Part 1

I Believe – By Stephen Gately

If I believe that I could do anything
Could I, spread my wings and say goodbye
So many people told me I couldn’t win
But look at me now
Here I am in heaven’s sky

And sometimes I say a prayer
Wishing that you could be here with me, ‘cause I believe

I believe in love, it’s the best of everything
I believe in hope and the changes it can bring
If you believe then nothing can stand in your way
Just say, I believe

If hope’s the house I wanna be living in
Well I’ve got one foot in the door
All the years of waiting for your approval dear
Well I realised I don’t need it any more

‘Cause I’m stronger everyday
Now I’m strong enough to say, I believe

I believe in love, it’s the best of everything
I believe in hope and the changes it can bring
If you believe then nothing can stand in our way
I believe

It’s a fact of life that we’re all in the game
But it’s still your call
But we all play it
Sometimes we win, sometimes we fall
But that’s no reason just to give it up, ‘cause after all
It you can’t choose what to be
You can choose what to dream
And I believe

I believe in love, it’s the best of everything
I believe in hope, and the changes it can bring
If you believe then nothing can stand in your way
Just say, I believe
Do you believe?

“Ellie sweetheart, are you ready. Your daddy’s gonna be here in a minute.” Liz called to her little girl.
“Nearly, I can’t get my shoe on.” The little voice called from her room.
“Ok, I’m coming.” She replied heading upstairs to her daughter’s room.
“Now then, let’s have a look at you.” She said helping Ellie down from her bed once her shoe was tied. She looked the perfect little angel, dressed in a pretty yellow sun dress with matching pump style shoes, her dark brown hair pulled half up in a yellow hair ribbon.
“Can I take my teddy with me?” She asked as the doorbell went.
“Sure.” Liz replied heading downstairs to answer the door.
“Hi Liz.” The familiar voice said as he stood on her doorstep.
“Max. How are you?”
“I’m ok, and you?”
“I’m fine.” She replied. “Come on Ellie, don’t keep your daddy waiting.” She called as her daughter bounced downstairs.
“Hello little angel, how are you sweetheart?” Max asked scooping his daughter up into his arms.
“I’m ok, mummy says I can take teddy with me.” She said hugging her stuffed bear.
“Of course you can.” Max replied. “We’ll be back by 6.00pm.” He said to Liz before disappearing down the path to his car.

As she shut the front door, Liz couldn’t help but think back to how she had got into the situation she was now in. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that at the age of 22 she would have a daughter who was soon to be five years old, but the day her daughter was conceived, that was the last thing on her mind. It had happened the day she helped rescue Max from Agent Pierce’s clutches. They had found an old disused van to rest for the night, Max had looked so scared, so genuinely worried, Liz couldn’t help but comfort him. She had only thought about kissing and holding him tight, but things just got out of hand. It was the first time for both of them, everything seemed perfect, their emotions too strong to ignore any longer. The following day, she had been in the cave with Max, Tess, Isabelle and Michael when they had heard about their destiny. Right there and then she knew she couldn’t be a part of his life, however much she loved him. They had spent the most perfect night together, but then in the cold light of day, his destiny shone through. Liz, doing the only thing she had the strength to do, said goodbye to her true love that day, and ran. She had ran until her legs would carry her no further, then collapsed in a heap and cried till her tears ran dry.

For the next month, Liz had avoided Max at all costs, she hadn’t even wanted to be in the same room as him, let alone speak to him. It hurt her so much, but she knew it was the only way she would get through it, to cut herself off from the one person that made life worth living. She had admitted defeat, she had allowed Tess to step in, to help to fulfil Max’s destiny. That month was a struggle for Liz, the hardest she could remember. But just as she was beginning to get her life back together, her world fell apart once again. She was pregnant, and it was Max’s. At first she had thought about getting rid of the baby, but in her heart she knew she couldn’t kill Max’s child. Then she thought about not telling him, pretending it was someone else’s, or even running away, but in the end Maria had persuaded her to tell him. As she had feared, Max was the perfect gentleman, he wanted to marry her, get a house and raise their child together. To Max though, his offer had nothing to do with duty, he truly wanted to spend the rest of his life with Liz and their unborn child. It had been tempting, it took all her willpower not to accept his offer and fall into his arms once again. Instead she had remained strong, reminding him of his destiny, the life he needed to make with Tess. They had many an argument about them, Max arguing that his destiny had changed the moment she walked into his life and now they had another life to consider, but Liz would have none of it. In her heart she knew she was doing the only thing she possibly could, protecting her child, and her own heart.

When she had finally told them, her parents had been furious at her. Nancy had yelled that she was throwing her life away, all her plans for Uni gone down the drain. Her father had countered how could she have been so irresponsible, their perfect daughter be so stupid. Those first few months of her pregnancy had been hard, she felt like everyone except for Maria and Alex were against her. In the end, to save her relationship with her parents, Liz moved in with Maria and her mother. Although Amy didn’t approve of Liz’s condition, she was fully aware how difficult it was being a young single mother and took pity on the girl.

And so, on a beautiful spring morning, Liz gave birth to her daughter, Ellie-Marie Evans. She was perfect in every way and Liz instantly fell in love with her. Having her daughter in some way helped to fill the void that loosing Max had left. He had tried numerous attempts to win her back, using every means possible, but Liz had rebuffed every advance and in the end had forced him into the arms of Tess. Her dreams of Harvard flew out the window the day she found she was pregnant, but Liz was determined not to ruin her life. So instead she threw herself into raising her daughter, working at the Crashdown and studying from home for her Molecular Biology degree. It took her a while, but by the time Ellie turned three, Liz had saved up enough money to move out of Amy’s house, and into a small place of their own. It wasn’t perfect, just a small two bedroomed place, but it had a nice little garden for Ellie, and was good enough for Liz. Her relationship with her parents was still strained, and at times Liz felt like she had no one in the world. Then Ellie would come bounding in with a beaming smile, hug her mother and suddenly life felt worth living again to Liz.

Each day Ellie-Marie grew, Liz saw more and more of her father in her. She had inherited her mother’s calm temperament and long dark hair, but everything else was from her father. Her eyes were just like Max’s, deep brown pools that could almost swallow you up as you stared into them. Her perfect smile that lit up her face, her cute little ears that stuck out slightly, another trademark of her father, and something Liz had hoped she wouldn’t inherit, his powers. It had started when she was four, Liz had caught her arm on a nail, and the inquisitive little girl wanted to see. As Liz bent down to show her daughter the scratch, Ellie had stretched out her hand, and placed it on the cut. A few seconds later, Ellie removed her hand to find nothing to indicate there had ever been a cut. It had scared Liz, she had wanted Ellie to be normal, to never be in danger, never have to run from the FBI or any special unit, but she had also known in her heart that Ellie would never be completely save. Her connection with Max meant that anyone wanting to hurt him would only have to come after their daughter to get to him.

Although it was painful for Liz to see Max, she never once considered stopping him from seeing their daughter. Ellie was part of him, and in time she would need her father to explain how and why she was different from other children. Liz was still close friends with Maria and Michael, Alex and Isabelle, who were all together, and sometimes went out with them. But going with the other four invariably meant going with Max, and more importantly Tess. She could just about handle seeing Max, but seeing him with Tess was always too much for Liz to cope with. Even five years on, it still hurt her to see him show affection to Tess, a simple kiss or holding hands would trigger memories in Liz that she had buried deep in her soul. Her daughter was a constant reminder of happy times, but Liz had long since admitted that her time with Max was over.

Sitting down at her kitchen table, Liz took out her pen and started writing the invitations. It was Ellie’s fifth birthday in two weeks time, and Liz was having a party in the garden for her. It was to be Ellie’s first big birthday party and Liz was determined to make it perfect. She had twenty of Ellie’s friends to invite, along with a couple of Liz’s friends. She was also inviting her parents and Max’s parents. Diane and Philip had been very supportive of Liz, and Diane especially had taken a huge interest in her first grandchild. Although they didn’t understand what had happened to their son’s relationship with Liz, they weren’t about to abandon her and their granddaughter like her parents had.

It was these times, when Ellie was with Max, that Liz did most of her reflecting. She found it hard to think of them having fun, doing the things they should have done as a family, and most of all, Tess being anywhere near her daughter. At first she had tried to stop Max from taking Ellie anywhere near Tess, but she accepted in time that she had no control over Max, or where he took their daughter. Liz did her best not to plant seeds of contempt in Ellie’s mind towards her father’s girlfriend, but over time, Ellie seemed to adopt hatred towards Tess of her own accord.

Busying herself in the garden, Liz pottered around, planting some new flowers, and generally tidying up in anticipation for Ellie’s party. Before she knew it, the clock inside struck 6.00pm, and the doorbell went.
“Hello sweetie, did you have a nice time?” Liz asked stroking her daughter’s hair.
“No, Tess wouldn’t let me take teddy out of the car.” Ellie complained, hugging Liz’s leg.
“Now Ellie, it wasn’t like that, Tess didn’t want to have to carry teddy when you were fed up.” Max said crouching down to his daughter’s level.
“But I wanted teddy to feed the ducks too. I hate Tess!” She protested.
“Ellie, that isn’t a nice thing to say.” Max said sternly.
“Why not? Mummy says I shouldn’t lie.” Ellie replied.
“Tess is a very nice person, you shouldn’t say nasty things about her, she’s trying to be your friend.” Max said.
“She says nasty things to me!” Ellie yelled.
“What do you mean sweetheart?” Liz asked crouching down also.
“When daddy went to get my ice cream, she said I was a spoilt brat and I didn’t deserve ice cream.” Ellie replied.
“That wasn’t very nice was it.” Liz agreed.
“Hey hang on, I’m sure Tess didn’t mean it like that.” Max said defending his girlfriend.
“She also said that she was better than mummy ‘cause she’s got you and mummy hasn’t.” Ellie added.
“Really? Max, have you anything to add?” Liz asked looking at him square in the eyes.
“Look I’m sure she didn’t say it like that.”
“Yes she did!” Ellie yelled.
“Ok Ellie, why don’t you get daddy’s invitation to your party, it’s on the kitchen table.” Liz said ushering her daughter towards the door.
“I don’t know what your girlfriend has been saying to my daughter, but I don’t like it Max. Ellie is at a very impressionable age, and Tess filling her head with things like that is not on.” Liz said sharply.
“Ok I know, you’re right. I’ll speak to Tess when I get home. If she did say that to Ellie then I’m sorry, she had no right Liz.” Max conceded.
“Ok, just don’t let it happen again.” Liz replied as her daughter returned to her side.
“This is for you daddy.” Ellie said handing her father the envelope.
“Thank you sweetheart. What’s this?” He asked looking at the envelope and seeing Tess’s name had been scribbled out.
“I don’t want Tess to come.” Ellie said adamantly.
“Now Ellie, that isn’t fair, of course Tess can come ……” Max started.
“No! It’s my party and I can choose who comes, mummy said so. So I don’t want her to come.” Ellie said starting to get upset.
“It’s ok sweetheart, you’re right it’s your party and you can choose who comes. If you don’t want Tess there then she won’t come, right Max?” Liz said.
“Liz ….” Max protested.
“Right Max!” Liz insisted.
“Ok, ok I’ll tell her, but she won’t like it.” Max said admitting defeat.
“This is our daughter’s party Max, it has nothing to do with Tess remember.”
“I know.” Max replied. “Can I have a kiss before I go Ellie?” He asked.
“Ok.” She replied relinquishing her grip on Liz’s leg and throwing her arms around her father’s neck.

That night, as she bathed her daughter, Liz asked her what else Tess had said.
“She said that daddy loves her more than you ‘cause he didn’t stay with you, but I don’t believe her.”
“No, why do you say that?” Liz asked soaping Ellie’s back.
“’Cause he’s happy every time he brings me home ‘cause he sees you, and he always asks lots of questions about you.”
“Really, questions like what?” Liz asked intrigued.
“Like if you’ve got a boyfriend.” Her daughter giggled.
“I hope you answer no!” Liz said sternly, but unable to contain her smile.
“Yes, ‘cause you still love him.” Ellie replied.
“Oh Ellie sweetie, you know that isn’t true. I know you wish your daddy and I were together, but it just wasn’t meant to be.” Liz said trying to convince her.
“Yes it is mummy, I know ‘cause I see you at night when you look at his picture, and I can feel it inside you, and inside daddy.” She replied innocently.
“I wish that were true.” Liz replied quietly, holding out the huge towel and engulfing her daughter into it.
“Now, how about chocolate milk and a bedtime story?” Liz said trying to entice her daughter to bed.
“Yay, can I choose the book?”
”Sure, you get the book, and I’ll get the milk.” Liz replied pulling Ellie’s white cotton pyjama top over her head.

As she mixed Ellie’s chocolate milk, her daughter’s words rang in her ears. Ellie had said she could feel that she still had feelings for Max, and more importantly, that Max still had feelings for her. Could it be possible? Did Ellie have a special gift where she could sense what people were feeling inside? She knew that Max could connect and see into people’s minds, but feelings were something else.
“Ok Sweetie, so what story is it tonight?” Liz asked handing Ellie the drink in her favourite cup.
“Cinderella!” Ellie yelled bouncing on the bed.
“Ok, lay down and I’ll start.” Liz replied trying to calm her down. “Once upon a time there was a beautiful little girl, her name was Cinderella.” Liz started as Ellie listened intently. By the time she was half way through the book, Ellie had given up the fight to resist tiredness, and had fallen into a deep sleep.
“Goodnight sweetheart, sweet dreams.” Liz whispered, kissing her daughter’s forehead, switching out the light and pulling the door to.

As she sat on the window seat in her room, Liz couldn’t help but stare up into the dark night sky. In her mind, she was still mulling over Ellie’s words and she found herself wondering what it would have been like if she’d of ignored his destiny. Would they have been happy, would Ellie have turned out a different child? No matter how she reasoned, Liz couldn’t help but envy Tess Harding. Without even fighting, Liz had handed Max on a plate to her, Liz’s constant rebuffs making him loose patience and fall into Tess’s eagerly waiting arms. In her heart, Liz knew she would never find another man. After five years she still loved him deeply, and no man would ever be able to compete against that. As she slipped her silky short nightdress on, she felt a pang of sadness, knowing she would never feel his hands on her bare flesh, his scorching kisses, his muscular hands running through her silky soft brown hair. As she climbed into bed, the inevitable tears trickled down her face. She felt so lonely, her bed so very empty, she ached so much inside for him. Her daughter was right, she still had very strong feelings for Max, she loved him and knew she would for the rest of her life. Slowly crying herself to sleep, the pain in her heart that she carried each day eased, if only for the few fitful hours she slept.

Part 2

If you Love Me – By Ronan Keating

Wish I could tell by the look in your eyes (where I stand)
Wish I could tell what you’re feeling inside (but I can’t)
Wish You would say what I’m needing to hear (you want me)
Give me a sign that would make it all clear (just show me)
Don’t leave my heart out here on the line

If you love me, let me know
So al of me can just let go
You can have me heart and soul
If you love me ….. then just let me know

You let me think that I don’t have a chance (none at all)
You turn away when I capture your glance (should I fall)
And the you say you’ve been dreaming of me (am I right)
And I don’t know what I should believe.

If you love me, let me know
So al of me can just let go
You can have me heart and soul
If you love me ….. then just let me know

I wanna give you what you need
I wanna be there in your dreams
You gotta show me that you want it as much as I do

Wish I could tell by the look in your eyes
Don’t leave my heart out here on the line

If you love me, let me know
So al of me can just let go
You can have me heart and soul
If you love me ….. then just let me know

“What do you mean I can’t come!” Tess wined.
“Exactly that. Look it’s Ellie’s day and I don’t want it ruined. Please don’t be difficult Tess.” Max said rubbing the bridge of his nose with the thumb and finger.
“She’s five years old for gods sake, since when has she been deciding the rules? This is Liz’s doing, that kid is a spoilt brat!” She spat
“Don’t talk about my daughter like that! She is a wonderfully special little girl. It’s you saying things like that to her that makes her hate you!” Max said getting angry.
“Why not, it’s true. Liz has turned her against me , filling her head with all sorts of untrue stories.” Tess winged.
“Liz wouldn’t do that and you know it. Look it’s just a children’s birthday party, why do you have to get so worked up about it?”
“’Cause I wanna go!” She complained, sounding like Ellie. “Maria, Michael, Isabelle and Alex are gonna be there. Besides if you give into Ellie on this she’ll know she can walk all over you!”
“Don’t be so melodramatic Tess! In the end it is Liz’s house and Ellie’s party, it is their choice who they want to invite.” Max said trying to calm her down.
“Why don’t you go running back to her then, it’s obvious you want to!” Tess wailed, forcing crocodile tears down her face.
“Stop it Tess! I really don’t need this right now.” Max replied, feeling very tired.

To Max it felt like all he and Tess every seemed to do lately was fight. Her constant mood swings, volatile temper and ability to act like a five year old was beginning to wear him down. He still questioned why he had decided to go with Tess. He had tried desperately to win Liz back, both before and after she had told him about the baby. At first he kicked himself for the mess they were in, desperately wanting to help her through it. But she had refused every piece of help he had offered. No matter what he did, he just couldn’t win her back. In the end he guessed he had just given into his human side, he was young after all. Liz had made it clear she didn’t want him, and he knew he couldn’t handle telling someone else his secret. So, with Tess throwing herself at him at every opportunity, he had finally given in. At first things were good, not like what he had with Liz, but good enough to make Max happy, but the novelty soon wore off. Seeing Liz each time he collected and dropped off Ellie was hard. He saw how much she dotted over their daughter, she was a wonderful mother. She had made many sacrifices to bring their daughter into the world. Her career plans, the relationship with her parents, her dreams for her future, but she had never once let it get her down, never blaming any of it on their daughter. Sometimes he wished she didn’t cope so well, maybe then she would accept his help. Most of the time though, he just remembered the good times, her smile, sparkly eyes, soft velvet skin, she was so perfect. They had only spent the one night together, with Ellie being the outcome, yet Max often played that night over in his head. Even as the years had passed, he could still remember every detail, every part of her body, the amazing feeling it was to have her lying in his arms. Yet he would never feel that way again, never truly love someone so unconditionally as he did Liz. He knew he was being unfair to Tess, she cared so much for him, but he only reciprocated half of that feeling.

Getting into bed, Max laid as far away from Tess as he possibly could without sleeping on the floor. She was mad at him for not letting her go to Ellie’s party, he was mad at her for acting like a child over the whole thing.
“Oh Max, please don’t let us fight, let’s make up.” Tess said seductively, running her hands over his bare chest.
“No Tess, I’m tired.” He replied, but she still continued, kissing his shoulder, as she moved her hand further down past his stomach.
“I said no Tess!” Max yelled, catching her hand before it reached its destination.
“Oh come on Max, you know you want to.” She said trying to win him round.
“Look Tess, what part of no don’t you understand!” He yelled, pushing her away from him.
“Fine, I get the message!” She shouted rolling away and turning her back on him. Max knew things were getting bad between them, even the thought of her touching him was repulsive. He knew he had to do something, he’d rather be alone than have Tess’s hands over him again.

“So how’s my special little birthday girl?” Maria said as she walked into Liz’s house.
“Have you got me a present?” Ellie piped up.
“Ellie! You know better than to ask for gifts, say sorry to Auntie Maria.” Liz said sternly.
“Sorry, Auntie Maria.” Ellie replied, throwing her arms around Maria.
“That’s ok sweetie, and yes I have got you a present, but you’ll have to wait until your party!” Maria teased.
“Let me show you what mummy bought me.” The little girl squealed.
“Sure, you go get it, and I’ll wait here.” Maria said watching her goddaughter tear off upstairs.
“You ok Liz?” Maria asked.
“Yeah I’m fine, want some pancakes?” She offered.
“Sure, sounds great. You sure you’re ok, you sound a bit down?”
“Just having a bad week I think.”
“Something to do with the party today?” Maria probed.
“Something like that. Spending four hours at one time with Max is gonna be tough.” Liz said turning the pancake over.
“We’ll all be here for you Liz, you know that don’t you.” Maria said standing up and putting her hand on her friend’s shoulder.
“Thanks ‘ria, I really need that.” Liz replied smiling.

