The four aliens come and inspect the Granolith trying to figure out what it is - planning to return after school and figure it out. At school, Michael is failing his history class. The teacher tells him to go and interview an old war veteran. Michael goes and interviews him, getting short and unhelpful answers, when Michael tries to cooperate, he gets more unehlpful. Hal, or Captain Carver, continues to tell Michael that children today are 'softer than soap' Michael finds that the veteran left the army in '47, the year the UFO crashed. Hal says that he saw the aliens and Michael becomes more interested. Hal says how things were when he was 21yrs old in 1947. He had an army job to please the woman he was with at the time. As he's asleep in his office, he gets a phone call saying there's been a crash and that its not one of theirs.
They went him and a friend out to the site, the place was buzzing with people. (flashback - Max plays the friend, Michael plays the veteran) army officers are collecting something from the crash site. As some officers are loading scrap metal from the crash onto a jeep, he finds a piece of metal that drops from their crate and when he scrunches it up, it unfolds to its original form. A loudmouth reporter (played by Maria) is trying to find out whats happened, without much luck. A new official arrives on scene and directs Hal to drive a car out to a hangar. (flashes to real time, Hal assumes Michael doesnt believe in aliens but wants to. The reunion that the veteran has returned to Roswell for wants him to put on his old army uniform, but everything that he believed the uniform stood for died in '47. He tosses the piece of scrunchy metal to Michael). The two officers start to thinc of what if the crash really was extra-terrestrials. While in the car driving to the hangar, the car starts slowing down by a mysterious force and comes to a stop. They get out and chec in the bac of the vehicle. Inside a large canvas bag, there is something glowing.
In a bar, locals are beginning to think of the entrepreneurial approach their little town can tae towards the 'crash'. The two officers have stopped at the bar for a while. As Hal's friend goes off, Hal meets the reporter whom he saw bac at the site and starts flirting with her. She wants to now what was in their vehicle that they drove off with. He was with a woman at the time - one only for pleasure. He inquires if she wants to hear about his day, she says no, and they start kissing. He glances out the window and sees a figure standing in the shadows. (flashes - Michael is at the Crashdown with Hal, he wants to find out more, pleads for Maria to lend him her car so that he can go to some of Hal's old haunts - Marias unsure because of his recent thing with Courtney. Though does eventually give in)
Hal and the reporter start to chat again. She introduces him to Yvonne, a nurse (Liz) who saw funny things the night of the crash. He returns to his room to find his woman there with another officer. He goes into the high officials office (Jim Valenti) and gets blasted for blabbing to a reporter (inotherwards, slowing down his suspension from flying). He gets rather angry and rings Yvonne. He wants to chat without the reporter around. She's been transferred to London and he goes to meet her that night. She's seen aliens and says that doctors have been doing autopsies. There's a scream and Hal goes to find Yvonne - shes nowhere around. Hal returns to his office and opens some confidential files containing photos of a dead man with a silver hand print on his chest. Hal tries to get into the hangar. His friend is now a guard there, but wont let him in. Hal decides to try and chat with the reporter again. He tells her everything he nows. Of a witnesses account of two glowing figures. (flash - Hal and Michael start chatting about Maria, Michael says its over, Hal says, not from where he was sitting. He says he shouldve stayed with Betty (the reporter). Richie (Hal's friend) has seen that there are alien things in the hangar and is getting boozed up at the bar. Hal says not to worry and that the whole world will now about things by tomorrow and to see the morning paper, he then leaves. Richie wasnt really drunc though, it was a way of getting Hal to say whether he could be trusted. The next morning he saw the paper and the story wasnt in there. He calls Betty but she's not there. He finds a notice in his office saying that he's been honourably discharged from the army. He finds his friend has ratted him out and punches him. It turns out his friend convinced the military to leave him be, and hints that people are being hushed by the army.
In the bar, a message has arrived earlier that day for him from Betty, it has a phone number with a ey attatched. He rings the number and his sister answers saying that Betty died in a car crash earlier on. Hal goes to the hangar that night and uses the ey to open the hallway to the autopsy rooms. In one, he finds the pods that had been in his vehicle and gets photos of them. He sees some doctors, dead on the ground with silver handprints on them. Shadows move behind him and two glowing aliens come from behind a curtain. He senses they want the pods and that they contain their children. He figured it wasnt the humans they wanted, it was the pods. He leaves the room for them to get the pods and switches the fire alarm just when some officals are about to enter the room so that the aliens can getaway. (flash - Michael inquires what was in the sacs. Hal says they appeared to be human foetuses. It was the only time he stuck his neck out to save anything and it all went to hell. Michael decides then to reveal himself and blows up some bottles saying 'you saved me'. Then lights Hal's cigarette with his thumb. He and Hal hug.
At school, Michael apologises for being so rude to Liz earlier on. Liz inquires as to whether Max put him up to the apology, Michael came up with it himself. Michael opens up to Maria and shows her the granolith, saying this is why i havent been returning your calls. He says thankyou.
Michael then reveals that there is another set of pods somewhere. |
