Snorkel
After filling up
the air filter with mud a few times I decided it would
be wise it install a snorkel . I had gotten away with not blowing the
motor but it was only a mater of time before I got in over my head
( or bonnet as the case may be ) . The existing air filter housing has
holes in it , I guess to let any water drain out that does get in there ,
not a good thing when you are stuck in a river or mud hole for any
length of time . So that had to go as well . It could not protrude
outside the body line as it would just get ripped off and I did not
want it to block the drivers view ( Right hand drive down here ) . So
it had to go out the left side of the engine bay . All the snorkels on the market I could find went out the right hand side and sat outside the body
line so I was going to have to make one . After a quick trip to the plumbing store I was armed with some drainage and spouting pipe and went
to it . There was a big enough area on the left to mount a new filter housing and after cutting the end off the standard black air duct on top of the
carb and welding it back on at a new angle I could run the hose over the top of the engine . Unfortunately I have to remove the intake hose to fill
the engine with oil , something I have to do more often than I should . Anyway I then got a custom filter made to go inside the housing , this was
a lot cheaper than I thought it would be , in fact about the same price as a original filter . It is a re-usable foam filter with a removable outer
sleeve , two supplied with the filter so a spare can be carried in the truck on trips .

After a bit of hunting in the down pipe section I found a 115 deg bend which is very close to the angle of the windscreen . At this stage I had two
options , cut a hole into the firewall and up or up through the bonnet and out . Well the bonnet was less work and easier to return to normal so
that won out . You will look at the pic and wonder why it stops at the bottom of the screen , well if the snorkel runs all they way up the hood
hits it whenup , it blocks vision and is not needed most of the time . The top "u" section just slides on and can be slid off and a straight piece added
to it . This is not strictly air tight but pretty good and I figure that if sufficient water gets in there to full the filter housing ( large area to fill before it
gets sucked in ) then the electrics would have died by then . I have yet to find any water in it .