As she watched Liz, Maria couldn’t help but feel sorry for her best friend. Out of all of them, Maria knew Liz’s feelings for Max ran very deep. She had won Michael over, as had Isabelle with Alex, why did Liz have to be so stubborn with Max? She’d heard through Isabelle that Max wasn’t happy with Tess. It wasn’t that Max had said anything to his sister, but Isabelle was able to sense changes in Max, and his body language when she saw him with Tess seemed to affirm their suspicions.
“You know Lizzie, I really don’t think Max is happy with Tess.” Maria said pouring herself a glass of juice from the table.
“Really Maria, that’s nice.” Liz replied absentmindedly.
“Liz! What do you mean ‘that’s nice’. God girl it’s more than nice, it means you can finally go back to him.” Maria replied.
“No Maria, it doesn’t. Too much has happened, to many years have passed, we’ve both moved on, we’re different people now.”
“You’re not as different as you think Liz, you have a very common bond, your daughter remember.”
“Yes Maria, I remember. I have the reminder 24 hours a day, but I made the decision, I chose to end it with Max despite his attempts. Just because he is going through a rough patch with Tess doesn’t mean I can just jump in.”
“That’s exactly what it means Liz, stop being so stubborn and put your feelings first for a change!” Maria insisted as Ellie came back into the room.
“Drop it Maria, this isn’t the time or the place to discuss it.” Liz replied throwing a cold stare at her friend. The last thing Liz needed was for Ellie to hear their conversation then repeat it to Max.
“Look Auntie Maria.” Ellie said holding up four stuffed toys.
“Oh wow Ellie aren’t they cute.”
“They’re Beanie Babies, this is Halo the Angel Bear, this is Pounce the Cat, this is Dotty the Dog, and this is Fleece the Lamb. “Ellie said holding each one up to Maria.
“I’ve got, erm how many have I got now mummy?”
“You’ve got nearly thirty.” Liz replied, putting the plate of pancakes down on the table.
“Wow, that’s a lot of Beanies.” Maria replied.
“Put them away now Ellie, or you’ll get them all messed up.” Liz said sitting down next to her friend.
“I still think you should talk to Max, tell him you still have feelings for him.” Maria added while Ellie was out of earshot.”
“Maria!” Liz replied sharply, making sure her friend knew to drop the subject.

“Now you’ve got to add in the chocolate dots.” Maria said, as Ellie giggled beside her. They were busy making cookies for her party that afternoon. There was flour and sugar all over the place, and Maria wasn’t sure about Ellie’s counting of ‘one chocolate dot for the cookies, one for me’.
“How’s it going guys?” Liz asked, returning from the shops with more supplies.
“Great, the jellies are in the fridge, cakes on the side, and we’re making the cookies right now.” Maria replied mixing the contents of her bowl.
“Mmm, I can see that my kitchen looks like a bombs hit it also!” Liz replied taking the ice cream out of the bag and putting it in the freezer.
“So, how long do we have?” Maria asked.
“A little over two hours. Look Maria, thank you so much for your help, I couldn’t do this without you.” Liz said, hugging her friend.
“No prob Liz, you know I’m always willing to help you.” Maria replied spooning the cookie mixture onto the baking tray.
“Can I lick the bowl out?” Ellie asked.
“Sure.” Maria replied
“Just make sure you don’t eat too much, or you’ll make yourself sick before your party.” Liz reminded her.

The party was to start at 3.00pm, and just after 2.00pm the doorbell rang.
“I want to get it!” Ellie yelled, jumping down from the chair she was standing on, and running into the hall.
“Daddy!” She screeched after opening the door, before throwing herself into his waiting arms.
“Happy birthday sweetheart.” He said, sweeping her up into his arms and walking into the house.
“Hi Max.” Liz said emerging from the kitchen as she wiped her hands on a towel.
“Hi Liz, how are you?” He asked, setting the little girl down.
“Good, I’m good, and you?”
“Yeah, I’m ok I guess.”
“Is that my present?” She asked excitedly.
“That’s right angel.” He replied smiling.
“Can I open it now?”
“No sweetie, it’s time for you to get ready for your party.” Liz said.
“Oh mummy, please?” She pleaded.
“No Ellie.”
“I want to open the present.” She protested.
“Ellie-Marie, if you don’t get up those stairs now, there will be no party!” Liz said raising her voice slightly.
“It’s not fair.” Ellie complained, stomping upstairs.
“Make yourself at home Max, I won’t be long.” Liz said, following her daughter upstairs.

After helping Ellie get changed into her pink party dress with matching shoes, Liz did her hair. Pulling her long brown hair into a pony tail, Liz curled it, causing ringlets to fall to Ellie’s shoulders. After securing the small diamond tiara in place, her little girl looked like a true princess.
“Do I look pretty daddy?” Ellie asked bouncing into the lounge
“You look stunning baby, my special little princess.” He replied, pulling the little girl onto his lap.
“Can I open my present now?” She asked sweetly
“Ok Ellie, you can open it now.” Liz replied knowing her daughter had waited long enough.
“Goody!” Ellie squealed, jumping off Max’s lap and running over to the big box on the floor.
“You look pretty Liz.” Max commented as Liz sat down opposite him. She was dressed in a light yellow summer dress, her hair freshly dried down making it look even more silky and soft, with a small amount of make up to finish her outfit.
“Thanks. You look good too.” She replied smiling. Good was an understatement, he looked hot. Black chinos, a white tight fitting top and his trademark leather jacket laid on the sofa beside him. In five years, Max Evans hadn’t changed one bit, he was still perfect in every way she thought. The top clung to his rippling muscles causing Liz to imagine what it would be like to run her hands over his bare skin, to kiss his shoulders, and run her finger nails down his back.
“Damm, where did that come from?” She thought to herself. Liz was snapped out of her daydream by the sound of her young daughter ripping the paper away from the large box.
“Oh daddy, it’s just what I wanted!” Ellie cried, struggling to get the doll out of the box.
“Here sweetie, let me help you.” Liz offered, getting up and kneeling next to her daughter. It was a large baby sized doll, the specific one Liz had told Max she had wanted.
“A little bird told me it’s what you wanted, I hope you like it.” Max replied taking in the beaming smile that was spread over his daughter’s face.
“I love it!” Ellie replied jumping up and hugging her father. “I want to show teddy my new doll.” She added before tearing upstairs.
“I think she likes it.” Max replied.
“It’s perfect. Thanks for buying it Max, I would have done but it was slightly outside my price range.” Liz said, busying herself by tidying up the mess Ellie had left with the wrapping paper.
“It’s no problem Liz. I really wish you’d let me help pay for things for Ellie, she’s my daughter as well you know.” Max replied. Apart from a small amount Liz took from Max each month, she refused to accept anything else from Max. Ellie was her daughter and she was determined to survive on her own, if only to prove she could to her parents.
“We’re doing fine Max. You just keep buying her the presents she wants and she’ll love you forever.” Liz replied putting the paper in the nearby bin.
“But it’s not just about presents Liz, I want to be a big part of her life too.” Max said, getting up and walking over to Liz.
“You are Max, she loves you so much. She may be only five, but in a couple of years she’s going to need to a lot more.” Liz replied
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that she’s going to want some answers about why she’s different. Answers that only her father can give. You know she’s inherited more than your eyes Max, and she’s beginning to get curious as to why she can sometimes heal things.”
“I hadn’t thought of that.”
“So you see. Ellie needs a lot more from you besides presents, she needs you to be there for her when she finally asks those questions.”
“And what about you Liz, do you need me?” He probed.
“Of course I do, Ellie is a handful, I need all the help I can get.” She said looking away from him.
“That’s not what I meant.” He said putting his hand to her cheek and moving her face to look at him. “I meant, do *you* need me Liz?” He said trying to emphasise the you part.
“What do you mean Max?” She asked, looking into his deep brown eyes.
“I mean what about you, I know Ellie dotes over me, but what about you. You’ve changed so much over the last five years, from the girl I fell in love with to the beautiful woman in front of me now. What about your needs Liz, why haven’t you moved on?” He asked.
“Because I can’t Max.” She whispered. “Because I’m still madly in love with you.” She wanted to say, but she bit her lip to stop the words from coming out.
“Why Liz, why can’t you. I want you to be happy, I want to see the sparkle return to your eyes, I want to see the carefree Liz I used to know.”
“That girl is long gone Max, raising a child at 17 on your own sorta does that to you.” She whipped back.
“That’s not fair Liz, you know how much I wanted to be there with you, to love you, to care for you, to help you. But every time I tried you pushed me away, what was I supposed to do?”
“Keep trying.” She said to herself. “Nothing Max, you were supposed to do nothing. You have your life with Tess now, I accept that. I know you will always be a part of Ellie’s life, but that’s as far as it goes with us.” She replied starting to walk away from him. For a second he was going to let her walk away, just like he always did, but this time something inside him shouted out. Grabbing her wrist before she moved away, he pulled her back close to his body, and leant in towards her ear.
“It doesn’t have to be.” He whispered.

She could feel his hot breath on her cheek as he whispered the words. In her mind, her head suddenly felt dizzy, she hadn’t been this close to Max Evans in a long time. His hand that was still clinging onto her wrist was scorching her skin, sending shiver after shiver darting down her spine. She couldn’t think straight, her brain felt fuzzy, all clear thoughts and reason were fast disappearing. As she closed her eyes for a second, she inhaled a deep breath of his familiar scent, her breathing laboured, forming words was no longer a feasible possibility. In the space of a few seconds he had managed to turn her to jelly, a power she thought over time she would be able to control. Although she tried to resist, the urge to face him and look into those soulful eyes, was too great. Staring into his deep brown pools, she tried to gauge his emotions, catch a glimpse of what he was feeling inside.

Part 3

If I don’t tell you now – By Ronan Keating

I’ve kept it inside for the longest time
And I can’t keep keeping in
All this love that is in my heart
Maybe it’s safer not to say that I care
Maybe this road won’t lead me anywhere
But

If I don’t tell you now
I may never get the chance again
To tell you that I need you
Tell you what I’m feeling
If I keep these feelings in
And if I don’t say the words
How will you hear what’s inside my heart
How will you know baby, if I don’t tell you now

I’d give anything to be in your dreams
And I can’t stand standing by
With this dream locked inside my heart
Maybe I’m only gonna make a mistake
And there’s a chance maybe my heart will break
But

If I don’t tell you now
I may never get the chance again
To tell you that I need you
Tell you what I’m feeling
If I keep these feelings in
And if I don’t say the words
How will you hear what’s inside my heart
How will you know baby, if I don’t tell you now

How will you know you’re inside by soul
Oh it’s driving me crazy
‘Coz you don’t see
You’re the world to me
I’m so afraid to say the way that I feel, and

If I don’t tell you now
I may never get the chance again
To tell you that I need you
Tell you what I’m feeling
If I keep these feelings in
And if I don’t say the words
How will you hear what’s inside my heart
How will you know baby, if I don’t tell you now

If I don’t tell you now
How will you hear what’s inside my heart
How will you know baby
If I don’t tell you now

Part 3

The distant sound of the doorbell ringing, brought Liz out of the trance she was in.
“I should get that.” She said, forcing the words out of her dry mouth, and slowly removing her wrist from his vice like grip. As she walked away, Max rubbed his face with his hands. He didn’t know what he was doing, what had just happened, or what had possessed him to whisper that to Liz. He was with Tess, it was what Liz wanted, it was his destiny, he had no right to mess Liz’s head up like that. But what was that he had read in her eyes, was that a flicker of emotion caused by his words? Did she still have feelings for him, did she still care about him? Shaking his head, Max tried to clear the moment from his mind, then walked out to the hall way where Michael, Maria, Isabelle and Alex were.
“Hi guys.” Max said greeting his friends
“Erm did we interrupt anything guys?” Maria asked, sensing the tension in the room
“No! I mean no, nothing.” Liz replied quickly. The others exchanged unconvinced glances
“You sure Liz? You look, erm how can I put it …… flushed.” Alex replied, before Isabelle elbowed him in the ribs “Oww! I was just saying what everyone else was thinking!” He added, trying to defend himself.
“Why don’t we all go outside.” Liz said, breaking the tension and ushering everyone out to the garden so that she could get some cool air on her face.

After getting Ellie down, and offering everyone drinks, Liz set about entertaining the guests. Within twenty minutes, all of Ellie’s friend’s had arrived and the house was full of children. While Alex busily entertained the children, Liz slipped into the kitchen to start setting out the birthday tea.
“You ok Liz?” Maria asked, following her friend into the house.
“Sure, why’d you ask?”
“’Cause you’ve been avoiding Max ever since we got here.”
“What do you expect Maria, I’ve hardly spent more than five minutes at a time with him since that night when I got pregnant with Ellie.” Liz replied not looking at her friend.
“Yeah, I know that Liz, but I also know you still care for Max. It’s obvious, I can see it in you, and today you’re different. You seem to run a mile every time he comes near you, hardly say a word to him, what’s going on?”
“Nothing.”
“Look me in the eye and say that Liz Parker, ‘cause you’re not fooling me.”
“Please Maria, just drop it.”
“Something has happened hasn’t it, is that why Tess isn’t here. Surely they haven’t split up already, I’m sure Michael would have told me.”
“No they haven’t split up, Ellie didn’t want Tess to come, so she wasn’t invited, there’s nothing more sinister. Max and I just talked a little earlier, that’s all.” She said, lowering her voice for the last sentence.
“Talked! What about?” Maria asked, pouncing on her friend’s last words.
“Just stuff, Ellie mainly, but he also asked me why I kept pushing him away whenever he tried to get close before.”
“And?”
“And I said it wasn’t meant to be. He has his life with Tess and that’s something I’ve had to live with, I am prepared to sacrifice my happiness for his destiny. I said he was a part of Ellie’s life, but that’s as far as it goes with us”
“And what did Max say?” Maria asked eager to know.
“That it didn’t have to be as far as it goes.” Liz whispered.
“What! Oh my god Lizzy this is just what you wanted.” Maria squealed.
“No it isn’t Maria, I want Max to be happy, not to do something out of some sort of duty. His destiny is with Tess, not me. Ok so Ellie did complicate things for a while, but I’m on my feet now, the last thing I need is him knocking me over again.” She replied.
“What are you saying Liz? Max has all but admitted he still cares for you, and I know for a fact you still care for him, so what’s your problem.”
“It’s not that simple Maria, I have my daughter to think about and Tess.”
“Forget Tess, she doesn’t deserve your sympathy. She has been screwing with Max’s brain from the moment she came to Roswell. And if you ask Ellie, I know what her reaction would be.”
“You are not to say anything to anyone about this, certainly not Ellie, the last thing I need is her getting her hopes up thinking Max and I are getting together, it isn’t going to happen Maria. He can’t just expect to walk in here, mess up my head, and expect me to fall at his feet and forget everything. I made a decision five years ago to say goodbye to Max Evans, and I intend to keep it.” Liz said adamantly as she took out the jellies from the fridge and placed them on the table.
“You are a stubborn girl Liz Parker, and you’ll wind up old and alone if you don’t give in. Either accept Max’s advances, or get over him and move on to someone else.” Maria added before leaving Liz to ponder her words.

The party finally finished around 6.00pm, with all the children going home exhausted but very happy. After helping Liz tidy up, Michael, Maria, Isabelle, Alex and Max decided it was time to go home.
“Oh daddy, can’t you stay and read me a bedtime story?” Ellie pleaded.
“Sure sweetheart.” Max replied, lifting her into his arms and carrying her up to her room.
“Take care Liz, I’ll speak to you on Monday.” Alex said hugging his friend.
“Thanks for inviting us.” Michael added.
“We’ll talk tomorrow Liz.” Maria insisted hugging her friend before following the others out to their cars.

“Oh dear, oh dear, I shall be too late, the white rabbit said as it rushed passed Alice. In another moment the rabbit disappeared down the rabbit hole. Alice, not having a moment to think, followed the rabbit and begin falling down what seemed to be a very deep well. Well thought Alice, after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling downstairs. How brave they’ll all think me at home.” Max read to his daughter

As she walked upstairs, Liz couldn’t help but peer into her daughter’s room. Ellie was listening intently as Max read her the story, and for a few moments, her feet wouldn’t let her move away from the room. They looked so sweet together, it was the first time she had seen Max read a story to Ellie, and he was doing a wonderful job of it. A pang of guilt knotted in her stomach when she remembered his words of earlier. She knew Ellie would be ecstatic if Max and her got together, but Liz just didn’t think her heart could take anymore pain. What if it didn’t work out, what if after a few months Max realised it was really Tess he loved and went back to her, how would Liz ever survive? No, she had to be strong, even if it meant denying her true feelings and never loving anyone again.

A little while later, Ellie had eventually crashed out, and Max headed back downstairs to the lounge.
“Wow she sure knows how to get value for money, I didn’t think she’d ever go to sleep.” Max said sitting down opposite Liz.
“She loves listening to stories, I think we might have a budding author on our hands soon.” Liz replied thinking about her daughter.
“Well I think the party went really well, a great success. You did wonderful job.” He replied watching her stretched out on the sofa.
“Thanks, I had help from Maria though so I can’t take all the credit. Ellie’s only five once, I wanted it to be special for her.” Liz replied shutting her eyes for a few moments. The room then went silent, Liz lost in her own little world, and Max just watching her rest. She looked so beautiful as she laid out, her arms resting above her head, her velvety hair covering them. The tightness of the dress showing off the curves of her body she normally hid under loose fitting tops and baggy trousers. Unable to hold himself back any longer, Max quietly walked over to her and knelt down on the floor beside the sofa
“I meant what I said earlier.” He whispered. As the words sunk into her brain, Liz’s eyes sprung open, partly through shock that he was so close all of a sudden, and party because she wasn’t expecting him to say that.
“You’re not being fair Max, to me or Tess. What about her in all this, she really loves you.”
“And I think so do you Liz. How about you’re not being fair to yourself. I know you heard my destiny that day and sometimes I wish you hadn’t, sometimes I wish you had stayed with Maria and Alex. They have been able to get over Michael and Isabelle’s destiny, they’re all really happy together, why can’t you? Don’t you see Liz, no matter what I do, it all comes down to the same thing, I am still totally in love with you.” He said honestly. Blinking away the tears that were threatening to spill out, Liz didn’t know what to say. Inside a voice was screaming at her to follow her heart, but there was another voice equally loud shouting that she couldn’t go back now that she had come so far. In the end she laid there on the sofa, unable to speak, closing her eyes in an attempt to stop the tears. As one silent tear escaped the confinements of her eyes, Max gently lifted his finger and wiped it away. He didn’t know what more he could do to bring her back to him, or how often he could cope with being rejected. In his heart he knew he didn’t love Tess, he never had, Liz was too big a part of his life for him to forget her.

Bending his head down, he gently kissed her soft lips, a brief kiss but one of pure love and passion on his part.
“I love you Liz.” He whispered, getting up off the floor and leaving the house. As the cool breeze hit his face, he realised his cheeks were wet with tears. His own emotions were in turmoil, rejection again from Liz got no easier to bear. Climbing into the jeep, Max rested his head against the steering wheel and allowed the tears to fall down his face. Going back to Tess was the last thing he wanted to do, but what choice did he have. After sitting there for a few minutes, Max regained his composure, wiped away his tears and started the jeep engine.

As she heard the jeep pull out of the driveway, Liz crawled upstairs and finally allowed the tears roll down her face. She felt miserable, like her heart had been ripped out once again. She didn’t know why she couldn’t let Max back into her life. She had done so well to cope over the years, to bury her feelings for Max deep inside her soul. Yet one simple sentence had brought them rushing up to the surface once again, engulfing her, suffocating her. Crawling into bed, Liz hugged the bed covers close to her in an attempt to feel secure. She had given up so much for Ellie, her life, her love, her parents, giving into temptation and allowing herself to love Max once again scared her. Could her life come crashing down around her once again. If only it was a simple as loving him, but it wasn’t, too much had happened, too many things to complicate matters, she didn’t think she had the courage to fall into his arms once again. Lost in her own world, Liz didn’t hear her little girl come into her room and climb onto the bed. She had sensed her mother was upset, and putting her tiny arms around her, Ellie snuggled up to Liz, providing the comfort Liz was searching for.
“I love you mummy.” The little girl whispered as they drifted off into a deep sleep.

