Today I have a picture to show one thing that surprised me when I saw women with these trays on their head balancing a huge amount of fruits and vegetable the streets and selling them. Can You imagine with the heat from the sun and humidity while selling these things.
Heres' how its works: Everyday they get up about 4 in the morning and go to their local open market where all the fresh vegetables and fruits are sold. The price in these market are very cheap and most of the time the merchant has credit with them so they can get what they think they will sell and be able to pay the next day or what ever form of payment is agreed. These market places are in what they call some type of plaza but nothing like ours. They are dirty, full of many little tables prepared to sell this type of articles. Noisy because of so many people bargaining prices, buying and selling. Its some riot place! Those who sell in those market places are also up very early to prepare there tables for all these people that come to fill up their trays to get out and make their day to hopefully make enough to survive part of a day plus the local poeple that go and buy there to... Its cheap and fresh goods. These market places are also up before the "machantas" as they are called, because they have to buy from the trucks that come in and sell to them(market). As you can imagine the trucks come from those that go to farm lands and buy off the land. The owners come to sell their products also. So as you can see there is a simular pattern of marketing but very informal. No taxes, no control just just a hassel to make another day.
There merchants come in handy because since the cooking major time is for lunch in the DR you have the opportunity to buy from these people who on the hold buy the major items for the Domincan meal. " Which is one of the things I will talk about one day." As you can figure out usually these items are more expensive than in the market but it is very convienent since you too can get credit and have what you need just for that day. This system is good for those that don't have much money and also live day by day, plus don't have a refridgerator to keep all the vegetables needed to cook.
Well thats all folks ! Until tomorrow. Take care.
