Orwell Was Right, Dyer is Wrong
RE: Gwynne Dyer's "Orwell Was Wrong: The..."(June 24)
Gwynne Dyer's conjecture regarding Orwell's supposed "delight" about being "wrong" with regard to our present situation is laughable.
The "totalitarian boot" has not been lifted and people today, as Orwell suggested and warned, are as, if not more, unable to resist tyranny than in 1948 when Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published.
Television watching has become an epidemic, its adverts brainwashing billions of viewers worldwide into thinking that they need a gas-guzzling SUV, new disposable items and that insignificant events such as major league sports are important.
The few individuals that control the media today are much like Big Brother. Our food is genetically modified and unlabelled (against the wishes of 95% of Canadians).
We don't work for "The Party" as in 1984 but we all must contribute to the "Economy" which rules us to the point of destroying the Earth.
Orwell believed in social equality and would hardly have approved of the class war that is being waged by the Eves/Harris fiasco/disaster/nightmare (and its conservative supporters) against the poor, let alone "be delighted".
Gwynne would be wise to rethink exactly what George Orwell was warning us about and realise that perhaps George was in many ways right. He also might think deeply about the entire social and environmental world picture before putting trite words in a great social activist's mouth. Think about it Gwynne.
