Assisted in a number of youth programs the center offered. Also helped in a number of other departments including janitorial, elders, and children. I was also given the opportunity to attend the National Association of Friendship Centers AGM in Saskatchewan. It was neat to see how a non profit organization is operated at a national level. Aug '01 - March 2002 Tseshaht First Nation Community Access Program, Youth Intern - Updated the tribal webpage on a regular basis using dreamweaver and photoshop. I also taught interested people, the basics of computers such as basic webpage design, email, and the internet. I still update the tribal webpage whenever I am asked to. The site is www.tseshaht.com Jun- Aug 2001 Tseshaht First Nation Maintenance Assistant - I cut grass, brush cut, cleaned parks, set up halls for meetings, cleaned up halls after the meetings, and helped out wherever possible. I also transported other workers to their destinations, along with their equipment. Sept '99 - Mar 2001 Tseshahf First Nation Tseshaht Youth New Zealand Cultural Exchange Coordinator (Volunteer) - Volunteered in organizing and implementing a cultural exchange to New Zealand. 23 youth and adults traveled to New Zealand in the March 2001 to exchange cultures with the Maori People. Jun-Aug 2000 Tseshaht First Nation Recreation Assistant - Planned and organized recreational activities for the community for the summer. Activities included a community picnic, a trip to the waterslides, and elders conference trip. One of the big highlights was preparing the children for the annual Tlu-Piich Games which is an annual event. I also sat on the Tlu-piich games committee alongside the recreation coordinator.
HIGHLIGHTS IN MY LIFE Insomnia - I was an extra in this movie called Insomnia. It was shot here in Port Alberni for a bit. I was a searcher. I was at the set all day. This was one of the most easiest jobs ever. We just sat there all day pretty much. Al Pacino was at our set. It was neat to be so up close with such a celebrity. I also met Robin Williams that week. Me and Samara went and tracked him down at this hotel. When he went up the elevator, he said "chuu!". I am only a little blur in the background, but at least I can say I was in a movie. October 1999 - Attended the World Series in Atlanta Georgia along with my parents. The game was Atlanta Braves Vs. New York Yankees. I am not exactly the biggest baseball fans, but at least I can say I've been to the world series. New Zealand Cultural Exchange 2001 - I planned this cultural exchange along with my aunt and my then youth worker. It was cool to see somethin happen that was just a vision of mine. This just proves that if you set your mind on something, anything is possible. It turned out to be a great success. We witnessed parts of the Maori culture you will never get out of a tourist package. We also got to see more than just New Zealand. Our stop overs on the way there and back were Fiji and Hawaii. We left the airport for about 8 hours in Fiji. And omg, fiji is fucking hot! Way to hot for my liking. But at least I can say I was there. And I remember, some satellite came down when were in Fiji. Here I thought it was lightning New Zealand 2002 - I travelled to New Zealand solo in March 2002 for 4 weeks. Traveling alone isn't so bad after all. I ended up staying with my friend Nigs and her family for three weeks, then went and stayed with a friend in Auckland. My auntie Hazel was also in New Zealand. It was fun, and i Have no regrets about going. Just wish I could've stayed longer, cause time just flew by when I was there. Road Trip, California, 2003 - I have always wanted to go on a road trip. Me and friends always talked about. But this was the year we actually did it. It turned out to be a blast. We weren't sure where we were going at first, but we just knew we were going somewhere. We ended up tagging along with my cousin Gina/JP and their family to Los Angeles. JP was going down for a family reunion. Doug/Bessie and their family also came along. It turned out to be a blast. We just cruised all over LA, went and checked out Hollywood. I think one of the biggest highlights was climbing some mountain so we can get closer to the HOLLYWOOD sign. We were going through peoples backyards. Luckily, we didn't get shot! Cody also tried running down this steep ass hill, and fell on the bottom, and his camera went down a little cliff into the bush. But yea, this was a fun trip I'll never forget. We got to see a lot. We went to Las Vegas for a few hours, then went to San Francisco. It was neat to meet JP's family. That's where JP grew up was in Los Angeles. Las Vegas 2004 - I travelled to Las Vegas along with my family in April 2004. We went as part of the celebration of my grandmother's retirement. It turned out to be fun. I found out that las vegas isn't all about the gambling. There is a lot to see and do in vegas. And you even get free booze! I had fun though. Naming Ceremony 1995 - In 1995 my parents decided to follow cultural (native) protocol and give me, my sister and my brother names. This was a few years in the making. A potlatch is a huge thing to put on. There is a lot to do in preparation of this special event. The potlatch goes way back a few thousand years. But yea, it was neat to see my family pull together, and work together. We also had singing/dancing nights where we learned and practiced songs and dances of our ancestors. We had a good turn out for our putlatch, with over 500 guests from up and down the coast of vancouver island. We had to feed the guests, keep them entertained, and give them gifts just because this is something we do at potlatches. It started at 12 noon, then went till 7am the next day. So yea, it was a long long day, but all worth it. There were tribes from all of Nuuchahnulth, and also family from Snaw-naw-as come and share their songs. This is something I'll never forget. The School Years - I pretty much spent a lot of my childhood years on the "rez". I attended a private "all-native" school located on our reserve. We were taught songs/dances/traditions of our people. This is what makes our shcool the most unique. There is no other school which teaches this in the world. I am proud to have attended this school, and have no regrets about going here. I went to Haahuupayuk school from Kindergarten right up until grade 6. Grade 7 was a big change for me. I went from being with all my people to being a total minority in Junior High. It was a total change, but I manged well in this school. I think I almost failed grade 7, but I ended up passing. The Jr High I attended was called A.W. Neill. I did end up failing grade 9. I then transfered to Alberni District Secondary school for grade 10. This was another major change. I went to a school of about 300 to one of 1200. So yea, that was a major change. I made it to grade 11/12. I totally regret dropping out, and don't recommend anyone do it. I eventually went back to school at North Island college, and presently continuing on with my education. Queen Charlotte Islands 1997 - I flew up to the Queen Charlottle Islands with some of my community members to attend the 25th anniversary of rediscovery. Rediscovery is a camp for youth to them more connected to the culture and to the surroundings. There were people from all over BC at this celebration. The Queen Charlottes are beautiful. Not very populated, and I seen a lot of Ravens. I remember waking up one morning in Skidigate, and going for a lil walk to the ocean, and there were two grey whales no even far off the shore. Very nice site indeed. It was neat to witness everyone's cultures from all over. And we also shared our Nuuchahnulth culture with everyone. Reno, 1996 - I took a lil road trip with my auntie gloria, grandmother rose, and my cousin Rosa. We just went to Reno Nevada. It was a fun time. I was glad to spend this time with my late grandmother. I truly enjoyed my time with her.