“Where have you been Max, it’s nearly 9.30pm, the party must have finished hours ago!” Tess yelled as he walked through the door.
“Ellie wanted me to put her to bed and read her a story, I couldn’t just say no. Then I chatted to Liz for a while before coming back, what’s the problem here?” He asked angrily.
“The problem? You know the problem, I wanted to go with you, we are a couple remember.”
“Yeah I remember Tess, but the party is over now so can we just drop it? I am really tired and I just want to go to sleep.” He said honestly. Fighting was the last thing he had energy for.
“This isn’t fair Max, she has you wrapped around her little finger.” Tess winged.
“Leave Ellie out of this!” Max yelled, defending his daughter.
“I wasn’t talking about Ellie, I was talking about Liz. She still controls you Max, you still fall at her feet, go running whenever she calls you, it isn’t fair.”
“Tess she is the mother of my child, of course I’m still going to have contact with Liz. No matter what you say I won’t let you stop me seeing my daughter just because Liz will be there.” Max said adamantly.
“Fine, then how about making a commitment to me.” Tess asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I want a child of our own Max.” Tess replied completely out of the blue.
“Jeez where did that come from? You’re joking right,?” Max said totally stunned by what she had just said. Never before had the subject of children come up between them.
“No, why should I be. What is so wrong wanting to have our child and not Liz’s?”
“I didn’t plan to have a child with Liz, but I wouldn’t turn back the clock now. Ellie is wonderful, but I’m not ready for more kids. I’m only 22 years old Tess, I don’t want to be tied down yet.”
“Please Max, I really want to do this.” Tess said, batting her eyelids to try to persuade him.
“No!” Max insisted, getting up and going upstairs, leaving Tess fuming. Inside, the thought of having a child with Tess repulsed him. He didn’t know why, but he knew no matter what he couldn’t let anything happen to get himself cornered into getting Tess pregnant. He would have no chance getting back with Liz if there was another child to consider.

Part 4

Believe – By Ronan Keating

You said you could see no end
The world and himself were all on your back
I vowed to take your hand
Show the world in a different light

All that you’ve done
You’ve got to believe
In all of your dreams

No matter what the world can throw at you
You know you can believe
Believe in my
And after all
I’ll still believe in you

And even if you cannot see
The brighter light ahead I’ll see
You must believe, believe in me
And after all I’ll still believe in you

I’ll pull away the clouds
That cover you up that leave you down
I won’t leave you all alone
I’ll be there for you in your darkest hour

And all that you’ve done
You’ve got to believe
In all of your dreams

No matter what the world can throw at you
You know you can believe, believe in me
And after all I’ll still believe in you

And even if you cannot see
The brighter light ahead I’ll see
You must believe, believe in me
And after all I’ll still believe in you

And when it’s dark outside
I’ll protect you from the night
My shoulder you can rely on
I won’t do you wrong

All that you’ve done
You’ve got to believe
In all of your dreams, all of your dreams

No matter what the world can throw at you
You know you can believe, believe in me
And after all I’ll still believe in you

And even if you cannot see
The brighter light ahead I’ll see
You must believe, believe in me
And after all I’ll still believe in you

From the moment she opened her eyes, the first thing that popped into her mind was Max and his words. She had hoped that in the cold light of day her mind and body would be shocked back to its senses, but no. Each time she closed her eyes or took a deep breath his words jumped into her head and flooded her ears. “I love you Liz”, over and over.

“Ellie sweetie, time to get up, otherwise you’ll be late for school.” Liz said trying to detangle her body from the little girl’s arms
“Mmm, hi mummy.” Ellie said rubbing her eyes open. “But I can’t go to school if you’re sad.” She added.
“I’m not sad sweetie, I’m fine. Now, up!” Liz replied kissing the top of her head before getting out of bed

After eventually packing Ellie off to school, Liz headed off to do her shift at the Crashdown. It was one of the few times she actually saw her parents. Her choices in life had not been the ones Jeff and Nancy had expected from their daughter, and they still punished her for them. For Liz, she only worked at the Crashdown because she needed the money, it was easy, and she could fit it around Ellie and her studying. She had nearly completed her micro biology degree, and was hoping to get a proper job by the end of the year. Placing her bag in to her locker, Liz took out the silver antenna hair band from inside and put in on her head. She sighed as she looked at herself in the mirror. She was 22 years old and still worked at the same diner, it certainly wasn’t how she had expected her life to pan out.
“Liz, there are customers waiting to be served out here.” Her father called, as she shut her locker door. Grabbing her order pad, Liz took one more deep breath and headed out into the restaurant.
“Hi, I’m Liz, I’ll be your waitress today, can I get you something to drink while you look at the menu?” She said sweetly to the first table.

For Liz, the day didn’t get much better. She almost split cherry coke all over a customer, took three orders down wrong, and managed to break the milkshake machine again. As she sat down at the counter during her break, Liz rubbed her eyes to try to wake herself up. Last night had not been a good nights’ sleep, despite Ellie’s attempts to comfort her, Max’s kiss just kept swimming around in her head. His soft lips gently pressing against hers, his hot breath tickling her skin, the tingling sensation in her body that she thought she would never feel again.
“God it was just a kiss for goodness sake!” She lectured herself, as she absentmindedly touched her lips with her finger.

“Liz are you going to get that? Liz? Liz!” Her father yelled snapping her out of her trance.
“Oh ….. what?” She asked trying to look alert.
“The phone, answer it!” Her father replied sharply.
“Oh yeah, sorry.” Liz replied picking up the phone that was beside her.
“Hello Crashdown Diner, how may I help you?” She asked politely.
“May I speak to Miss Parker please.” The voice asked.
“This is she.” Liz replied.
“Hello Miss Parker, this is Mrs Janton the secretary from Roswell Elementary. I’m sorry by Ellie has had an accident at school.”
“Oh my god, is she ok?” Liz asked getting worried.
“She fell off a climbing frame, she’s been taken to the hospital.” Mrs Janton replied.
“Oh right, I’ll get there straight away. Thank you.” Liz replied slamming the phone down and undoing her apron.
“Liz, where are you going?” Her father called as she disappeared into the back. Ripping off her uniform, Liz quickly changed back into her jeans and white knitted top, not caring who saw her.
“Liz, I said where are you going. Why have you changed, your shift doesn’t finish for another hour.” Her father said.
“That was Ellie’s school, she had an accident, fell off a climbing frame. She’s been rushed to hospital.” Liz replied blinking back tears as she delved into her bag for her car keys.
“But what am I supposed to do, the lunch hour rush is about to start, and I’ve only got one waitress.” Her father protested.
“Look, I don’t care. My daughter is lying in a hospital bed, I don’t know what sort of injuries she’s got. I am her mother and I am going to see her, fire me if you want, I don’t care.” Liz replied, before running out through the restaurant towards her car.

Her trip to the hospital took about twenty minutes, but to Liz it was a complete blur. She desperately tried to stem the flow of tears that had started the moment she ran out of the restaurant. Her father’s words had hit her hard. He didn’t seem to care at all that Ellie could be seriously hurt, all he cared about was that he’d actually have to do some work and maybe wait on a few tables. Pulling into the hospital grounds, Liz all but abandoned her car and rushed through the ER department entrance.
“Hello my name is Liz Parker, my little girl Ellie was brought here a while ago.” Liz blurted out to the receptionist.
“Ok, if you’d like to have a seat, I’ll get someone to come and see you very soon.” She replied pointing in the direction of the chairs. Sitting was the last thing Liz wanted to do, she felt agitated, scared about her daughter, but she didn’t have much choice. As she sat down, Liz suddenly felt very alone, and realised she needed to let someone else know about Ellie, Max. He wouldn’t care how injured she was, Max would want to see her.

“Hello Evans and Evans Law Firm, how may I direct your call?” The receptionist asked.
“Max Evans please.” Liz replied.
“One moment please, I’ll put you through to his office.” She said, before hold music flooded Liz’s ear.
“Hello Max Evans office, Jennifer Ellison speaking.” Max’s secretary said
“Hi, this is Liz Parker, may I speak to Max please.”
“I’m afraid Mr Evans is in an important meeting at the moment, may I take a message?”
“This is very important, I must speak to him right away.” Liz insisted.
“I’m sorry, but the meeting is not interruptible. Like I said, I can take a message and get him to call you as soon as he gets out.”
“Look I don’t think I’m making myself clear. His little girl is lying in a hospital bed, and I need to speak to Max immediately.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’ll get him right away.” She said quickly, before hurrying in to interrupt the meeting. A few seconds later, Max was at his secretary’s desk, with the phone in his hand.
“Liz it’s Max, what’s happened?”
“Ellie’s had an accident at school. They’ve brought her into the hospital but I haven’t been able to see her yet, I’m scared Max, I don’t know what to do.” She admitted.
“Ok, I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Max replied, before putting the phone down.
“Cancel the rest of my meetings for today Jen, I’m going to the hospital.” Max added before grabbing his jacket and rushing out of his office, leaving his bemused clients speechless.

Inside five minutes, Max was at the hospital.
“How is she?” He asked
“I don’t know, they haven’t told me yet, oh god I hope she’s ok.”
“I’m sure she’s fine Liz, probably just a few scratches and bruises.” He said trying to calm her fears.
“Miss Parker?” A voice called
“Yes?” Liz replied standing up
“Hi, I’m Dr Newsom, I have been treating your daughter, and you are?” The Doctor asked looking at Max.
“Max Evans, I’m Ellie’s father.”
“Is she ok, can I see her?” Liz asked.
“She is stable at the moment, you can see her soon. Ellie took a very nasty fall, she has broken her arm, has several bruises, and a very bad bump on her head. At this point Miss Parker, Mr Evans, you should be under no illusions, Ellie is fighting for her life. The knock to her head put pressure on her brain and has caused her to fall into a coma, and we won’t know the extend of the damage until she wakes up.”
“Oh god!” Liz cried, putting her hands to her face. Her legs felt very wobbly at that moment, she didn’t feel like she had the strength to keep herself upright. Sensing her fear, Max put his arms around Liz and pulled her close to him.
“When can we see her?” Max asked.
“In a few minutes, I’ll send someone to get you.” The doctor replied before walking away.

Max and Liz stood in the middle of the ER department clinging on to each other. Tears streamed down Liz’s face as she clung onto Max for dear life. He in turn desperately tried to be strong for Liz, to give her the strength to keep going. The thought of loosing their little girl was too much for both of them to comprehend.
“Shhh it’s ok Liz, she’ll be ok, she’s a fighter remember.” Max whispered.
“I can’t loose her Max, I couldn’t live without her.” She sobbed.
“We’re not going to loose her, she’ll be ok. You have to believe that Liz.” Max replied as a nurse came to take them to Ellie.

Regaining her composure, Liz wiped away her tears and walked into the room where her daughter was. Nothing had prepared Liz for the sight in front of her. Ellie was extremely pale, tubes coming out of numerous places, her head was bandaged, along with her arm, and the bruising around her face was very evident.
“Oh, my poor baby.” Liz whispered, rushing to her daughter’s side. Max on the other hand stood in the doorway, frozen. It had suddenly hit home to him how sick his little girl really was. She looked nothing like the five year old who had celebrated her birthday just a day before.
“It’s ok sweetie, mummy’s here, you’re going to be all better soon.” Liz said as she moved a strand of Ellie’s hair away from her face.

Max and Liz stayed by Ellie’s bedside for the rest of the day, although there was no change.
“I should call Tess, let her know I won’t be coming home.” Max said getting up.
“You don’t have to stay Max.” Liz offered.
“I don’t want to be anywhere else Liz. I love our little girl and I want to be right here in case anything happens.” Max insisted. “Now I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He added before disappearing out the door to the pay phone.
“Tess it’s Max. Look Ellie had an accident at school, she’s in a pretty bad way, I’m gonna stay at the hospital tonight.”
“But we were supposed to be going out for a meal tonight.” Tess winged.
“We can go out for a meal any time Tess, Ellie’s life could be in danger right now, do you really think I could eat?” He snapped.
“But you could go back to the hospital after dinner.”
“No Tess.”
“Ok, I’ll come and see you at the hospital.”
“Ellie’s in intensive care Tess, you can’t just wander in. It’s close family only allowed, so they won’t let you in.”
“So when do I see you next?”
“When Ellie improves. I’m sorry Tess, but I have to be here in case something happens." He said hoping she would understand.
“Fine, whatever.” Tess snapped before putting the phone down. As he walked back to Ellie’s room, he couldn’t understand Tess’s reaction. To her the fact he was cancelling their meal was more important than the little girl’s life. Sometimes he wondered what he ever saw in Tess. As he approached the room, he saw Liz standing outside, leaning against the wall.
“Is everything ok Liz?” He asked getting worried.
“Yeah, the doctor is just checking Ellie, he said it would be distressing for me to watch so I should wait outside.” She said looking at him.

To him she looked like she hadn’t slept in days, her face was wracked with worry, her eyes so drained of emotion, he couldn’t help but put his arms around her. She fell into his embrace with amazing ease; he always seemed to know how to make her feel better. The pain that flowed through their bodies was the same, they felt so helpless, so unable to do anything for the poor girl lying in the hospital bed.
“Is there nothing you can do?” Liz whispered looking into his eyes.
“I can help with the healing of her injuries, but I can’t make her wake up Liz, it’s down to Ellie to find her way back to us.” He replied as she laid her head on his shoulder. Stroking her long silky hair, Max tried to comfort her, and in turn take comfort from it himself.
“Why Max, why us, why Ellie?” Liz asked as tears formed in her eyes once more.
“I don’t know Liz, I wish I could answer that.” He said lifting her head to look in her eyes once more. He saw so much grief inside her, so much pain engulfing her, he just wanted to take some of it away. Not thinking about it first, Max put his finger underneath her chin and tilted it upwards. Waiting for a second in case she objected, Max then slowly bent his head down, and lightly brushed her lips with his own. A spark of electricity ran through them as they briefly touched. It wasn’t really the time or the place, but somehow Max felt it was right, he had to show her he still really cared for her. As he started to pull away after the kiss, he felt Liz’s arms move from around his waist to around his neck, and pull him close to her, so they could kiss once again. In her mind she didn’t know what she was doing, but in her heart, Liz knew she couldn’t not hold him and kiss him, it was the only way she was going to get through the tough time ahead.

“Erm, Miss Parker, Mr Evans, you can see your daughter again now.” The doctor said as they looked embarrassed at getting caught kissing.
“How is she?” Max asked.
“There’s no change I’m afraid.” He replied.
“Max, you’ve got to try and help her.” Liz pleaded, as they resumed their places either side of Ellie’s bed.
“Ok, I’ll relieve the pressure on her brain that should help.” Max replied, putting two hands on Ellie’s small arm. As he made the connection, a rush of images came from Ellie, memories from inside her and the happiness she felt when Max and Liz were together, the sadness she had felt when comforting Liz the previous night. Concentrating on finding the pressure to her brain, Max went to work to mend the damage. Once had had finished, he reluctantly broke the connection and relinquished his grasp on her arm.
“Did it work?” She asked hopefully.
“I think so, it’s down to Ellie to fight now.” He replied.

That night was the longest of their lives. Max tried to persuade Liz to lie down on the sofa in the room, but she would have none of it. She wanted to stay right beside her daughter in case Ellie woke up. Instead, she got a few fitful hours of sleep, lying her head down on Ellie’s bed, never once breaking her grip on Ellie’s hand. Max on the other hand didn’t get any sleep at all, he was trying to find a way in which he could help Ellie come back to them. As he watched his two girls sleep, Max knew he had to persuade Liz to take him back. If Ellie’s accident had showed him anything it was that life was too short to settle for second best, and Tess was definitely that.

Part 5

Where do we go – By Stephen Gately

I ask, when will I see you again
Once was all that we had
And your touch I’ve forgotten
How good it was
Question mark trade of thoughts

Turning around in mind
Can’t let go
Visions of you baby
Is all that I know

Where do we go from here
How do we find our way to go on
Promise you’ll stay by my side
Don’t walk away from me now
Where do we go

I ask myself where are you now
Are you alone in the night
Do you feel the same way
I’m feeling for you
‘Cause baby I need to know

Constantly sleepless
Alone in my bed
Visions of you babe
Is all that I have

Where do we go from here
How do we find our way to go on
Promise you’ll stay by my side
Don’t walk away from me now
Where do we go

Oh where do we go

Constantly sleepless
Alone in my bed
Visions of you babe
Is all that I have

Where do we go from here
How do we find our way to go on
Promise you’ll stay by my side
Don’t walk away from me now
Where do we go

That day very little changed with Ellie, the doctor and nurses came in every so often to check on her, to take her temperature or change bandages but that was the only distraction. Max couldn’t persuade Liz to leave her bedside even for a moment, not even to eat something, and in the end he brought some food from the hospital canteen and forced her to eat it.
“Liz if you don’t eat something and get some rest, you’ll be no good to Ellie when she wakes up.” Max said sternly.
“I can’t Max, I have to be here beside her. I’m ……. I’m scared something will happen if I go away.” She admitted.
“I’ll be here Liz, I won’t let anything happen to her, I promised.” He said putting his hand on top of hers.

That night, Max finally got Liz to sleep a couple of hours on the sofa, she was dead on her feet, and needed a few hours of uninterrupted, comfortable sleep. Max had also phoned Tess that evening, explaining that he was still going to stay at the hospital, both Liz and Ellie needed him.
“What about me Max? I need you too.” She complained.
“You’re not on the verge of dying Tess!” He shot back.
“Oh so that’s what it takes, me to end up in hospital before I see you.”
“Tess I could really do without the melodramatics right now. I can only cope with one crisis at a time. Once Ellie wakes up and starts getting better I’ll be able to come home, but until then I’m staying here. I’m sorry you don’t understand, but that’s the way it’s got to be.” He insisted.

The following morning, Liz resumed her vigil beside Ellie’s bed, sitting, holding her hand, talking to her, telling her stories, anything that might bring Ellie out of the deep sleep she was in. As he watched her, he could tell from Liz’s body language that she was starting to loose hope, it was now the third day Ellie had spent in hospital and there was no change, nothing had got worse, but nothing had got better either. Walking outside and sitting down on a nearby chair, Max put his head in his hands and tried to contain his emotions. He felt physically and mentally wrecked. He had wracked his brains over the previous nights trying to find some way he could help wake Ellie up, but his powers were just no good. It was the first time he had truly felt helpless and not in control, he couldn’t cope with it, he couldn’t cope with loosing his daughter, his one tie to Liz.

“Flounder and Sebastian watched in amazement as Ursula’s magic powers changed Ariel into a human girl.” Liz read from the book resting on Ellie’s bed. The Little Mermaid was one of her daughter’s favourite Disney films, and the book had been a gift from one of her friends for Ellie’s birthday. Liz hadn’t had a chance to read it to Ellie before, and now she wasn’t sure if Ellie could even hear her. Still, Liz was determined not to give up on the little girl, so she kept reading.
“Suddenly Ariel could no longer live underwater.” She read. Then suddenly the small hand that Liz had gripped almost non-stop twitched. Looking up from the book, Liz stared at her daughter and saw a miracle unfold in front of her very eyes. Ellie took in a deep breath and then her eyelids began to flutter slightly until the little girl forced them open to look around the strange room she was in.
“Oh my god! Max!” Liz yelled. She could scarcely believe what she was seeing and desperately needed someone to confirm she wasn’t imagining things.
“What? What’s wrong, should I get a doctor?” He asked worriedly, running in from the corridor.
“Look!” She beamed, pointing at Ellie. The little girl slowly opened her eyes once again for a few seconds before closing them again.
“Oh my god Ellie, sweetheart we’re here for you.” He said rushing to his daughter’s side and taking hold of her free hand. “We’ve missed you so much.” He added the elation in his heart spreading like wildfire inside his body.
“I was sleeping.” She croaked, her voice thick with sleep.
“That’s right sweetheart, but you’re gonna be ok now.” Liz replied, moving some of Ellie’s hair away from her face. Relief and belief her daughter was going to be ok was spread all over Liz’s face, emotions she had been afraid to feel over the previous few days.

