A man dies at the beginning in LA, police go to investigate it and see a scorch on the car seat. There are no footprints, a lady who was with the guy said there was an other worldly figure. The police find a piece of paper with a lisence plate number in the car. There is a noc on Max's door and there is a policeman there wanting to inquire regarding a homicide investigation. The policeman hands over a photo of the guy who died, Max doesnt recognise him. The name is Joey Ferrini. Michael sees the photo. The policeman says he'll be watching him and leaves. Michael says he's seen the dead guy - he was the guy who told him to tel Max to stop looing for the ship. He deducts that there were two shapeshifters who landed with them and that Nasedo's dead, therefore the guy who illed Joey was the second one. Liz says Max has to contact his son and the shapeshifter may be the only one who nows how. Max says he must go to LA, Liz says let's go, Max says I should go alone and that he will fill her in every step of the way. Joey's death has been put down to a lightening strie.
In class the next day, Liz and Kyle are paired up in a journalistic truth-finding project. Jim Valenti shows up at the classroom door, the nursing home has rung and said there's been an incident with Kyles grandfather and he needs to go and sort it out. Isabel is having lunch with Jesse and he's showing her the engagement ring, but she cant wear it cos it'll announce to the world their relationship. Kyle and Liz are at the nursing home now, and he says that his father has hardly been to see his grandfather at all. Liz starts filming in the nursing home for their documentary. She stops on Kyles grandfather, his room is in a mess and there is food all over him. She inquires if he ever talks to his grandfather, he says there's no point cos its always a one way conversation. She films his calendar which has a black circle on a date. She stops filming and starts reading to the grandfather. He suddenly says 'they are among us', gripping her arm.
Liz rings Max with a theory on the shapeshifters - they can only temporarily change their appearance, they then have to return to a base form. Max is going to the funeral of Joey. A guy who was Joey's friend says he's never seen Max before, Max says he's a distant cousin, the guy tries to set him up as his agent in LA. A woman in the front row turns around and hushes them.
Kyle is showing the receipts for his grandfather's bills - grossly overpriced - to the camera and Jim wals in, spoiling hte scene. Liz wants Kyle to asc Jim about what his grandfather said. Jim gets uncomfortable taling about his father. cyle says the september 24th 2000 is circled on his calendar - the last day Jim went and visited his father. He has always been assuming his father didnt pay any attention to him. Liz finds out 'they are among us' is a movie that was filmed ages ago, Jim's father was heading up an investigation of the lead actress for that film who was killed in a 'lightening strike'
Isabel and her mother have an argument about Max. Her mother is beginning to get jittery about Max not staying in touch. In LA, Max has received a threatening letter in his car windscreen telling him to go home that disintegrates after he's read it. Isabel says she and Michael dissaopprove of his search for shapeshifters - he might expose them. Max sees the agent he met at Joeys funeral. Max says 'he's not an actor' (ironic huh?) but the agent is convinced he can make Max hit the big time in the acting business. Max breaks into a place (Liz rings and says what she's found about the actress who died) he plays a tape labelled 'Utah shoot'. Joey's on it saying 'i got a message for your friend Max....the person i work for.......The computer in the background says 'You've got mail'. He walks past it, it says 'Youve got mail.......Max' this gets his attention. There's another warning note on it for him. The woman from the funeral (the woman from the first scene) appears in the doorway and threatens him with a gun. She says the police are lying and takes Max to the place to show him what happened. She says she saw a glowing man who disappeared. She doesnt now who cast his performance in Utah. Joey 'had the good on someone' and that 'it was gonna make him a rich man'.
Liz and Kyle meet an old woman who did hair and make-up on 'They are among us'. They ask about the actress 'hit by lightening on a clear day'. She got caught up in some love triangle with the lead actor and the clapper loader. Liz calls Max and says if they can find the clapper-loader looked like in 1959, maybe that's what he looks like today. They can find dailys (scene shots) with pics of the clapper-loader in Paramount Pictures. The woman offers Max if he wants to come up to her room. He tells her its important that she forgets about everything, especially him. She tells him that she hopes the 'girl on the phone' nows how lucky she is. Max returns to the agent saying I want to be an actor. I dont have time for headshots. I need an audition now. I want this one at Paramount. Its for Star Trek. Isabel goes out to dinner with their parents and everytime she tries to tell them anything they jump the gun saying 'is it about Max?' Isabel reveals that she and Jesse are engaged and they dont appear to be as thrilled as she does. Kyle expresses to his father that he doesnt want what going on between Jim and his grandfather to happen to them. Jim goes and visits his father for a short visit, as soon as he leaves the room he stops and goes back in to find his father has gotten out of his chair and trying very hard to circle the date on the calendar. He helps him back into the chair and promises that he'll circle it for him and when he comes back tomorrow he'll mark that day too.
In LA, Max does a reading for the people at Paramount (ironic considering in real life he's doing an alien-related show also under paramount). They arent too impressed. Max convinces his agent to let him have a walk around the studio. He breaks into a film vault and uses his powers to project the film reels on the wall. He sees the clapper-guy. It turns out he's seen him at a restaurant - he's a major movie producer in Hollywood. The phone cuts out during his call to Liz and the producer appears out of the shadows saying he killed Joey cos he found out about his shapeshifting. He sets all the film in the room on fire and throws Max up against a wall, he blacks out.
