After an encounter with Kyle's friends over Liz, Max realises that he may be risking revealing their secret. Max comes to the desicion that he needs to back off from Liz and wants things to go back to the way before he healed her.
Liz's grandmother, Claudia, whom she has always had a strong admiration for, has come to stay with them. Liz discovers that her grandmother has had a stroke and is in a coma when she comes home from a date with Kyle.
Not quite knowing what to do next, she leaves an emotional message on Max's answering machine asking him to come and meet her at the hospital.
Max, torn by his recent decision to back off and his true feelings for Liz, reluctantly goes to the hospital. When he arrives, he sees Kyle there who tells Max to stay away from Liz.
Michael wants to take revenge on the jocks (through practical jokes) who beat up Max. When he realises what Michael's doing, Max becomes angry at Michael and tells him that by carrying out this revenge, he's only jeopardizing their identity. Michael retorts that he already did that by saving Liz's life, which only furthers Max's feeling that he should stay away from Liz.
Liz finds Max and asks him if he can heal/save her grandmother. He replies that the only reason he could save Liz was because it was not her time to go. He can't save Claudia because he's not God. Liz finds out that Kyle's friends beat up Max.
Still at the hospital, Liz gets angry at Kyle who swears that he knew nothing about the beating. Not being able to fight her true feelings for Max, Liz breaks up with Kyle. After Kyle leaves, Max arrives and tells Liz that even though he may not be able to save her grandmother, he may be able to help them say goodbye.
He then establishes a connection with Claudia, and her ghostly form appears in the room. Liz tells her grandmother how much she's always admired her, Claudia responds by making Liz promise to always follow her heart. Liz and her grandmother say goodbye before Claudia dies. |