After the initial dubitation, Max called for the doctor, so that he could check Ellie over. As the doctor came in to check their little girl, Max and Liz headed outside to the hospital garden for a few moments to catch their breath.

“She’s gonna be ok!” Liz cried, as tears ran down her cheeks, finally allowing herself to believe it.
“Yeah, she’s gonna be ok.” He replied pulling her close and holding her tight. He felt so happy, so overjoyed inside, Ellie was going to make a full recovery, he wasn’t going to loose her.
“Oh Max I was so scared.” Liz said pulling back slightly and looking into his eyes.
“I know, so was I Liz.” He replied looking back at her. Their eyes locked together, neither wanting to look away. He held her tightly in his arms, refusing to let her move away. They both needed it; they had been to hell and back over the previous few days, their only solace was each other. As she rested her head on his chest, Max gently stroked her hair, then kissed the top of her forehead. It was only the slightest of touches with his lips, but neither could deny the emotions it conjured up inside them. As she lifted her head level with his once again, she saw the longing for her in his eyes, she moved forward and touched her lips with his. Closing her eyes, she melted into his arms, the kiss deepening, full of passion ……… full of relief ……… full of love.

“We shouldn’t be doing this.” Liz said when they pulled away from each other..
“Shhh, not now Liz, please.” He replied, putting his finger to her mouth. He didn’t want her to break the spell they were both under at that very moment. Moving his finger round, he traced the outline of her perfect lips. She had been at the hospital for three days solid, no shower or bath, and only the change of clothes Maria had brought up to her. Yet to him she still looked perfect, he didn’t care about anything but the look in her eyes. Ellie was getting better, and he was convinced he’d seen the sparkle return to her eyes, albeit momentarily. Unable to hold back any longer, he descended upon her lips once again, drinking in the heady feeling that flooded his mind. Liz’s body hummed all over, it was only a kiss, but to Liz it was so much more. She had convinced herself she would never feel this way again, and it fell like a dream to be melting in Max’s arms as he kissed her so passionately. His tongue moved inside the crevices of her mouth, desperately trying to find hers to duel with.

When they eventually broke apart, both struggled with the passion swimming in their bodies. Liz tore herself from his arms, feeling a sudden coldness as she moved away from the heat his body was radiating. She needed to sort her head out, to think straight, to catch hold of her emotions. Things had been so tense, so full of worry over Ellie, the last thing she had expected was to end up in Max’s arms. But what about Tess, she couldn’t help thinking that it was wrong, he was with Tess.
“We should go back, the doctor should have finished with Ellie now.” Liz finally said, turning and walking towards the door. Max hung back for a moment, not sure how to read Liz’s actions. She had enjoyed the kiss, it hadn’t been one way on his part, but why was she acting so coy about it now? It wasn’t like it was the first time they had ever kissed; they used to do it all the time. But that was a long time ago he reminded himself before following her back inside the hospital.

When Liz saw Ellie this time, her daughter seemed a lot more awake.
“Hi sweetheart, how are you feeling?” Liz asked.
“My head hurts.” Ellie complained.
“Oh I know darling, it will get better soon though, I promise.” Liz replied stroking Ellie’s cheek.
“Where’s daddy?” She enquired.
“I’m here Ellie.” Max replied, entering the room. “You gave us quite a scare there babe.” He added standing behind Liz and putting his hand on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry. I managed to climb to the very top of the climbing frame, but then my shoes went all slippery and made me fall. I don’t like my shoes anymore.” She replied smiling faintly.
“It’s ok, we’ll get you new shoes when you come out, all we care about is that you’re gonna be ok. Just don’t go climbing on climbing frames any time soon, I can only handle something like this once in a lifetime!” Liz replied kissing her daughter’s forehead.
“You look tired mummy.” Ellie said raising her hand to Liz’s cheek.
“Well I guess I haven’t had much sleep the last few nights, something about my little baby in hospital I think.” Liz joked.
“I think your mummy needs to get some sleep, don’t you. “ Max said softly
“No Max, I don’t want to leave her yet.” Liz replied before Ellie had a chance to say anything.
“Liz you’ve got to sleep, I can call Maria, she will sit with Ellie. Please, don’t make me drag you out.”
“Like you could!” She whipped back.
“Want me to try?” He asked seductively.
“I’m ok mummy, I’m feeling much better. I want you to sleep so you’ll look better when you come back.” Ellie replied looking at her mother’s tired face.
“Hey, thanks Ellie! Well ok then, only if you’re sure. We’ll call Auntie Maria, she’ll come and stay with you.” Liz said as Max disappeared outside to the payphone.

When Maria arrived, the first thing she did was give Liz a huge hug.
“I am so sorry, I wanted to come and see Ellie but they said it was family only.”
“It’s ok Maria, it was tough but we’re over it now. Max has been brilliant though, I don’t know if I’d of coped without him.”
“Right, now go home Liz, get some rest, I’ll stay with this little one.” Maria aid smiling at Ellie.
“Oh I don’t know Maria …….” Liz started, afraid to leave her daughter’s side.
“Go Liz, I won’t take no for an answer.” Maria ordered.
“Ok, ok, I know when I’m not wanted.” Liz replied, admitting defeat.
“Come on, I’ll drive you home.” Max offered.
“Thanks.” Liz replied, kissing her daughter. “I’ll be back soon I promise sweetheart.” Liz added before heading out the room with Max in toe.
“Are you sure you don’t mind dropping me off home? I’ve got my car here, I can drive it.” She said as they walked down the corridor.
“Liz you haven’t had a proper night’s sleep in over three days, I don’t want you to crash on the way home or something!” He said pushing open the door to the outside world.
“Hey, you haven’t had much sleep either.” She protested.
“I know, so we’ll get home together safely this way.” He said getting into the jeep. His words made little sense to Liz, but she decided to leave it, there was no point arguing when he had made up his mind.

The drive to her house was quiet, both lost in their own little worlds. Music from the radio flooded Liz’s ears as she casually stared out the window. As they pulled up outside her house, she dug around in her bag and pulled out her keys.
“Do you want to come in or something?” She offered.
“Sure.” He replied not really knowing why he was accepting.
“Do you want a drink? Tea? Soda? Juice?” She asked as they stepped inside the house.
“A soda would be great, thanks.” Max said, following Liz into the kitchen. After taking two cans from the fridge, Liz proceeded to pour the contents into the glasses. As she handed him the drink, Liz was unable to stop herself from looking into his eyes. They seemed to be communicating unspoken words to her brain. The smouldering look was reeling her in as she found herself gravitating towards him without telling her feet to move.

The temperature the room rose a degree or two just by their intense stare. Now that they didn’t have to worry about Ellie, their feelings for each other came rushing to the surface. She knew it was wrong, but her ability to refuse Max has dwindled over the past few days. He had been there for her when she needed him most, and she wanted so much to feel his bare skin close to her. As if he read her mind through her eyes, Max pulled her close to his body, and dipped his head to capture her lips with his own. The kiss was full of emotion and raw passion, captivating everything they had experienced over the previous few days. He couldn’t stop the rush of feelings flooding his body, holding her in his arms, kissing her soft red lips, all common sense flew out of his mind. As they kissed, his hands roamed across her back and down to rest on her hips. It felt so wonderful to feel her body flush against his once again.

His hands touching her made Liz’s head feel light, she hadn’t felt this way in a very long time. Her hands ran down his back to where the edge of his T-shirt rested. Without thinking first, she took part of the material in her hands, pulling it up and over his head, then allowed the white material to fall to the floor with a quiet thud. She couldn’t stop herself from touching his tanned skin and raking her finger nails over his tort chest muscles. He closed his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath, enjoying the feather light touch as her fingers danced over his skin. Not a word was spoken as he undid each tiny button that held together her red knitted top. When he had finished he allowed the material to fall away, exposing her perfect bust. His breathing shallowed somewhat as he drunk in the sight of the beauty in front of him. His hands rubbed the tops of her shoulders before walking up her neck to her chin. He traced the contour of her jaw before stroking her cheek with his finger. His fingers seemed to take on a will of their own as they moved over to her lips and touched them softly. Involuntarily her lips parted slightly and she gently kissed and sucked the tip of his finger. She was torturing him and he was loving every moment of it. Reluctantly pulling his finger away from her lips, he moved his head down to replace it with his own mouth.

As their lips connected once again, Max scooped her up into his arms and carried her upstairs to her bedroom. Breaking the kiss, he laid her out on the bed, deafly untied her shoes, and slipped them off, before working his way back up her body, kissing the bare flesh of her stomach and neck until he reached her mouth once again.

As he undid her bra and started to caress her perfect breasts, Liz groaned. The feelings inside her were too strong to deny, she was loving every moment of being in his arms. She kissed his shoulder and nipped at his neck as she allowed the wonderful emotions to engulf her body.

Sliding his hands down her sides, Max eventually reached the waistband of her jeans. Lifting his head to search her eyes for approval, she paused for a second before nodding her ok. She knew there was no turning back, and she had no intention of saying no. Slowly he deafly undid the button and pulled the zipper of her jeans. The sound of the zipper moving down seemed to be magnified one hundred times, and it sent shock waves through her body.

Passion and pure desire took over them, and soon all that was between them was Max’s boxers and Liz’s panties. Wanting to remove the last hurdle, Max slipped his fingers either side and pulled them down her legs and let them fall onto the growing heap of clothes that were on the floor. Taking a moment, Max took in the sight of the naked beauty in front of him. Liz looked back at him with a shy expression. Her body had changed since the last time he had seen her with nothing on, having Ellie had seen to that, she wondered if he still liked what he saw.
“You are too beautiful for words.” He whispered, reading her mind, as he placed his hand on her stomach and gently caressed her skin. Her whole body was screaming out for his touch, her skin was on fire, she felt like an electric current was being pumped through her body, she needed him more than she had needed anything in her life.

As they joined as one, all the memories of their last time came flooding back.
They had been so young, so in love, so full of hope for the future. She had thought his destiny had meant they couldn’t or shouldn’t be together. She had been scared, had run, had shut him out to stop herself from getting hurt again. But she had been wrong, their love was still every bit as strong as that day.

Passion and physical need filled their bodies as they made love together, reaching their peak as one and collapsing together in each other’s arms. It took a while to come down from the amazing high they had both felt, but Liz needed to speak.
“Max this is wrong, what about Tess?” She said quietly. As painful as the words were, she needed to say them, she had to know how he really felt.
“If you haven’t figured out by now that I don’t love Tess, you’re a fool Liz. All this time you’ve pushed me away to her, but I can’t create feelings that aren’t there. I can’t make myself love someone else, not when I am still so totally in love with you Liz. Please don’t push me away again.” He said.
“I don’t think I could push you away again even if I tried.” She said snuggling up to his chest. “You’ve made me remember everything I’ve missed over the last five years. I forgot how good it feels to be in your arms, to feel your touch, to make love to you. I can’t let you go now Max.” She replied lifting her head to look into his eyes.
“Then take me and hold on to me forever Liz Parker, I’m not going anywhere.” He replied kissing her forehead. Soon the two lovers fell into a deep peaceful sleep, content in being entwined in each other’s arms.

The shrill sound of the telephone ringing brought Liz out of her slumber.
“Hello?” She said groggily.
“Where’s Max?” Tess said rudely
“Hello Tess, I’m fine thank you.” Liz mocked, frustrated at Tess’s disrespectfulness. “You want Max? Well he’s downstairs at the moment, hang on I’ll just get him.” She replied nudging Max, who was dozing beside her, to wake him up.
“What’s wrong?” He asked
“It’s Tess.” She whispered as her hand covering the receiver.
“Oh, ok.” Max said taking a deep breath before taking the phone. “Hi Tess, what’s wrong?”
“What’s wrong? What the hell do you think is wrong? Why are you at Liz’s, you should be here with me, I haven’t seen you in three days.” She ranted.
“I fell asleep ok, it happens, get over it Tess. It’s been a really hard few days for me, I’ve had no sleep, and I just flaked out on the sofa.” He lied.
“Well I want you to come straight home now, I miss you.” She said trying to put on a sweet sickly voice.
“Ok, whatever, I’ll be home soon.” He said before leaning over Liz to put the phone down.

“Are you going to go back to her Max? Please be honest, I need to know where I stand.” Liz blurted out, afraid of the answer.
“Is that what you think? That I could go back to Tess after what we’ve just shared. I love you Liz so much, but I owe it to Tess to tell her face to face that I’m leaving her and not over the phone, you understand don’t you?” He said praying she would as he stared into her eyes.
“Yeah I understand.” She sighed. He was still leaning over her in the same position after putting the phone down, and as he started to move away, his bare chest brushed against her skin. The touch sent shock waves through his entire body, causing a shiver to run down his spine.
“I guess I could stay a bit longer though.” He said seductively.
“Mmm, could have potential.” She replied huskily, putting her arms around his neck and drawing his lips in to hers.

An hour later, Max pulled into the driveway of the house he shared with Tess.
“This is it, I gonna tell her then go back to Liz.” He thought to himself, taking a deep breath and climbing out of the jeep.
“I though you were coming straight home, it doesn’t take an hour to get home from Liz’s.” Tess yelled as he walked through the door.
“I had to take Liz back to the hospital. Oh and Ellie is getting better now, she woke up earlier today, thanks for asking and caring.” He snapped back.
“I do care. I care about you Max.” She replied sweetly, throwing her arms around his neck. “Come on, let’s go upstairs and I’ll make you feel better.” She added before trying to kiss him.
“No Tess!” He complained, pushing her away from him.
“What’s wrong with you?” She yelled back, frustrated that her attempts at seducing him hadn’t worked. He had been away for what seemed like an age to her and she had been convinced he wouldn’t spurn her advances.

“How about you listen to me for a change. Sit down.” He ordered.
“I don’t want to sit down.” She replied sulkily
“Sit down Tess!” He insisted.
“Fine!” She replied falling into a nearby seat in the lounge.
“Now, what happened to Ellie has made me rethink a few things, analyse where my life is going or not as the case maybe.”
“I don’t follow.”
“I’ve been denying my true feelings for a long time Tess, and I am sorry, but you’re gonna get hurt. I have never stopped loving Liz, and I never will. Seeing our little girl lying in a hospital bed made me realise how much I want to be a part of their life, be a proper father to Ellie, and love Liz. Liz pushed me away because of our destiny, even though she was carrying my child. Well now I’m pushing my destiny away, I will choose who I want to be with, I am my own person, I have my own mind.” He said adamantly.
“You want to go to Liz?” She asked, not catching his drift.
“Yes, but I don’t think you understand. I don’t *want* to Tess, I *am* going.” He stressed.
“What about me? Where does that leave me?” She wined.
“Like I said, I am sorry I’ve hurt you by using you, but I don’t love you Tess, and I can’t stay with you.” He replied.

The room went silent for a few moments, as Tess’s mind went into overdrive, struggling to come up with something that would stop him leaving. “There must be something I can say or do to make him stay.” She thought to herself, then suddenly an idea sprung into her head. “Yes!” She yelled to herself.

“Well ……….. well maybe …….. maybe I can throw a spanner in the works.” She snapped with a glistening in her eyes.
“Oh yeah, like what? I really don’t think there is anything you can do or say to stop me from going.” He replied adamantly.
“Ok, what if ………. what if I said I was pregnant?” She blurted out. At that moment she was smiling on the inside. “Yes that’s what will keep him, he won’t leave me if I’m pregnant.” She laughed inwardly to herself.

In this Life – By Ronan Keating

For all I’ve been blessed with in this life
There was an emptiness in me
I was imprisoned by the power of gold
With one honest touch you set me free

Let the world stop turning
Let the sun stop burning
Let them tell me love’s not worth going through
If it all falls apart
I will know deep in my heart
The only dream that matters had come true
In this life, I was loved by you

For every mountain I have climbed
And every raging river crossed
You were the treasure that I longed to find
Without your love I would be lost

Let the world stop turning
Let the sun stop burning
Let them tell me love’s not worth going through
If it all falls apart
I will know deep in my heart
The only dream that matters had come true
In this life, I was loved by you

In this life I was loved by you

Part 6

“Are you?” He asked pointedly
“Erm, yeah, I mean yes I am.” She replied trying to sound confident.
“I don’t believe you.” He shot back.
“What, you think I’m lying?” She yelled
“Yes!”
“How dare you Max, why don’t you believe me?”
“Oh maybe because you’ve lied and manipulated me way too many times in the past.”
“How could you not believe me?” She exasperated.
“Ok then, say I believe you, so you’re pregnant. How far along are you?” He asked going along with her little plan for a minute.
“Erm …. about a month I guess, why?” She said unsure what he was getting at.
“A month, oh well that settles it then. It can’t possibly be mine.” He replied nonchalantly.
“What! Why not? Are you accusing me of sleeping around? How dare you Max!” She roared.
“I’m sorry Tess, but if you’re pregnant then yes, you must have been sleeping around.” He said pausing for a moment before continuing. “In case you’ve forgotten, we haven’t slept together in nearly two months. I had that huge important case at work for five weeks meaning I was only coming home to change my clothes and sleep, then you were busy with your girlfriends, then Ellie’s party and now the accident. I don’t have to be a mathematician to work out that it isn’t physically possible for you to be a month pregnant with my child. Am I right?” He asked staring straight at her.

On the inside, he silently commended himself on being so calm. Here she was trying to trap him into staying with her, and he was taking it all in his stride. At that moment he realised how little he felt for Tess, and how extremely low she would stoop to keep her grip on him.
“Oh I hate you, I can’t believe what you’re accusing me of, how could you even think I do something like that!” She yelled running over to him and pounding his chest with her fists.
“I said am I right?” He insisted, grabbing hold of her wrists so she couldn’t hit him anymore.
“Ok, yeah there’s no baby!” She yelled back, but then calmed herself and added “But I don’t want to loose you Max, please I need you. I can’t go on without you, I love you.” She said forcing tears to roll down her cheeks as she placed her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest.
“You don’t need me Tess, you just don’t want Liz to have me, but you’ve lost this time. Now I am going to go upstairs, pack some things and walk out this house. I will be back tomorrow to collect the rest of my things, but after that I don’t want to know you Tess ever again.” He said firmly, ripping apart her grasp on him and pushing her away.
“You can’t do this to me Max!” She cried as she landed in a heap on the floor.
“I just have Tess.” He added before heading upstairs. As she watched him walk up the flight of stairs, Tess suddenly realised her grip on Max was gone. Her world was crumbling in front of her eyes, and for once there was absolutely nothing she could do about it. No amount of mind warping in the world would correct the situation and bring Max back to her. This time real tears tumbled down her cheeks, as the feeling of being sad and alone in the world engulfed her body.

“So, how’s my little baby?” Liz said smiling as she walked into Ellie’s room.
“Ok.” Her daughter said cheerily.
“Well you’re looking much better.” Liz replied.
“Yeah so are you.” Maria pointed out.
“It’s amazing what a few hours rest, and hot shower and a change of clothes can do to you.” Liz replied not looking at her friend.
“Yeah, if it’s rest you’ve had. Something you wanna tell me Liz?” Maria asked, her extrasensory perception working overtime.
“Erm …..” Liz stumbled. No matter what she tried, hiding things from Maria was something she had never managed to master.
“Let’s go and get a coffee from the canteen, you’ll be ok won’t you Ellie.” Maria said winking at the little girl. After a nod of approval from her, Maria grabbed Liz’s arm and lead her out to the corridor before Liz could protest.

