Max and Liz get the urge to do normal teenage things, and take off for a drive along an old highway. Things go wrong however, when Max swerves to miss a stray wild horse, and drives into a ditch. Liz is okay, but Max is unconcious and taken to hospital.
Michael and Isabel rush to the hospital to check on Max just in time to see a nurse drawing blood from him. They realise that a routine blood test could put them all in danger if a discovery is made that Max's cells aren't like a normal human's. They decide to turn to Alex for help (withdraw some of his normal human blood and replace Max's sample with Alex's.)
Back at school, Topolsky learns of Max being in hospital and sends an agent to check out the situation. As both the agent and Michael race to get the blood sample, Liz and Isabel draw blood from (a very confused) Alex - telling him that they'll explain everything later. Michael is successful in replacing Max's blood sample with Alex's. As he leaves, Michael notices a man in a suit looking at Max's chart.
After using Alex to save Max's life and protect the aliens' secret, Liz wants to fill Alex in on everything. Liz asks Max's opinion on this and he feels that it wouldn't be a good idea to tell Alex about them. Unsatisfied with the excuses that Liz has been giving him, Alex comes to the conclusion that they are all doing drugs.
After seeing Alex acting oddly at school, Topolsky suspects him as the person who may have swapped Max's blood sample. By using drugs, Topolsky gets a sample of blood from Alex to compare it to the sample they stile from the hospital. Meanwhile, the kids follow a man they saw at the hospital to his motel room. They break in, trying to get clues towards his identity, and discover he is there working for an Agent Topolsky, which brings them to the realisation that their 'guidance counsellor' isn't really there to give them guidance.
Isabel tells Max she saw Alex talking with Topolsky at school. Max in turn tells Liz, and she realises that she has to tell Alex the truth before he cracks and tells Topolsky what happened at the hospital.
Alex has to make a decision between Topolsky and his friends. He eventually decides to trust Liz (doesn't everyone?) and the two plan to turn the tables on Topolsky and reveal her as an FBI agent. Once exposed, Topolsky leaves Roswell, first talking to Liz telling her that there will be other who come to investigate Max.
Alex tells Liz that if she doesn't tell him the truth, their friendship is over. He demands to know the truth, and is disappointed in Liz when she won't tell him the truth. |
