Michael came into the world as a 6 year old human when he broke out of his incubation pod which came to Earth in the UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. He sometimes feels like an outsider as Isabel and Max were both adopted by the Evans family who are a nice 'everyday neighbourly' type family. Michael however, grew up with Hank Guerin (he was separated from Max and Isabel and adopted by Hank) who was an alcoholic, and abused Michael mentally and physically. Hank even used Michael as an excuse to get support checks.
However, this just made him want to find his true family - the place he really came from - even more. He is far more driven than the others to find information about their past and this sometimes leads him to make irrational decisions (which are usually fixed/rescued by Max).
Eventually, Michael managed to get out of the terrible living conditions with Hank and moved out into his own apartment - getting a job as a chef at The Crashdown where his on-again, off-again girlfriend Maria DeLuca works as a waitress.
At first, when he knew that humans knew his secret about being an alien, it made him feel uncomfortable. When his physical relationship with Maria stepped up a level and it became more than just physical, the first thing he thought to do was pull away. The only thing that kept him looking for the truth about where he came from, was the thought that if he ever did make it back to his home planet, he wouldn't be leaving behind anything important/love. Maria changed all this. He is trying to stay away from her as he is scared he might hurt her with his powers.
In his past life, he was engaged to Isabel and it is believed that he may have been Tess' brother.
Like the other aliens, he loves Tabasco sauce, and also pistachio icecream.
He finally let Maria 'see him' (ie. she got the 'flashes' of his past life as Liz had done when she kissed Max) and their relationship took a step up, especially when in the final episode of season two, he emerged from the granolith chamber by himself as he wanted to stay for Maria rather than go back to his home planet. However, Maria has decided she wants her life to be more normal and has broken up with him. Since it took so long for him to trust Maria properly, he now seems devastated that she wants to break it off. She has led him along a few times and he keeps thinking she wants their serious relationship back again. |