By the time they reached the canteen, Maria felt like she was going to burst. It had taken every ounce of self control on her part not to grill Liz on the way down.
“So, how about spilling the beans.” Maria ordered sitting down at an empty table.
“Well, I don’t really know where to start.” Liz replied, absentmindedly tracing the rim of her cup with her finger.
“At the beginning, I want to know everything. This has something to do with Max doesn’t it?” She probed.
“Erm, yeah.” Liz replied as a shy smile spread over her face.
“Come on Liz, don’t leave me in suspense.” Maria yelped.
“Ok, Max has been really great throughout the last few days, it was really tough. I know that there is no way I’d of been able to cope if he hadn’t of been right beside me. I guess it started at Ellie’s party, when he kissed me, he resurrected all the feelings I’ve managed to bury for five years.” She said, pausing for a moment to take a sip of coffee. “I sort of ignored it though, I was scared I guess. Then when Ellie had her accident, Max was here beside me helping me through it. I guess after the relief that she was going to be ok, neither of us had the ability to fight our feelings.”
“And!” Maria said excitedly.
“And what? I’m not going to tell you every little detail Maria! ………. Ok, yeah we went back to my house, and one thing sorta lead to another, and we ended up in bed.” Liz replied sheepishly.
“Yes!” Maria exclaimed.
“Then we had our alarm call though.” Liz added.
“Huh?”
“Tess. She called to find out where Max was, the hospital must have told her he had gone home and she tried my place.”
“And you were doing what at the time?” Maria probed.
“Sleeping, nothing more sinister. But I couldn’t help but ask him what he was going to do.”
“And.”
“And, he was going to see Tess after he dropped me off here. I guess he should be there at the moment.” She replied.
“Oh Lizzy this is perfect, it’s just what you wanted.” Maria cried, throwing her arms around her friend.
“Yeah it feels really wonderful. I just can’t help feeling sorry for Tess though.” Liz replied.
“What are you like Liz! You always think about other people, how about being selfish and thinking about yourself for a change, and perhaps Ellie. She’s gonna be ecstatic when she finds out.”
“You’ve got to promise not to tell her though ‘ria. Max and I want to wait until she’s out of hospital and tell her together. Promise?” Liz said sternly.
“Ok, ok I promise. Oh I am just so happy for you. You deserve some love in your life again.” Maria replied.
“Yeah, I guess I’d forgotten how great love is.” She replied “And how wonderful it feels to be wrapped in Max’s arms.” She added to herself.

“Anyway, I’m not so wrapped up in my problems to not notice you Maria, you’re happy too aren’t you?” Liz replied, looking at her friend square in the eyes. She could tell her friend had a secret she was just bursting to tell, and Liz was going to make sure they didn’t leave until Maria told her.
“Yeah of course I’m happy, Ellie’s ok, you’re back with Max, ……. and ……..” She trailed off, lost in her own dream world.
“And what Maria?” Liz asked, brining her friend back to reality.
“Ok, you’ve got a secret from Ellie, I’ve got a secret from Michael.” She grinned evilly.
“Go on.” Liz replied intrigued.
“Ok, I’m gonna tell Michael tonight, but I guess it would be ok to tell you first. I’m three months pregnant.” She replied beaming a huge smile across her face.
“Oh my god ‘ria that’s wonderful!” Liz cried hugging her friend.
“Thanks. I wouldn’t say we planned it, but I really hope he’ll be pleased. He will be won’t he?” Maria asked with doubt in her mind.
“Of course he will ‘ria, he’s gonna be so ecstatic. Just look at how great he is with Ellie. Oh Maria I am so pleased for you.” Liz replied.
“Yeah, I think life in general is pretty good right now.” Maria replied smiling. “All we need now is Max to move in with you and Ellie and then things couldn’t be better!” She added a plan forming in her head.
“Don’t even think about trying to meddle in that, if it happens it happens. Right Maria?”
“Oh of course Lizzy.” Her friend replied sweetly.

Coming Back – by Stephen Gately

When you do that thing you do
You fill me with desire
Maybe it’s because of you
I can’t get no higher
You may not be right for me
But I don’t give a damn cause
What I feel is exact
That’s all I need

I don’t care about what people say
I keep coming back, coming back
Coming back for more
I’m still up for one more round
Let’s play

I get so high, high
And though you lie, lie
I just don’t mind, mind
Coming back for more
My friends they say, say
You gotta get away, away
You know the next day
I’ll be back for more

Baby, you’re enough for me
I don’t need no other
And all the time I’m not with you
Babe, I miss the fire
Some may think it’s scandalous
Some may say it’s crazy
They can’t see what’s going on
Between you and me

I have never felt like this before
I keep coming back, coming back
Coming back for more
Tell me what am I to do
I need more and more.

Part 7

“Hi Maria, I’m home.” Michael called out as he arrived home from work.
“Hi Michael, I’m in the kitchen.” She called back, smiling to herself as she chopped up the carrots for dinner.
“Hi babe.” He said, kissing her cheek before sitting down at the kitchen table.

“What’s for dinner?” He asked as he picked up some mail that was sitting beside him.
“Chicken, baked potatoes and carrots, hope that’s ok, it’ll be ready in about ten minutes?”
“Yeah, it’s fine, erm ‘ria, what’s this?” He asked holding up a pair of little white booties.
“Oh yeah, aren’t they sooo cute, I just couldn’t resist them.” Maria giggled
“Right!” Michael replied, rolling his eyes before heading into the bedroom to freshen up before dinner. As he walked in, the first thing he noticed was a large brown teddy bear lying in the middle of the bed. Shrugging his shoulders once more, he headed into the bathroom. After washing his hands, he reached for the towel, and was shocked what he found in it’s place. Picking it up, his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as he touched the tiny light green babygrow.
“Ok Maria, what’s going on?” Michael asked heading back to the kitchen with the offending items in his hands.
“What do you mean sweetie?” Maria replied sweetly, slowly turning round to face her man.
“Teddies, booties, babygrows, something you wanna tell me?”
“Take a wild stab in the dark Michael.” She replied wiggling her eyebrows at him. For a whole two minutes, Michael stood there in front of her, holding the items and moving his eyes backwards and forwards from each item.
“You’re not?” He said, suddenly realising what she was getting at.
“Yeap, I am Spaceboy. In six months time there’s gonna be a baby Spaceboy for us! Or girl of course.” She replied beaming.
“Oh my god, I don’t believe it!” He yelled, dropping the items in his hand to the floor, sweeping Maria up into his arms and spinning them around. The huge grin that was spread over his face confirmed to Maria how truly happy he was with her news.

Nearly two weeks later, Liz was able to bring Ellie home from the hospital. Apart from the lightweight cast on her arm and a couple of dulling scratches and bruises, Ellie had no lasting effects from her tumble. As soon as the little girl walked into the house, she could sense something was different. Her eyes drifted to Max’s jacket was hanging up in the hall, his briefcase on the coffee table, shoes in the kitchen, she knew something had changed.
“Go on sweetheart, you’re home now, it’s ok.” Liz said watching her little girl who was standing frozen in the hallway still. Turning slowly, Ellie looked back at her mother and father who stood behind her and then grinned widely.
“Daddy, you’re home now aren’t you?” She said innocently. Max and Liz exchanged a glance before Max answered.
“Yes I am, is that ok?” He asked crouching down to her level.
“Of course it is!” She yelled, putting her arms around his neck and hugging him.
“How did you know Ellie, we were going to tell you once you were settle in again?” Liz said, as Max stood up with Ellie in his arms.
“I told you, I can sense things. I knew you’d get back together eventually.” She replied smiling.
“I guess you’ve got a gift that I didn’t know about.” Max replied glancing at Liz with a scolding look before smiling.
“I want to go and play now.” Ellie said wriggling out of Max’s grasp and dashing upstairs.

“Well she took that well.” Liz said, putting her arms around Max’s waist.
“I think so, now what’s this about her being able to sense things.” He asked pulling her around to face him.
“It’s a long story, I’ll tell you about it later.” She replied lifting her head up to kiss him.
“Mmm, make sure you do.” He replied before deepening the kiss. As they stood in the hall, engrossed in each other’s embrace, a little voice called out.
“Eeeww!” Ellie called from behind them, screwing her face up.
“What’s wrong, aren’t I allowed to kiss your mummy?” Max asked looking at his little girl from over Liz’s shoulder.
“No, kissing’s yucky!” She replied before running out into the garden with her doll.
“That’s the sort of attitude I like to hear from my little girl. Do you think she’ll be able to keep it till she’s at least 30?” He asked moving a strand of hair from her face to behind her ear.
“Sorry Max, but I’d give her about eight years before she finds out about the wonders of boys and kissing.” Liz replied.
“Oh no, I can’t even comprehend the thought of my daughter dating.”
“Well we’ve got a few years yet.” Liz replied, staring into his deep brown eyes.
“Yeah, and I intend to be right here for every one of them.” He replied, covering her lips once again.

The following weekend, Max and Liz arranged a barbecue, inviting Isabelle, Alex, Michael, Maria and their parents. It was partly to welcome Ellie home, but also to congratulate Michael and Maria on their news.
“Oh Liz, it’s so good to see her running about again.” Diane Evans said as Liz handed her a drink.
“I know, I have to admit there were a couple of times when I didn’t think she would. Thankfully though she’s got no lasting scars, I don’t think she remembers very much of it.”
“Children have a great way of bouncing back from anything, no matter what.” She replied smiling before Liz walked away.
“So, did you ask her?” Philip asked his wife.
“No, I can’t just come out with it, what if we’re wrong.” Diane replied.
“Diane just look at them, they are definitely in love, it’s no mistake.” He replied.

“So Michael, are you ready for all the mood swings, demands and cravings now Maria is in her ‘condition’.” Alex joked.
“Uh oh baby talk, I’m outta here!” Max added, heading off to check on the food cooking on the barbecue.
“Yeah funny Alex! When’s your turn?” Michael whipped back, as he cuddled his girlfriend.
“Well I’d have one tomorrow if it was down to me, but you know I kinda have to get Isabelle to agree first.” He replied smiling at his wife. Out of all of them, Alex and Isabelle had been the only couple to get married, two years previously, and they were the only ones without children now.
”Hey don’t look at me like that Whitman, and don’t get any ideas either! There is no way you’re getting me pregnant, I’m not ready to lose my figure just yet! No offence Maria.” Isabelle retorted as she swatted her husband’s arm.
“None taken. But just for the record, it feels great!” She replied snuggling further into Michael’s arms.

As Liz looked on, she couldn’t help but feel amazing happiness for Maria. It had been hard for her, getting Michael to open up and admit he really did care for her. Their relationship wasn’t as plain sailing as others, but they had finally accepted they both needed each other, and the baby was a sign of their lives together.
“Hey, what’ya thinking?” Max asked, leaving the barbecue, coming up behind Liz and circling his arms around her waist.
“Just looking at how happy ‘ria and Michael are, I’m so pleased for them both. They’re gonna make great parents.” She replied.
“Yeah, I don’t think we’ve done too badly in the parent department either, Ellie’s turned out to be a great kid.” Max replied watching Ellie playing with her doll.
“Yeah, even after everything we’ve put her through. Most kids would be confused as hell, but not Ellie.” Liz replied
“So what about you two, when’s it gonna be your turn again?” Michael asked, looking at how cosy Max and Liz were with each other.
“Yeah Liz, Ellie’s five now, I’m sure she’d love a little brother or sister, wouldn’t you sweetheart?” Maria said looking at Ellie.
“Yay a baby!” Ellie cheered.
“Uh oh, no way!” Max replied quickly.
“Yeah, one’s quite enough for us ‘ria.” Liz added smiling.
“Oh you don’t mean that, she’s sooo cute.” Maria replied hugging the little girl.
“Yeah thanks Maria, don’t go putting ideas in her head. Like Liz said, one’s quite enough for us!” Max added smiling at Liz as she turned to face Max. Over her shoulder, she could see Diane and Philip watching them.
“By the way, I think it might be time to talk to your parents, either that or they’re gonna think that you’re two timing me with Tess!” She replied.
“Never!” He breathed, kissing her soft lips. “Ok, I guess you’re right.” He added when they eventually broke away. Taking Liz by the hand, he lead them over to where both sets of parents were sitting. It was the first time Liz had seen Nancy and Jeff since her father’s outburst the day of Ellie’s accident. Liz hadn’t forgiven him, but had got past the point of caring. If her parents couldn’t accept her choices in life then that was their loss she thought.

“Erm guys, there’s something Liz and I want to tell you.” Max said
“Let me guess, you and Liz have finally seen sense and got back together?” Philip asked.
“Philip!” Diane lectured.
“Does anyone not know?” Max asked stunned by what his father had said.
“Sorry son, but it’s pretty obvious. And I might add it’s about time too, your mother and I never understood why you two split up in the first place.” Philip replied honestly.
“Dad!” Max exasperated.
“It’s ok.” Liz whispered, squeezing his hand. “Mum, dad?” Liz said looking her parents.
“Well I guess at least Ellie will have a proper family life then.” Nancy retorted.
“Look I know you don’t like what I have done with my life. Yes I have made some mistakes, but I’m a better person for them. Are you ever going to forgive me, or will I be punished for the rest of my life?” Liz replied angrily.
“Yes Liz, you made a mistake, getting pregnant at 16 was certainly a mistake and a big one at that. You had so much to live for, and now look at you.” Nancy snapped back.
“Yes, look at me now. I have a wonderful little girl, who is more perfect than I could ever hope for. I’m in the last semester of my Micro Biology Degree, and I have my own house. Not bad for someone who does waitressing at their parent’s diner is it?” Liz whipped back.
“We don’t mean it like that Liz, we’re just disappointed for you.” Her father said.
“Well get over being disappointed for me, ‘cause I wouldn’t change my life one bit. Now either you accept that or I don’t want to know you, I can’t keep trying to make it up to you, keep trying to please you. I can’t do it, I can’t turn back the clock and make it different. Accept me or forget me.” Liz replied sharply, giving her parents an ultimatum. She was so upset that even after everything she had been through with Ellie over the previous week, her parents still harboured on the one mistake in her life she had made. Seeing the stunned looks on her parents’ faces, Liz couldn’t cope, and decided to walk away and make sure Ellie was ok.

As he watched her walk away, Max could see Liz begin to wobble slightly. Dashing over to her side, he caught her up in his arms as she began to fall.
“Liz, you ok?” He asked worriedly.
“Yeah, just feel a bit faint.” She replied with her eyes closed as Max helped her to a nearby seat.
“Liz?” Maria called rushing over to her friend.
“You look awful, are you sure you’re ok.” He asked crouching down in front of her
“Max is right you know.” Michael added
“Thanks! I’ll be ok, honestly. Just give me some space and a few moments to get my head back to normal.” She said, laying her head on Max’s shoulder to try and stop it spinning around. She didn’t know why she had felt faint, a few moments before she had been fine, and she never normally felt dizzy. Once the faintness had passed, Liz lifted her head.
“I guess my parents words affected me more than I thought.” She replied trying to smile.
“I guess so.” He replied unconvinced.
“Here drink this, it’ll make you feel better.” Isabelle said handing Liz a glass of soda. As the cold drink trickled down her throat, Liz started to feel better and the colour in her cheeks slowly started to return.
“I think you need to slow down Liz, or you’ll make yourself ill.” Max said sternly.
“I’m ok Max, it’s probably because I haven’t eaten much today.” She replied.
“I can fix that.” Alex said, handing Liz a plate with a hamburger from the barbecue on it.
“Now eat.” Max said watching as she picked up the burger and took her first small bite.
“Look guys, drama over, you can all go back to doing whatever you were doing.” Liz ordered.

“Is Liz ok?” Jeff Parker asked as Max walked over to their group.
“I think she’s ok, she’s had a lot to cope with over the last couple of weeks.” Max replied.
“She doesn’t look very well, she’s lost weight too.” He added.
“Having your child really sick in hospital often does that. She did spend three days and nights by Ellie’s bedside willing her to wake up. It’s no wonder she looks ill.”
“Was Ellie really that sick?” Nancy asked.
“Yes she was, it was touch and go for a while there. The doctors just didn’t know if or when she’d wake up.” Max replied, trying not to think about what could have happened.
“We should have been there for her Nancy, no matter what mistakes she’s made, she still needs us.” Jeff said mellowing somewhat in his views of his daughter.
“Are you saying we should forgive her for ruining her life?” Nancy asked.
“I’m saying maybe we should forgive and forget. The first time in her life she needed us and we failed her Nancy, I want to mend the bridge before it’s too late.” Jeff replied, watching Liz hug Ellie.
“I don’t know, it’s hard to forget.”
“It would mean an awful lot to Liz, to know you’re on her side again.” Max added.
“And you, are you going to stay around this time, or drop her like before.” Nancy accused.
“There are a lot of things you don’t know about Liz and I, and I’m not about to go into them. But to answer your question, yes I am going to stay around, I love your daughter and want to spend the rest of my life with her.” Max replied sincerely. “I think maybe you should go and talk to Liz, and tell her what you’ve decided.” Max added.
“Ok.” Jeff replied getting up and taking his wife over to their daughter. From a distance, Max could see the look on Liz’s face. It went from being angry, to being cautious to eventually being very relieved and happy. He knew that her parents had finally forgiven her and maybe they could all get their lives back together.

Heal me – By Ronan Keating

Heal me, steal me, feel me, heal me

When things don’t turn out right
And it feels like you’ve lost the fight
When things don’t work out quite the way
Friend you can look my way

Oh let’s start thinking with our hearts
Then this world, can make a new start, start

Why won’t you, heal me
Love won’t you, steal me
Into the night, feel me
I believe, I believe, I believe
Heal me

It there’s been a change of plans
Someone let go of your hand
When things ain’t looking quite the way
You’ve got a place to stay

Oh let’s start thinking with our hearts
Then this world, can make a new start, start

Why won’t you, heal me
Love won’t you, steal me
Into the night, feel me
I believe, I believe, I believe
Heal me

And there ain’t no reason for us to lose our faith in this world
If only us people on earth can just change the love will unfurl

Heal me
Love won’t you, steal me
Into the night, feel me
I believe, I believe, I believe
Heal me

If they stole your rights
And you’re lost in the night
When skies don’t look bright
My friend don’t lose sight
When you just cannot fight no more
That’s when I need you
That’s when I really need you
That’s when I need you to call me

Part 8

“So Maria, how’s the morning sickness been?” Liz enquired as they sat down at a table for lunch. They were out shopping at the mall, looking for things for Maria’s baby which was due in five months time.
“I’m fine, really good. I can’t believe how calm Michael is though, I’ve got five months to go and already I’m panicking.” Maria said as the waiter came over to take their order.
“Two ham salads and two iced teas.” Liz ordered for them. “You’ll be fine ‘ria.” Liz insisted.
“It’s ok for you, you’re not going through it again are you!” Maria joked. The downward cast of Liz’s eyes didn’t go unnoticed by her friend. “You ok Liz?”
“Yeah I’m fine. Now, what do you want to get today?” Liz asked changing the subject.
“Some clothes, erm booties definitely, I love them they’re sooo cute. Maybe have a look at cribs and buggies if that’s ok.”
“Sure, of course it is.” Liz replied as the waiter came back with their drinks.
“So what’s it like to have Max living with you?” Maria asked.
“Strange at first, but it’s been a month now and he’s part of the furniture. I love it really though, he works too hard, but then that’s him all over, takes after his father, neither of them know how to delegate! Ellie gets way too excited still when he comes home each day though. She loves the fact she can crawl into bed and snuggle up with both of us instead of just me!”
“Oh I bet that reeks havoc on your sex life!” Maria joked.
“Didn’t someone tell you ‘ria, when you have kids your love life goes out the window.” Liz said keeping a straight face.
“I really hope you’re joking.” Maria replied worriedly.
“Mmm, I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.” Liz replied smiling as the waiter returned with their food.

