the United States, the 437-member Rotary Club of Columbus, Ohio, USA, reached out to the local Muslim community. "We were concerned about possible intimidation of and personal injury to individuals," says Philip Gubbins, the club's executive director. At one weekly meeting, the club hosted a round-table discussion with 30 Muslim leaders. According to Gubbins, many club members described it as one of the most significant programs that they had ever participated in. After the meeting, Muslim leaders invited Rotarians to attend an iftar dinner, breaking the fast at sundown during the holy month of Ramadan.

On 29 December, a group of vandals ransacked a local mosque, causing $100,000 of damage. In response, the Columbus Rotarians wrote a letter to the Columbus Dispatch that was published in the 6 January edition of the newspaper. In the letter they denounced the incident and encouraged "understanding and respect for the opinions and dignity of others."

Following the incident, Rotarians met with mosque members to review the extent of the damage and determine how they could help. Says Gubbins: "Club members are now assisting the leadership of the mosque in working their way through the maze of insurance papers and damage estimates."