After the hectic shopping trip, in which Maria seemed to buy out the entire baby store, Liz collected Ellie from Elementary school and headed home. As she peeled potatoes for dinner, Liz heard the front door open.
“Hi babe.” A husky voice said, encircling his arms around her waist.
“Hi. You’re home early; I wasn’t expecting you for well over an hour. If I’d of known I would have started dinner earlier.” She said putting the peeler down, turning to face him and putting her arms around his neck.
“The case finished early and I wanted to surprise you.” He replied rubbing his nose against hers. As he gazed into her eyes, their lips brushed against each other.
“Mmm, I missed you.” He murmured against her lips.
“Maybe I can show you what you missed.” She replied seductively. Feeling the undercurrent of sexual tension in the room, Max tilted his head and nudged at her lips with his tongue to encourage her to grant him access.
Just as Max started to deepen the kiss, a little voice called out.
“Daddy!” Ellie screeched, running into the kitchen.
“Hello sweetie, have you been a good girl for mummy today?” He asked, reluctantly breaking the kiss and lifting her into his arms.
“Yes. I even sat quietly in the car after mummy picked me up from school, ‘cause she wasn’t feeling well.” She replied innocently.
“Ellie!” Liz scolded, throwing an angry stare at her daughter.
“You ok Liz?” Max asked, the concern in his voice very evident.
“I’m fine Max, I just had a bit of a headache. Ellie wasn’t supposed to say anything. What happened to our deal pal?” She asked before going back to the potato peeling.
“Why don’t you go and play outside for a few minutes, I’ll come out in a while.” He said, setting Ellie down on the floor before she bolted outside.
“You sure you’re ok Liz, I could finish dinner if you want to lie down.” He offered.
“I’m fine, really Max. It was nothing.” She replied.
“You would tell me if something was wrong wouldn’t you Liz?”
“Yes, now will you please leave me to finish this or you won’t be eating till midnight tonight.” She insisted brushing the conversation aside.
“Ok.” He replied admitting defeat and heading outside to find Ellie. He didn’t know what it was but he knew something was wrong with Liz. Yet if she wouldn’t tell him there was very little he could do.

Watching Max and Ellie playing through the kitchen window, she couldn’t help but smile. It was as if Max had always been with them, always a big part of their lives. Ellie had adjusted to Max moving in very easily, better than Liz could have hoped. As she watched Max swing Ellie over his shoulder, and the little girl roar with laughter, Liz realised it wasn’t just Ellie who had adjusted quickly. For the previous five years, she had struggled to bring up her daughter on her own, taking only the bare minimum from Max. Inside a month he had become her lover once again, left Tess, and moved in with them. It was all a bit overwhelming really, in all the nights she cried herself to sleep, she never once believed she would get him back, trying hard to forget how wonderful he was. Yet now it was as if he had never been away, all the pain of the previous five years wiped into obscurity inside four weeks. A warm glow spread inside her as she continued to prepare dinner, as she thought that life couldn’t get much better than it was that day.

“Mum are you sure you don’t mind looking after Ellie.” Liz said, as they stood in the Crashdown.
“Of course not, like I said Liz, it will give us a chance to get to know my granddaughter better.” Nancy replied stroking the little girl’s hair.
“Now you be a good girl tonight, and daddy and I will see you tomorrow.” Liz said, kissing her daughter goodbye.
“You will come back won’t you.” Ellie said worriedly.
“Of course we will sweetheart. I promise we’ll pick you up tomorrow morning, ok?”
“Ok.” She reluctantly replied.
“Bye sweetie, have fun with grandma.” Max added hugging Ellie before they headed out of the Crashdown.
“She will be ok won’t she?” Liz asked as she climbed into the jeep.
“I’m sure she’ll be fine, don’t worry.” Max replied starting the engine. They were off for a night out with Michael, Maria, Alex and Isabelle, but Liz couldn’t help worrying about Ellie. It was the first time Liz had left her over night with anyone, even Max, and although she totally trusted her parents, she worried about Ellie.
“You’ve got to stop worrying Liz, otherwise you won’t enjoy tonight.” Max said, rubbing Liz’s arm to reassure her.
“I know, once we’re with the others I’ll be fine.” She replied.

“Liz, it’s so good to see you.” Maria said hugging her friend.
“Maria, it’s only been a couple of days.” Liz replied smiling. “And you’re looking radiant.” She added looking at her friend. It was true, pregnancy definitely agreed with Maria. She was five months pregnant, her ‘bump’ was getting bigger and she positively glowed.
“Mmm, not sure I agree with you, I’m feeling a bit like a beached whale at the moment.” Maria replied.
“I keep telling her she looks wonderful, but she won’t listen to me.” Michael added.
“Yeah, but why am I so big already, I’m not supposed to look like this until at least seven months. You hardly showed Liz.” Maria piped up.
“I guess I was lucky ‘ria. You know though, now I think about it you are quite big, maybe it’s twins!” Liz joked.
“Don’t even go there Liz!” Maria replied sharply. “One at a time is quite enough for me!” She added.
“One at a time is way too much for me though.” Isabelle said, her face turning a slightly green colour.
“You ok Is?” Max asked seeing the change in his sister’s face.
“Yeah, just all this baby talk makes me ill.” She replied taking a mouthful of water. Max and Alex exchanged a silent look, with Max trying to work out what was going on.
“Anything you want to tell us Is?” Max probed.
“No Max, should there be?” Isabelle countered
“No, no, just a concerned brother wanting to make sure his sister was ok.” Max replied backing down. It was obvious if something was wrong with Isabelle she wasn’t about to tell him. Instead, he decided to make a mental note to quiz Alex when they were alone.
“So, have you started decorating the nursery yet?” Liz asked.
“Now you come to mention it, I was hoping Michael might start it this weekend.” Maria said nudging Michael in the rib’s.
“Oww, Ok Maria, I get the hint. God I’m gonna be black and blue by the time she has this kid.” Michael joked to Max.
“Hey, don’t forget who put me like this. You deserve some abuse for that!” Maria said looking at Michael.
“Yeah, yeah, I know it’s all my fault and you’re hating every moment of it!” Michael replied conceding defeat, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close to him.

After ordering dinner, Isabelle excused herself to go to the ladies. After some prompting from Max, Liz and Maria followed her.
“Ok Alex, what’s the deal with Isabelle.” Max said as soon as his sister was out of earshot.
“I’m not sure, I’ve tried to talk to her but she says it’s just a stomach bug.”
“Isabelle’s never had a stomach bug in her life Alex, we don’t get sick remember.” Max countered.
“That’s what I said, but she says it’s nothing.” Alex replied.
“So why don’t you believe her?” Max inquired.
“Oh I guess the fact that she’s thrown up four mornings out of five this week, might have something to do with it.” Alex replied allowing a faint smile cross his face.
“You think she’s pregnant?” Michael said suddenly working out where the conversation was leading.
“Well what other possibility is there? My problem is when I breach the subject with her she gets all defensive and shuts me out. I know her feelings on children, and she definitely knows mine, but she won’t even consider the possibility that she could be.” Alex replied sighing.
“Maybe the girls can persuade her.” Max replied taking a mouthful of his wine.

“You know you didn’t have to come with me, I’m a big girl now and I can just about use the ladies without someone holding my hand.” Isabelle snapped as she washed her hands.
“We know that Is, we’re just worried about you.” Liz replied concerned.
“There’s no need, I’m fine.”
“Yeah we can see that, that’s why at the mere mention of babies you turn green.” Maria said.
“It’s just children make me ill.” Isabelle replied keeping up her ice princess facade and not making much sense.
“Children in general, or your children, or perhaps child?” Liz probed.
“I don’t follow.” Isabelle replied slightly confused.
“Ok, I’ll be blunt, are you pregnant Isabelle?” Liz asked.
“No!” Isabelle snapped, then paused for a moment, “Well ok, I don’t think so …… well maybe …….. ok yeah I think I could be.” She conceded as tears welled in her eyes.
“Oh Is, it’s ok.” Liz replied hugging her friend.
“Oh god Liz, what do I do. I know how much Alex wants children, but I don’t know about me, I don’t know if I’m ready to be a mother.” She sobbed.
“If I told you that was a natural reaction, would it make you feel any better?” Liz replied.
“Huh?”
“I felt exactly the same way when I found out I was expecting Ellie. Ok I was 16, but that aside I didn’t feel I would be able to cope with a child, someone who would need 24 hour supervision and depend on me for everything. It’s a huge responsibility Is, but the rewards are amazing. Ellie has got me through the tough times; her smile makes it worth getting out of bed each day. Children give you unconditional love, and make your life complete. Don’t look at it as the end of your life, look at it as the start of your new life, yours and Alex’s. Your love for Alex made this baby, and you’re love will help it grow into a person.” Liz replied looking at Isabelle’s tear drenched face.
“But what do I say to Alex.”
“Are you kidding? Alex will be over the moon, how could you doubt him.” Maria replied offering Isabelle a tissue.
“Oh I don’t know, I guess I’m just being irrational.” She replied drying her tears.
“That settles it then, you’re definitely pregnant, being irrational is totally expected, for nine months at least!” Maria replied as both Isabelle and Liz giggled.
“Poor Michael, I don’t even wanna think about the hell you must be putting him through.” Isabelle replied.
“Hey this is his doing remember.” Maria whipped back pointing at her bump.
“Oh of course ‘ria, and you had nothing to do with it!” Liz replied as they headed back to the table.

“You ok?” Alex asked softly, taking hold of her hand as they sat down.
“Yeah, we’ll talk later I promise.” She replied quietly as their starters were served by the waiter. The six friends chatted throughout the evening, catching up on the general gossip of Roswell. By the end of the evening, Isabelle felt a lot better.
“Take care sis, you know where I am if you need me.” Max said hugging his sister.
“Thanks Max, don’t worry about me I’m fine. I’m sure Liz will fill you in later.” Isabelle replied.
“Call me Is, we’ll have to go out for lunch soon.” Liz added hugging her.
“Yeah, that would be nice, I might need someone to talk to, someone to help me through this.” Isabelle said quietly.
“I’m always here.” Liz replied.

As they drove home, Max proceeded to quiz Liz.
“So, what’s going on with Is? Is she, you know, expecting?” Max asked.
“Yeah, I think she is. She was really stressing over it, I don’t think she’d even admitted it to herself until ‘ria and I talked to her tonight, but I think she’s gonna be ok.” Liz replied.
“Course she’ll be ok, she’s got lots of friends to help her. You’re an old hand when it comes to kids now.” Max joked.
“Thanks, you make me feel like an old woman!” She replied gently punching his arm as he pulled up in their driveway.
“Oh I’m sorry!” He replied unconvincingly as he pulled her into his arms. They sat together entwined in each other’s arms for a few minutes, with just the quiet sound of soft music on the radio.
“Max.” Liz said not lifting her head from his chest.
“Mmm.” He replied with his eyes closed and chin resting on her head.
“Do you ever think about having more children?” She asked nonchalantly.
“Huh? Where did this come from?” He asked opening his eyes and looking down at her in surprise.
“It’s nothing, just a question.” Liz replied, not meeting his gaze.
“Ok.” He said pausing for a second to think of his answer. “I’d be lying if I said I’d considered having more yet. I love Ellie to bits, but another baby would be a big handful, and Ellie’s enough of that already. I think I’m happy as we are, if that’s ok?” He replied kissing the top of her head.
“Yeah, ‘course it is, I was just curious, nothing more.” She said breaking free of his arms and climbing out of the jeep.

He noticed how quickly she broke away from his grasp after their conversation. Was something going on there? Shaking his head and putting it down to ‘women’s things’, Max followed Liz into the house, looking forward to spending a quality night together without a certain little interruption.

When the World was mine – By Ronan Keating

It never rained, the sun was always shinning
Every traffic light was always green
There was time when every door was open
The universe was mine, or so it seemed

Every roll was seven or eight
That it would ever end never crossed my mind
I was flying higher than the heavens
Back when the world was mine

Sometimes man can’t see
When he has it all
Take a look at me
Oh, how the mighty fall
Once I ruled the earth
Once upon a time
When I had your love
That’s when the world was mine

On the changes I’d make if I had the power
How could I have so much and be so blind
But at least for a bight and shining moment
I had you, and the world was mine.
Sometimes man can’t see
When he has it all
Take a look at me
Oh, how the mighty fall
Once I ruled the earth
Once upon a time
When I had your love
That’s when the world was mine

Once I ruled the earth
Once upon a time
When I had your love
That’s when the world was mine
When I had your love
That’s when the world was mine

Part 9

“Oh god, please say it isn’t true.” Liz whispered to herself, squeezing her eyes shut. As she sat on the edge of the bath, she stretched out a shaky hand towards a white implement on the bathroom counter. Taking several deep breaths, she picked the object up and stared back at it.
“No!” She cried to herself as tears drenched her face. In the space of two minutes Liz felt like her whole world had come crashing down around her.
“But it can’t be, it was just once.” She said to herself looking back at the object for confirmation once again. As she stared at it, she tried to take in what it meant.
“How am I going to tell Max?” She asked herself before sinking down on the floor, dragging her knees up to her chest and pouring her heart out through her tears.

“Hello.” A voice on the telephone said.
“Maria, it’s Liz, can I see you?” Liz asked trying calm her voice.
“Sure, ‘course you can Liz, you ok?” Maria asked, sensing something in her friend’s voice.
“I’ll explain later, is now ok?”
“Sure, come straight over.” Maria replied before the connection was severed. Liz definitely sounded strange on the phone, her voice quavering like she’d been crying. She didn’t know what was going on, but hoped Liz would get there soon so that her overactive imagination wouldn’t go into hyperdrive!

Ten minutes later, the doorbell of Maria and Michael’s apartment rang.
“Hi, come in.” Maria said, ushering her friend inside.
“Thanks ‘ria, I hope I’m not interrupting you from something.” Liz replied quietly.
“No of course not, don’t be so silly Liz. I’ve always got time for you. Do you want a drink or something?” Maria offered.
“Juice would be great.” Liz replied sitting down at the kitchen table. As she watched Maria pad around her kitchen with her ever growing stomach, Liz was powerless to stop the tears welling in her eyes.
“Right, juice. Now talk to me Liz, tell me what’s wrong?” Maria asked sitting down next to her friend and looking at Liz. “Oh Liz, what is it?” Maria added seeing two tears tumble down her face. Realising that Liz was unable to speak at that moment, Maria did the only thing a best friend could in that situation, she threw her arms around her sobbing friend and held her tightly.

After a few minutes, Liz managed to regain her composure and lifted her head from Maria’s now tear soaked shoulder.
“Oh god Maria, everything is such a mess.” She said sadly.
“What is Liz? I don’t understand. Tell me, maybe I can help.”
“There isn’t anything you can do, but thank you for the offer. You see, I’m ……. Oh god I don’t think I can even say it. When I do it will mean it’s true.” Liz replied.
“Say what? Please Liz, it can’t be that bad.”
“I’m ………. I’m pregnant.” She whispered, as tears sprung into her eyes once more.
“Oh Liz that’s wonderful.” Maria said happily.
“No it’s not, don’t you understand this changes everything.” Liz replied sadly.
“I don’t follow.”
“You remember at the barbecue we had for Ellie, when you told everyone you were pregnant. Both you and Michael asked when we’d be next, and Max nearly ran a mile. Then, when we went out for dinner, the six of us last week, well I had suspected I could be, and with Isabelle and everything, I breached the subject with Max. We sat in the jeep when we got home and I asked him if he wanted more children. He went quiet for a while, then said he wasn’t ready for more, and just wanted Ellie. So you see, everything is such a mess now.” Liz replied.
“Oh Liz, I’m sure Max will be ecstatic when you tell him. When you asked him in the jeep, it was just a hypothetical question, but if you’d of told him you thought you might be pregnant, then I know his answer would have been different.” Maria said, trying to lift her friend’s spirits.
“But how do you know ‘ria, what if he doesn’t want any more? What if, because I’m pregnant again, he wants to leave me? I can’t go through that again, I just can’t.” She replied weeping openly again.
“You’ve got to tell him Liz, you need to know one way or another. How far along do you think you are?”
“About 2 months. I think it happened the first time, after Ellie had woken up at the hospital, and you stayed with her so we could get some rest. Neither of us were thinking straight, and to be honest being careful was the last thing on my mind. I didn’t think much about it afterwards, I mean it was only once. You’d think I’d of learned by now, it takes only once, that’s what happened with Ellie. God how could I have been so stupid.” She said scolding herself
“Don’t be so hard on yourself Liz, Max has to take some responsibility too.” Maria countered.
“I know, but I can’t help blaming myself.”
“Well don’t. You have to tell him Liz, you must. Promise me you’ll go home and tell him tonight.”
“I don’t know ‘ria ………”
“Promise me Liz! You will only make yourself ill with worry otherwise, and that’s not good for the baby.” Maria replied sternly.
“Ok, I promise to try to tell him. He’s been working late this week on a really important case, if he comes home really tired then I won’t say anything. I’ll wait until the right moment.”
“There will never be a right moment and you know it. Please tell him Liz, I’m sure he won’t react like you think he will.” Maria insisted.
“I should go, I’ve taken up way too much of your time, and you’re supposed to be taking it easy. Michael will kill me if he thinks I’ve been worrying you!”
“Michael wouldn’t dare right now, I’d snap his head off! You didn’t tell me that being pregnant made you irate at the slightest thing. He’s gonna be so grateful once this is over, I don’t know how many more bruises he can take!” Maria joked.
“You two love it really.” Liz replied smiling as she got up.
“Remember what I said Liz, and you know where I am if you need to talk some more.” Maria said hugging her friend.
“Thanks, you’re a good friend ‘ria.” Liz replied before heading out into the afternoon sunshine.

After picking Ellie up from school, Liz headed home. She was feeling really ill by the time they got there, and the first thing she did was head to the bathroom. It seemed to Liz that now she had finally admitted she was pregnant, morning sickness was attacking her body with venom.
“Morning sickness, it’s 3.30pm in the afternoon, I shouldn’t be getting it now!” She complained to herself as she laid out on her bed.
“Mummy, are you ok?” Ellie asked, climbing onto the bed.
“Yeah sweetie, I’m fine. Mummy just doesn’t feel too good right now.” Liz replied with her eyes shut.
“Maybe I can help, maybe I can make the pain go away.” Ellie offered as she started to place her hand on Liz’s head.
“No Ellie, I’m fine, I just need to rest for a moment.” Liz replied quickly. The last thing she needed was Ellie to connect with her and find out about the baby. Five year olds weren’t known for keeping secrets, or being tactful, and Liz didn’t want Ellie to blurt the news out to Max before she had a chance to tell him.
“Are you sure mummy?”
“Yes I’m sure sweetie, the best thing you can do for mummy, is play quietly in your room. I’ll be feeling better soon I promise.” Liz replied closing her eyes once more. A few seconds later, Liz felt Ellie slip away from her side and walk quietly out of the room.

“Hello sweetie, where’s mummy?” Max asked walking into the lounge when he got home from work.
“She’s sleeping.” She said, turning her head from where she sat on the floor.
“Sleeping?” Max replied confused, as he sat down.
“Yes, mummy’s not well.” She replied getting up and climbing onto his lap
“What’s wrong with her Ellie?” Max asked, stroking his daughter’s long silky brown hair.
“I don’t know. She was sick, then she laid down and fell asleep.”
“How long has she been asleep?”
“Erm, I don’t know, I think the big hand was on 12, and the little hand was on erm … 4. Yeah that’s right”
“Wow, that was over two hours ago. You’ve been quiet for all that time?” He asked touching her nose with the pad of his finger.
“Yeap. Mummy said I had to.” She replied proudly.
“Ok, well you keep playing quietly, and I’ll check on mummy.” He said getting up and heading upstairs.

As he pushed open the bedroom door, Max saw Liz sprawled out on the bed. Her hair was fanned out over the pillow and her arm resting over her eyes to block out the light. She looked so peaceful sleeping, he didn’t want to wake her up, but he desperately wanted to make sure she was ok. Just as he had decided to leave her for a while longer, she stirred and slowly moved her arm.
“Max!” She said startled.
“Hi. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you, I just wanted to make sure you’re ok.” He replied moving to kneel down beside the bed.
“What time is it?” She asked weakly.
“It’s just after 6.30pm.” He replied.
“Oh no, I didn’t mean to sleep that long, I haven’t even started dinner.” She said starting to get up.
“Relax, it’s ok, we can get takeaway. I’m worried about you though, Ellie said you were ill when you got home this afternoon.” He said stroking her forehead.
“Yeah, it’s just a stomach bug I think.” She replied turning her head away so Max wouldn’t be able to read the lie in her eyes.
“You sure Liz?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine soon. You sure you don’t mind takeaway, I could go and start something now.” She offered.
“No, you stay here, you still look really pale and I don’t want you to pass out on me or anything. I’ll order pizza and you can come down when it arrives if you’re feeling better.” He replied kissing her lips gently.
“Thanks Max.” She replied quietly before he walked out of the room. As she rested her head back down on the pillow, Liz wished she’d had the courage to tell Max the truth. She knew Maria was right, he needed to know, but she just couldn’t tell him yet.

“Right Ellie, how does pizza sound for tonight?” He asked taking the menu down from the pin board in the kitchen.
“Yay, pizza, my favourite!” She squealed.
“Ok, which one do you want?”
“Pineapple! I want pineapple on it.” She replied excitedly.
“Ok, a Hawaiian it is then. Now, you set the table and I’ll order the pizza.” Max said heading out to the hall to the telephone. “Just be careful with the ……… glasses.” He called back just as the sound of shattering glass vibrated through the house.
“Ellie, you ok?” He asked, rushing back into the kitchen.
“Yes, I’m sorry. It was all slippery.” She said close to tears.
“It’s ok baby, it was an accident, don’t worry about it. Now you sit here for a minute while I order the pizza, then I’ll clear up the glass. Don’t move though, because I don’t want you cutting yourself.” He replied hugging the little girl before placing her on one of the kitchen chairs away from the broken glass.

Twenty minutes later, all remains of the glass had been cleared up, the table laid and the piping hot pizza delivered.
“You sure you should be down here Liz, I could have brought the pizza up to you.” Max said as she walked into the kitchen.
“No I’m fine Max, I’m feeling a lot better actually.” She replied sitting down.
“Mmm, well you still look a bit pale.” He added, placing a piece of pizza with extra pineapple on Ellie’s plate.
“I’ll look better once I’ve eaten something.” She replied helping herself to the pizza.
“When was the last time you ate something?” He enquired.
“I had some toast this morning, but I wasn’t feeling too good at lunch time so I didn’t eat anything.” She replied honestly.
“Well that probably doesn’t help. You’ve got to eat something Liz, or you really will make yourself ill.” He replied sternly.
“Yes doctor.” She replied seriously as Ellie giggled.
“Hey, I though you were on my side.” Max complained looking at his little girl.
“We’re both on your side Max. I know you’re right I should have eaten something earlier. I promise to try to make sure I eat regular meals from now on.” Liz replied with pleading eyes.
“Ok, I’ll let it slip this time, but don’t let it happen again.” He replied sternly, before being unable to hold back on the smile that spread across his face. Liz laughing and joking was a good sign, he though, it must mean she’s feeling better.

That night, as they cuddled up in bed, Liz tried to tell Max her secret.
“I went to see Maria earlier today, she’s looking really well. I’m still convinced she’s expecting twins though.” Liz giggled.
“Yeah poor Michael, he won’t know what’s hit him, especially if they have Maria’s tendency to beat him up.”
“How’s Isabelle, I meant to call her today but didn’t get round to it.”
“She’s fine, adjusting well. I think she’s struggling with the morning sickness thing though, she isn’t used to feeling so ill. Alex can’t stop grinning though, every time I have problems with my computer and he comes to fix it, the grin is permanently glued to his face. It’s pretty sickening really.” Max replied.
“I’m so glad she’s ok, it’s a pretty big something to get used to.” Liz replied.
“Yeah, all these babies that’ll be here soon. I don’t mind admitting I’m happy Ellie’s past the baby stage. No dirty nappies, bottles or sleepless nights, no, I think we’ll leave the babies to our friends.” He replied kissing her neck. Her insides had turned to jelly as Max finished his sentence. She was now positive he wouldn’t want the child she was carrying. “Oh god, now what do I do?” She thought to herself.
“Mmm, if you’re feeling better, we could always practice though.” He whispered seductively.
“Actually, I’m not feeling too good now, I think that pizza didn’t agree with me.” Liz said breaking free of his grasp, jumping out of bed and heading for the bathroom.

She made it to the bathroom just in time before she threw up. Tears stung her cheeks as she sat back on the floor beside the toilet. She knew it wasn’t necessarily the so-called “morning sickness” that had caused her to throw up, but more likely Max’s words. She had worked herself into a state all day, and he just seemed to confirm her fears, as the words had fallen out of his mouth, her stomach had started to churn.

“Liz, you ok?” He asked standing in the doorway. He had been lying in bed listening to her retch until he could stand it no longer and had to make sure she was all right.
“Yeah, I’ll be ok, just give me a few moments.” She replied weakly.
“Maybe you should go and see a doctor, you can’t keep being sick all the time.” He said sitting down beside her and pulling her gently into his arms. As she laid there, Liz took in deep breaths to calm the churning in her stomach.
“No really Max, I’ll be fine.” She said trying to brush him off.
“Please Liz, for me. I want to make sure you’re ok.” He replied, wiping away her tears with his finger.
“Ok, I’ll go, but he’ll probably only say it’s a stomach bug.” She replied. It was only a half lie, she knew she would have to go to see her doctor, just to make sure everything was ok with the pregnancy, she could just pretend to Max it was stomach bug.
“Are you ready to go back to bed, or do you still feel sick?” He asked softly.
“No, I think I’m ok now.” She said starting to stand up.
“Hey, let me carry you, you look exhausted.” He replied, sweeping her into his arms before she had a chance to object.

As he laid her in bed, he looked into Liz’s eyes, there was something there, was it fear, he thought. What was Liz afraid of, why wouldn’t she tell him? Holding her tight, he prayed she would tell him whatever it was that was wrong soon.

Stay – by Stephen Gately

So why don’t you
Stay, for a minute
Give me one more try
Stay with me I’m falling apart
Baby won’t you
Stay, for a minute
Please don’t say goodbye
You and me together
Stay in my life

I wanna show you
Every single dream I got inside of my head
I wanna love you
Better than you’re ever known before

You, are my fantasy
You’re everything to me
Can’t watch you walkin’ out my door

A new beginning
And let nothing come between us ever again
And somehow, I will be singin’
Songs you’ve never heard before

Give me a second chance
To build a new romance
That’s all I askin’ for tonight, baby
Comon’ and take my hand
Andy try to understand
You gotta stay in my life oooh

So why don’t you
Stay, for a minute
Give me one more try
Stay with me I’m falling apart
Baby won’t you
Stay, for a minute
Please don’t say goodbye
You and me together
Stay in my life

Part 10

“Hi yah junior, you been good to mummy today?” Michael asked as he placed his hand on Maria’s growing stomach.
“Hey, where’s my hello?” Maria complained.
“Sorry mate, mummy’s getting jealous! Hi babe.” He replied, kissing her cheek.
“Too right I’m getting jealous, I want you all to myself!” She replied turning round, determined to get a proper greeting from her man.

Throwing her arms around his neck, she pulled him as flush to her body as they could get, and moved in to devour his lips.
“Mmm if that’s the sort of greeting I get when you’re jealous, I’ll have to do it more often.” Michael replied when their passionate kiss finally ended.
“Well there’s plenty more where that came from.” She whispered seductively, nibbling on his ear before moving towards his lips once more.
“Sounds promising, let’s forget dinner!” He replied, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards their bedroom. All that could be heard as the bedroom door banged shut was Maria’s giggles at Michael’s impulsiveness.

As they laid in each other’s arms totally spend after making love, Maria turned to Michael.
“Liz came over earlier today, she was in a real state.”
“Why, what happened?” He asked concerned. Ever since Liz and Max had finally got back together, he hadn’t seen either of them so happy, unless he thought back to them at high school that was.
“She’s pregnant.” Maria replied bluntly.
“Oh.” Michael said as the words slowly registered. “But …….. I thought they weren’t gonna have any more for a while.” He replied.
“That’s why she was in a state.”
“What? Did Max yell at her or something?” He knew his friend had no aspirations for more kids, but Max yelling and screaming at Liz? That was a hard picture to form. No matter how much he didn’t want more kids, Michael couldn’t imagine Max turning his back on Liz once again.
“No nothing like that. Liz hadn’t told him. She was just really worried ‘cause he had said he doesn’t want any more, and now it’s too late.”
“She should tell him, I bet Max won’t react the way she thinks.” He replied kissing her forehead. “I mean, look how I reacted when you told me we were gonna have a baby.” He added, moving his hand protectively to her stomach and caressing it gently.
“Yeah you were pretty cool actually.” Maria said, thinking back to when she’d told Michael. “I told Liz to tell Max tonight, and I she said she would. He needs to know, and the longer she leaves it the more worrying she’s gonna do.” Maria replied desperately trying to fight the wave of sleepiness that was washing over her body.
“Well then, she’s probably already told him by now and they’re probably celebrating just like we’ve done!” Michael replied.

The soft snoring from Maria signalled to him that his last sentence hadn’t been heard. Realising the conversation was definitely over, Michael closed his eyes and followed her quickly into a deep sleep.

“Hi babe, are you feeling better this morning?” Max asked as his dozing girlfriend opened her eyes.
“Yeah I think so.” She replied rubbing her eyes to wake up. She still loved waking up beside Max each morning, somehow it always reminded her how lucky she was. Rubbing her fingers over his bare chest, Max lifted her chin and took her lips in a passionate lock. Moaning softy into his mouth, Liz couldn’t help but marvel at what a wonderful kisser he was. His roaming hands ran down the side of her short lacy nightdress, then moved back upwards bringing the material with him to expose her bare stomach. Placing his hand on it, Max drew circles on her skin with the pad of his finger. All thoughts of the baby and what Max might do or say flew out of her mind, all she wanted to do was concentrate on his wonderful touch. Her body was flooded with an amazing feeling, her blood pumping round her body at an thunderous rate. Max was like a drug to her, no matter what she just couldn’t get enough.

Wanting to take control, Liz pushed Max backwards so that he laid on his back, and she moved on top. His hands moved to her bare waist and caressed her skin as she kissed the tort muscles of his chest. Through heavy lidded eyes, Max saw Liz move closer to his face, nibbling at his neck before she reached her destination. The kiss was deep and full of passion, making their need for each other even more greater. As he felt her mouth open slightly, he slipped his tongue inside, wanting her, needing her. Liz too felt the overwhelming desire that ran through them both. The heat in her stomach was up to boiling temperature, and she couldn’t help but rub against him in an attempt to ease her ache. All sane thoughts flew out the window, both totally oblivious of surroundings, only feelings.

Just at that moment, their bedroom door burst open and Ellie flew in.
“Good morning!” She said cheerily, blissfully unaware of what she had just interrupted. Quickly rolling off Max, Liz tried to hide her flushed cheeks from her daughter, as Max tried to cover the pained expression on his face.
“Hi sweetie, why don’t you go downstairs and watch some TV. We’ll be down soon.” Liz said trying to remove the little girl from the room.
“Will you come down too daddy? We can watch cartoons together.” She asked.
“Soon, I’ll come down soon.” Was all Max could reply. Turning her head to look at him, Liz could see Max was struggling to contain himself.
“Go on Sweetie.” Liz encouraged.
“Ok, don’t be long daddy.” Ellie replied before skipping out of the room.
“We’ve really got to get a lock on that door!” Max groaned as he pulled Liz close to him once again. “That or a babysitter for the weekend!” He added kissing her neck.
“Now where were we?” She replied looking into his deep brown eyes and seeing them full of arousal once again.

A little while later, Ellie came back upstairs to find her parents. She was most upset that Max hadn’t come down to watch the cartoons as promised. Pushing open the door quietly, she found her parents wrapped in each other’s arms fast asleep, with contented looks on their faces.
“Hump!” She mumbled before stomping downstairs. Falling in front of the TV once more, Ellie conceded that she’d have to watch the cartoons on her own, but decided she’d definitely make them feel guilty and have to make it up to her.

True to her word, Ellie was anything but helpful when Liz and Max finally rose around 10.30 am.
“You promised!” She complained as they sat down to breakfast.
“I know I did sweetie, but I was really tired, you know daddy’s been working really hard. I’m sorry. We’ll do it next week.” Max replied hoping to pacify the little girl.
“No fair!” Ellie winged.
“Ok, how can I make it up to you?” Max asked as Liz put a large plate of pancakes down on the table.
“Mmm.” She thought as Liz poured maple syrup over Ellie’s pancakes.

The rest of breakfast went past peacefully, as Ellie thought about what Max could do. Liz smiled softly at him, knowing their little girl wasn’t going to let him off easily.

“The zoo, I want to go to the zoo.” She announced as Liz carried the dirty plates to the sink.
“The zoo huh? Wow, you must be really mad at me then.” He replied pulling his daughter onto his lap.
“Yeap, that’s right, I’m really mad.” She replied nodding her head.
“What do you think Liz?” He asked
“Well if that’s what you need to do to make it up to her, then the zoo it is.” Liz replied smiling.
“Yay, we going to the zoo! We’re going to the zoo!” She exclaimed bouncing up and down on Max’s knee.
“Ok, do that as we won’t be going anywhere ‘cause I won’t be able to walk!” Max replied standing Ellie back down on the floor.
“Well if you want to go to the zoo you’d better go and get dressed, you can’t go anywhere dressed like that!” Liz replied looking at Ellie still in her nightdress.
“Ok.” Ellie replied excitedly before running upstairs.
“This could get expensive if we have to make it up to Ellie each time.” Max replied pulling Liz close to him.
“Mmm.” Was all she replied before passionately kissing him.

The trip to the zoo was a great success, Ellie loved every moment of it. For Liz, it helped take her mind off her own problems, and things she needed to discuss with Max. She couldn’t help but feel sad as she watched Ellie and Max feeding one of the animals. She didn’t know what Max would do when he found out about the baby, she knew she’d have to tell him eventually. But she wondered how Ellie would react if Max left them. Would her little girl blame her and the new baby? No matter what Liz thought, Ellie was only five and would never understand. In her heart she just couldn’t muster the courage to tell him. No, she’d wait a few more days, maybe bring the subject up again like before, to see if his views had changed and maybe then tell him. “Yes, right now I don’t want to spoil anything.” She thought to herself. Judgement Day - By Stephen Gately

Save me
Help me please don’t break me, I pray
It’s crazy
My heart’s pounding save me
On judgement day, my day

Someday I know I’ll find a way to say
What makes the world a better place, you say

My mind is telling me to fight for my rights
I’ve learned my lessons done my time
Someone please just save me ………..

Save me
Help me please don’t break me, I pray
It’s crazy
My heart’s pounding save me
On judgement day, my day

Doomsday, I know that I have made mistakes
I’ve paid, please don’t give my soul away
I’m dreaming of freedom I watch from my window inside
My pulse and my breathing is what I am needing for life

You’ve watched me sleepless seen me cry, oh why
Help me my life is on the line
Someone please just save me

Save me
Help me please don’t break me, I pray
It’s crazy
My heart’s pounding save me
On judgement day, my day

Part 11

“Hi Michael, what you doing here?” Max asked as his friend entered his office.
“Just thought I drop by and see how you are, seeing as I was in the neighbourhood and all.” Michael replied sitting down in the chair opposite Max’s desk.
“Well erm ………. thanks.”
“I thought maybe we could go out for lunch or something. I thought maybe you might wanna talk.” Michael said, trying to instigate some sort of reaction from his friend.
“Yeah ok, sure ……. erm talk?” Max said confused as to what Michael was going on about.
“Yeah, talk. Look you should know that I know ok.” Michael confessed.
“You know? Know what Michael?”
“Max, it’s ok, you don’t have to pretend. Maria told me last night.”
“Did she? Told you what?” Max asked, still completely in the dark over what his friend was saying.
“About Liz.”
“What about Liz?” Max said, giving Michael his full attention now. “Michael will you please just stop talk in riddles and cut to the chase.” Max insisted
“You don’t know do you?” Michael asked, suddenly realising he had put his foot in it.
“Know what? What the hell are you talking about?” Max replied, starting to get angry with his friend.
“God I’m sorry Max, I should go.” Michael said standing up and starting to walk out.
“No way Michael, you’re not going anywhere until you tell me what’s going on. If something is wrong with Liz I deserve to know. Now spill it.”
“Please Max, don’t push it, talk to Liz.” He pleaded.
“Ok, now you’re starting to worry me. Is she ok?”
“Just go and see her.” Michael insisted.
“Fine, this better be important.” Max complained, getting up and grabbing his jacket.
“It is mate, believe me.” Michael replied following Max outside.

“Liz babe? It’s me, are you home?” He called as he stepped inside the front door.
“Yeah I’m in the kitchen Max.” She replied as his footsteps got nearer. “What are you doing home, you don’t normally come home for lunch. Do you want something?” She replied smiling. After her bout of morning sickness the other day she had found it a lot easier to control.
“No you’re right, I don’t, and yeah some salad would be great” He said. “I just had an interesting conversation with Michael at the office.” He added.
“Oh yeah, what did he say?” She asked cutting up the tomatoes for the salad.
“Not a lot really, in fact he didn’t make much sense at all.” Max replied, playing it cool to see if Liz would say anything.
“Huh?”
“Well yeah that was my reaction too, you see he thought I knew something, which I obviously don’t. Got anything you want to share with me Liz?” Max asked pointedly.
“What do you mean?” She replied defensively.
“I’m not totally sure really. But you, Michael and Maria know something that he thought I did. He was under the impression it was pretty important information, so, like I said, got anything you want to share with me?” He asked again.

The room went silent for a few minutes, apart from the sound of Liz chopping the tomatoes. She knew exactly what he was getting at, although she guessed Michael hadn’t actually told Max what it was. She was so intent concentrating on how to tell him, she didn’t feel Max get up and encircle her body.
“You keep doing that and we’ll have sliced finger in the salad too.” He said softly, stilling her hand and spinning her round. “Please Liz, what is it.” He added

Her head was dipped, she couldn’t look in his eyes.
“Oh god, what do I tell him?” A voice inside her head shouted.
“Look at me Liz.” He ordered, but she kept her head low. “Please?” He added, but still nothing. In the end, he slipped his finger under her chin and gently lifted her face so that their eyes were level. It was then that he noticed the tears forming in her eyes. She looked so sad and perhaps even frightened.
“Oh god Liz, it can’t be that bad, please just tell me.” He whispered enveloping her in his arms to quell her tears. To Liz, being wrapped up in his arms felt so good and she feared he wouldn’t hold her again like that once she told him her news.

“I guess that depends on how you look at it.” She whispered back.
“Please.” He added once again.
“Ok, I’ve been meaning to tell you for a few days now.” She started pulling away from him slightly. “I don’t know how it happened, ok yeah I do know, but it wasn’t supposed to, god I am so sorry, everything is such a mess ….” She babbled.
“Liz! Just tell me.” He said snapping her back to reality.
“I’m pregnant Max.” She whispered.
“What!” He replied totally surprised.
“I’m so sorry Max, I didn’t do it on purpose, I know how you feel about more children.” She replied, trying to quash the silence that had descended on the room once again.

“How long have you known?” He asked sitting down on a nearby chair.
“About a week, perhaps a bit longer, but I only took a test a few days ago.” She replied.
“Why didn’t you tell me Liz?” He asked softly.
“I tried Max, I really did. I asked you how you felt about more children a couple of times, but each time you replied that you were happy with just Ellie.” She said, as a tear slipped down her face.

As she looked at his non expressional face Liz could suddenly feel him slipping away from her.
“Ok, I answered your question truthfully, I guess through choice I’d wait longer, we’ve only just got back together and it would complicate things having another child.”
“It’s ok, I guess I could not have it.” She whispered, afraid of his answer. In her heart she knew she was as ready now to terminate his baby as she had been at 16. She just couldn’t do it.

“Hey, slow down, I didn’t say anything about not having it.” Max said realising she was misinterpreting his replies. “Ok, let’s start again.” He said taking a deep breath. Stretching out his arm, he caught her hand in his and pulled her towards to him. Standing up, he looked down into her damp eyes and gently kissed her forehead.

“Liz, when I answered your questions, I didn’t know you were already pregnant. Had I of done there is no way I would have said that to you.” He replied.
“But you were just being honest.” She replied sadly.
“Yes I was being honest, but that doesn’t mean my views can’t change. I love you Liz, and no matter what I want to be with you. Ellie is a wonderful child, but I missed out a lot on her growing up, I don’t want that this time.” He said smiling softly.

As he looked into her eyes, Max allowed his hand that was holding her arm to fall away and slowly move to rest on her soon to expand stomach.
“When do you think it happened?” He asked
“By my calculations, the first time. I guess with Ellie being sick and everything we forgot to be careful.” She replied shyly.
“I just assumed you’d be on the pill or something, I mean you didn’t say otherwise.” He replied putting his arms around her.
“I should have, I’m sorry my mind was on other things at the time. I didn’t expect for us to end up like we did that day, and as there has been no one else I’ve slept with since that one time with you, I’ve had no reason to take the pill.” She replied.
“I’m not blaming you Liz, it’s ok. I know we didn’t plan this, but we’ll cope, just like we did with Ellie five years ago. I do have one request though.”
“What’s that?” She asked.
“That you agree to give up working at the Crashdown as soon as possible. Being on your feet all day can’t be good for you or the baby. It isn’t like we need the money Liz, I want to support us both.”
“Ok.” She agreed.
“Oh and another thing.” He said pulling away from her slightly so he could see her face. “I love you so much Liz Parker, and this is something I should have done along time ago, if only you’d let me. Marry me Liz, I want us to be a proper family.”
“Are you proposing to me Max Evans?” She asked playfully.
“Most certainly. Will you?”
“Of course I will.” She replied as tears once again welled in her eyes.

This time though they weren’t tears of sadness, but instead they were tears of immense joy. Never in her dreams did she expect Max to take the news about the baby so well, and for him to propose as well. In her heart she didn’t think the day could get any better.
“Oh and just one more thing.” He said. “I want you to promise me that you’ll never ever worry about telling me anything again, no matter what it is. I love you Liz and there is nothing on this earth that could quell that.” He added, kissing her soft lips.
“I love you too Max.” She mumbled against his lips before he deepened their kiss.

Inside she felt like she’d burst with happiness at any moment. Max knew about the baby and still loved her! Relaxing for the first time since taking the test, Liz allowed herself to melt into the arms of the man she wholeheartedly loved.

It wasn’t long before desire took over and they moved up to their bedroom. Their love making was tender and sweet, feeling the amazing love they both had for each other. As she laid in his arms, Max gently caressed her bare stomach. To him it felt quite strange that there was a little thing that was soon to be a baby growing inside her, something their love had made. In truth, he really did like the thought of another baby. Yes he’d previously wanted just them and Ellie, but Liz carrying his child felt so wonderful to him.

As they drifted into a deep sleep, both thought of how much their lives had changed since the day Max had healed Liz as the Crashdown. So much had happened, running from the Sheriff, Topolski and the FBI, then there was Ellie’s untimely entrance into the world, along with Liz’s insistence that Max follow his destiny. So much change, but with another baby on the way they both knew their lives would change once more.

“A baby?” Ellie squealed
“That’s right sweetie, is that ok?” Liz replied, as her daughter sat between her and Max on the sofa in their lounge.
“Erm, I think so, does that mean I won’t be your baby anymore?”
”Oh Ellie, you’ll always be our baby.” Liz cried, pulling the little girl into her arms.
“Of course you will honey, you’ll just have to be a big sister to the new baby too.”
“Ooh a big sister, that sounds fun! Can I play house with her?”
”Well, not right away sweetie, the baby will be too small, but what if it’s a little boy?” Liz asked.
“A boy! No boys are smelly, I don’t like boys!” Ellie announced.
“Oh well, we’ll just have to wait and see, we’ve got plenty of time.” Max replied, stroking his daughter’s hair.
“When can I see the baby? Will it be here tomorrow?” She asked innocently
“Oh no sweetie, the baby won’t be here for another six months.” Liz said.
“Six months! That’s ages, why can’t we get the baby tomorrow?” She complained
“Because it’s not ready to be here yet.” Max replied.
“But why not daddy?”
”Erm ………..” Max stumbled, not sure how to explain it to a five year old.
“You know when I explained why Aunty Maria is getting bigger sweetie?”
”Yes.”
”Well that’s because the baby is growing inside her. That’s what’s happening to me sweetie, the baby is inside my tummy.” Liz said taking her daughter’s hand and placing it on her stomach.
“But how did it get there?” Ellie asked innocently, her big brown eyes staring up at her moth.
“Ok, this is my exit.” Max said getting up.
“Thanks!” Liz called back. “Ok, well ……………” Liz started.

She had known that as Ellie was such an inquisitive child, her asking about the baby was inevitable, but now the time was upon her, Liz had to think fast as to how to explain it to the child. Max’s exit hadn’t made it easy for Liz, now all the pressure was on her, and Liz made herself a mental note to get back at Max for that one!

Telling her parents was a lot easier this time. Both Nancy and Jeff were thrilled for their only daughter. Since getting to know her granddaughter better, Nancy was constantly amazed by how wonderful the little girl was. How wise in the world she was for a five year old, how much she thrived for knowledge and simply loved being around people. She knew that was as much down to how Liz had brought Ellie up, and Nancy was proud her daughter was doing such a brilliant job as a mother.

“We really are happy for you sweetheart.” Jeff said, hugging his daughter.
“Thank you dad, I really couldn’t be happier than I am right now.”
”Make sure you look after her Max.” Jeff said with warning in his voice.
“Oh I will Mr Parker, she’s not going to do anything even remotely strenuous for the next six months.” Max replied as Liz flashed him an angry stare.
“So, I guess you’ve got a wedding to plan then.” Nancy said
“Yeap, and I could really use your help there. We haven’t got much time and I really don’t know where to start.” Liz confessed, hoping her mother would take up the challenge.
“Well then, I guess we’d better arrange to meet with Diane, weddings take a lot of preparation and I’m sure Diane would love to help.” Nancy replied smiling at the young couple.

Catching her mother’s look of happiness, Liz turned to Max and smiled at him. In return he winked at his soon to be wife. He understood what Liz had just done and couldn’t help but admire her. Liz knew her mother would want to take over their wedding plans, but Liz was totally happy with that. She knew it would be a good mutual bonding experience for mother, daughter and future mother in law, something that was very long overdue.

When you say nothing at all – By Ronan Keat
From the soundtrack of the film Notting Hill

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I can never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing

The smile on your face let’s me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best, when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people taking out loud
But when you hold me you drown out the crowd
Try as they may they can never defy
What’s been said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face let’s me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall
You say it best, when you say nothing at all

You say it best when you say nothing at all
You say it best when you say nothing at all
The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Let’s me know that you need me

PART 12

“Liz sit still for goodness sake, I can’t put this in if you don’t!” Isabelle snapped as Liz fidgeted.
“I’m sorry Isabelle, I can’t help it I’m just so excited.” She replied beaming a huge smile across her face.
“Right, I’m done now.” Isabelle replied standing back and admiring the sparkling gold tiara she had just fixed in Liz’s hair.

As Liz stood up and turned around, both Isabelle and Maria gasped an intake of breath. She look simply stunning. The soft ivory wedding dress look perfect against Liz’s dark hair and tanned skin. The dress was strapless with a full skirt, light pearl beading decorated the tight bodice which was a corset style at the back. The dress was fairly simple, but very Liz, and it had been tweaked in just the right place to hide Liz’s slightly showing stomach. The large gold and diamond sparking tiara set off the dark curls in her hair perfectly, she looked truly amazing.

“Liz darling, the car is ……… here. Oh my ……… sweetheart, you look so beautiful.” Her mother said kissing her daughter gently on the cheek.
“Thanks mum”. She replied softly, glancing at Maria who was quickly wiping away a tear that had escaped.
“We should be going, see you at the church Liz.” Isabelle said kissing her soon to be sister in law before leaving the room.

Both Liz and Maria stood alone in the room, staring at each other as they desperately tried not to cry.
“Liz baby, I know you’ve waited for this day for a long time now. You and Max have been through so much, but true love shines through like a bright beacon at night. You’ve been through the rough and tough times, now it’s time to forget them and enjoy the wonderful life and happiness you deserve. You look perfect Liz, you’re gonna take his breath away!” Maria said hugging her friend.
“I don’t know what to say Maria. You’ve been there for me through everything, all the bad times and a few good times. You’ve picked me up when I was down, fed me ice cream and a shoulder to cry on when I was sad and down. There is no way I would have got to this point in my life without your love and friendship. You’ve never judged me even if you haven’t agreed with my decisions, you’re the best friend I could ever have hoped for” Liz replied.
“Enough already, you’re gonna start me crying again! God you never told me how emotional I’d get now I’m pregnant.” Maria replied laughing through her tears.
“You have to stop ‘Ria, or you’ll start me again and Isabelle will kill me if I ruin my make up.” Liz replied her eyes full of tears that were threatening to spill down her face.

When Liz finally descended down the stairs, the only person in the house to see her was her father. There were no words that Jeff Parker could say when he saw his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time, he was totally speechless. It hit him suddenly that she was no longer his little girl, but a grown woman, about to be married, and with young daughter and another baby on the way, it was almost too much for him to cope with. All he could do to stop his emotions from running away was scoop her up into his arms and hold her tight.
“Oh Lizzie you look wonderful, truly wonderful.” He whispered, his throat tight with emotion.

“You love him very much, don’t you sweetheart?” Jeff asked as they drove to the church.
“Yes daddy, I do. I have never loved anyone apart from Max, he’s my life.” She replied thinking of Max waiting at the alter for her.
“I hope you will be very happy together. Your mother and I love you very much Liz, and no matter what we will always be here for you. I know we’ve had our ups and downs, and yes we’ve clashed over the decisions you’ve made in your life. But never forget Liz, that without a doubt your mother and I are so very proud of you and how strong you are.”
”Thank you daddy, that means so much to me.” Liz replied kissing his cheek before wiping away the tear that had tumbled down her own cheek.

Once the car arrived at its destination, Liz carefully got out of the car. She knew that the next time she took the trip, she would no longer be Elizabeth Parker, but instead Elizabeth Evans, and just the mere thought made her stomach flip inside.

As she stood just outside the church, Isabelle and Maria, her two bridesmaids, fused over the train of her dress, making sure it was just right. Standing beside Liz, looking up in awe at her mother was Ellie, Liz’s flower girl.
“Mummy, you look soooo pretty! Just like a princess from the stories you read me at night time.” Ellie beamed.
“Oh sweetie you are so perfect, do you know that? Promise me you’ll never grow up baby, never loose your innocence, never stop being my baby girl.” Liz replied, as Ellie put her arms around her mother and hugged her as best she could through the wedding dress. Ellie’s words nearly tipped Liz over the edge, as she fought desperately to control her tears once more.

“I promise.” Ellie replied sincerely. It was a promise Liz knew in her heart that Ellie could never keep; it had been the same promise Nancy had asked Liz to make those few years ago before she and Max had disappeared into the desert in search of clues to her visions. Ellie’s growing up was as inevitable as the sun shinning, but at that moment, Liz just wished she could freeze time and not move; everything was way too perfect for her to comprehend.

As the organist started the music, Max, Michael and Alex stood up and waited for the bride to glide down the isle. Having two equally close friends, he hadn’t been able to decide who should be his best man, so Max had chosen both of them. A shiver went down Max’s spine as he heard the congregation jump to their feet, and Liz descended down the isle to meet her soon to be husband.

Ellie walked in front of Liz, taking handfuls of fresh white rose petals from her tiny wicker basket and scattering them on the floor; all the time smiling widely everyone who had come to see her parents marry.

As she drew up beside him, Max turned to face her for the first time, and mouthed I love you to her, before taking her slightly trembling hand in his. For both of them the service was a blur, all they cared about was that their dreams had finally come true that day. For Max, he couldn’t even begin to explain how he was feeling, his love for Liz filled every fibre of his body, overwhelming him totally. Looking at her as they said their vows, he blinked several times to stop tears cascading down his face. She looked so wonderful, so beautifully perfect, his Liz, his one and only love. For Liz, the whole ceremony seemed like a dream, never had she truly thought she would actually get to this point in her life. The point where she exchanged vows and married the only man she’d ever loved in the past, and the only man she would ever love in the future.

The evening reception was held in the Evans’ garden, a marquee had been put up especially and balloons, candles and draped soft ivory material had made it look perfectly romantic.
As they took the floor for the first dance of the night, Max turned to Liz.
“Mrs Evans, do you know that this is the first time I have got you alone all day.” He said as he put his arms around her waist and pulled her close to his body.
“Alone on the dance floor, but not alone in reality, there are still plenty of cameras and eyes pointed at us.” She reminded smiling at him.
“Well it feels like we’re alone right now. Have I told you how amazingly, stunningly fantastic you look tonight?” He said as the music started.

Staring into her deep brown eyes, Max couldn’t resist bending his head and kissing her passionately. As they glided around the dance floor, their love filling the marquee, everyone watching them felt the overwhelming happiness radiating from the couple. Liz felt like she was floating around the dance floor, with Max’s strong arms her only anchor to the ground and reality. She didn’t think she could ever feel more happier than she did at that moment, gazing up into her new husband’s eyes, with the sound of Ronan Keating’s ‘When you say nothing at all’ filling her ears.

“The smile on your face let’s me know that you need me, there’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me. The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me wherever I fall.” Liz sang the song quietly to her husband. The words encapsulated exactly how she was feeling at that moment. She knew they would be together forever, Max would always be there to catch her whenever she fell.
“God Max I love you so much.” She whispered as a single tear rolled down her cheek.
“I love you too Mrs Evans.” He replied softly, catching the solitary tear with his finger and wiping it away. Mrs Evans, that sounded so good to Max, his Liz was now his Liz forever, his wife, mother to his beautiful daughter and unborn child, could life get any better?

As the music slowly died away, Max reluctantly relinquished his grip on his new wife, knowing there were a lot of people who wanted to see her too. For the rest of the evening, Max and Liz mingled with their guests, hardly having time to spend with themselves at all until it was time to end their special day, and head off for their first night as newlyweds.

Before they left though, a special dance was saved for the man who felt like he had lost so much that day. Jeff Parker had held on to his emotions admirably throughout the day, yet although the day was so special, he couldn’t help but feel sadness inside. Only a few hours earlier he had given away his most precious possession, his only daughter. He didn’t doubt that Max cared very deeply for his little girl, but was he worthy enough? Does any father really believe any lad is truly worthy of their daughter’s hand in marriage?

“At last, I get to dance with the prettiest girl in the room.” Jeff said, pulling Liz into his arms as the music of Elton John’s ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ filled the marquee.
“Oh dad thank you, I think you’re a bit biased though.” Liz replied.
“Oh but I’m entitled to, I’ve just given my daughter away today. My little baby doesn’t need me any more.” Jeff said honestly.
“I’ll always need you daddy, always. No I’m not your baby any more, but I’ll always be your daughter.” She replied.

Pulling her closer, Jeff held on tightly to his daughter throughout the remainder of the song. His grasp got stronger as the song neared the finish. To Jeff, the end of the song signified letting Liz go and live her new life with her new husband. Finally relinquishing his grip, Jeff kissed his daughter’s cheek before allowing her to head back to her other guests and away from him.

“She still loves you Jeff.” Nancy said as her crestfallen husband headed over to her.
“I know Nancy, this just seems so final.”
“We knew this day would come along eventually, and she looks so happy.”
“I know, it’s just me being me. I’m so pleased she’s happy at last, she deserves it.”
“I agree.” Nancy replied hugging her husband and thinking back to their wedding day twenty-three years previously.

“So that’s both our children married now.” Philip said, putting his arms around his wife.
“Yeah. I guess our job is done now.” Diane replied, feeling a bit down.
”I’m not so sure, I think it’s just starting again. Our granddaughter is wonderful, and there’ll be more to come very soon. Isabelle, Liz and Maria are going to need your help all over again once their babies are born.” Philip said wisely
”Yeah, I guess I hadn’t thought of that.” Diane said, perking up again as she watched young Ellie blow bubbles at her mother.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get you alone tonight!” Max said as they walked up the stairs to the Bridal Suite of the nearby hotel.
“Well you’ve got me now.” She giggled as he put the key in the lock.
“Ok, now for some tradition.” Max said before sweeping Liz up in his arms.
“What are you doing Max?” She squealed.
“Carrying you over the threshold Mrs Evans.” He replied cheekily.
“Max what are you like! You’re going to break your back carrying me at the moment!” Liz said as Max laid her on the luxury four-poster bed.
“What do you mean, you’ve hardly put any weight on Liz ……..” Max started before he was interrupted by her cries.
”Oh my……….. Max!” Liz exclaimed as she laid back and saw 30 silver and gold metallic heart balloons filled with helium caught in the canopy of the bed.
“Just a little surprise I got for you.” He replied grinning.
“It’s perfect Max, you’re perfect, everything is so perfect! This has without doubt been the best day of my life.” She said looking up into her new husband’s eyes.
“Ditto.” He replied nuzzling her neck. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this day to be so wonderful, and believe me I’ve dreamt about marrying you many times Mrs Liz Evans.”
“Liz Evans, that still sounds really strange …… but I like it.”
”I hope so, ‘cause you’re stuck with it now!” Max joked before bending down and softly kissing her lips.

Back at the evening reception, most of the guests had slowly left, leaving just a few people in the Evans’ garden.
“You ok ‘Ria?” Michael asked, seeing she was rather quiet.
“Yeah, just me being me.” She replied.
“What’s up?” He asked softly, encircling his arms around her waist.
“Nothing.” She said, dipping her head.
“Maria, talk to me. Please.” He insisted. Over the previous few months he’d learnt her mood swings, and when she said nothing was wrong she really meant exactly the opposite.

“Ok, I guess …….. I guess want this too Michael.” She replied honestly.
“What, a wedding? But I thought you wanted to wait until after the baby was born.” He replied confused. “I’ll never understand women!” He thought to himself.
“I did, but I’m not so sure now. Today was great, Liz looked awesome, but I’m not sure if I really want all this. I want just us, and close family and friends to be at our wedding, I want it simple, and …….. I want to get married before the baby is born.” She replied looking up into his eyes.
“You can have whatever you want Pixie, I mean that.” He replied kissing her soft lips.
“God I love you Michael, what on earth did I do to deserve you?” Maria murmured against his lips as two tears trickled down her face.
“I love you too ‘Ria, and I always think that about you. I put you through so much, pushed you away so many times, yet you always came back, never gave up on me. I don’t deserve you Maria, you’re too good for me.” He replied, lifting his hand from her waist and brushing away her tears. “Hey you can’t cry, we’ve got a wedding to plan!” He added, making her smile once more.
“You know what, I never thought it was ever going to be this good. Back in high school when we were running from the FBI and alien hunters I thought that would be a part of my life forever, I never expected anything normal.”
“We’ll always be on our guard Maria, always, being alien does that to you. But we’re human too now, you, Liz and Alex have made us that. This is my life and nothing could make it any more perfect than what it is right now.” Michael replied, dipping his head to kiss her once again.

Sinking into his strong arms, Maria couldn’t stop the tears of happiness tumbling down her cheeks. Over the years she’d managed to crack him. There had been times when she’d thought he’d never accept her, but right then she knew it had all been worth it. As she clung onto her soon to be husband, Maria was grateful she hadn’t given up or walked away from her Spaceboy.

Just as she’d wanted, the following week, Maria and Michael got married, up at the reservoir with her family and friends beside her. Amy was there, shedding many tears for her only daughter as Jim gave Maria away to Michael. Diane and Philip beamed for the second time in a week as their second ‘adopted’ son tied the knot with his high school sweetheart. Alex and Isabelle watched on, proud that they were all married now. For Max and Liz it brought back all the memories of their wedding the previous week.

It was an emotional day, having three pregnant women around made sure of that, but it was everything Maria had wanted and so much more. It was so simple, so relaxed, but it was a dream come true for her. She’d had tough times trying to persuade Michael to open up, let her in, and admit that he need her. There were many of those times when they’d argued and walked away, each too stubborn to admit they were wrong. Without a doubt though, they both knew they couldn’t survive without the other. They brought out the best in each other, they were unable to live without the other. Throughout all the tough times, running from the Sheriff, FBI and so on, not once had their love faltered. They’d fought not only people, but the small matter of Michael’s destiny. Yet for Maria those times seemed a lifetime away as she gazed deep into his spellbinding eyes as they danced their first dance as a married couple.

So much had happened in the previous six months it was sometimes extremely overwhelming. Yet Liz knew in her heart the next six months would also be equally tremendous and certainly challenging, four new babies between the six of them would see to that.
