How to Become an Officer
Home
In order to run for the Board:
By Monday, May 18:
By 5pm - Email Sam at [email protected], stating that you would like to run for office.
By 2pm - Submit a 1-2 page double-spaced, typed statement to Dr. Weseley explaining why you want to be on the Board, that you have time to be on the Board, and what youd like to do if on the Board. You can hand it to Dr. Weseley in person or leave it for her in the mail slots outside the Research Center.

On Thurs, May 21, you must give a speech no longer than 2 minutes in which you explain why people should vote for you. We will then hold a vote.

Immediately after the vote, there will be a quiz on the things we think are important for good officers to know:
 Current events
 The Constitution
 Rules of parliamentary procedure

The above information will be used by the outgoing senior officers and Dr. Weseley to select the officers for next year; there will probably be 5. The 1) vote, 2) quiz score and 3) factors reflecting your commitment to Model Congress/ability to be an effective officer will be considered in the selection process. All candidates will be notified of the outcome via email.

Before submitting your name and application, make sure that you have the time, commitment and interest to be an officer. All board members:
- Attend all Friday meetings as well as the Board meeting that follows, a commitment that generally lasts until about 430pm
- Attend all school and local events, typically 3-5 each year
- Organize and run additional meetings to prepare students for college congresses.
- In addition, each board member is assigned set of responsibilities (e.g., publicity, recruitment).

When selecting Board members there are roughly three equal factors.

Commitment and effectiveness as an officer
This is based on your activity and history in the club (e.g., attendance, speeches, participation in events, maturity). The Senior Board members and faculty adviser determine who they think will be the most effective officers. The platform that you submit is crucial. The platform must be a 1-2 page double-spaced, typed statement to Dr. Weseley explaining why you want to be on the Board, that you have time to be on the Board, and what you'd like to do if on the Board.

The time commitment to be an officer is significant.  If you do not have the time to do the job, don't run.  You must be able to attend all Friday meetings (until 4:30), attend all school and local events (typically 3-5 each year), organize and run additional meetings to prepare students for away congresses, and, outside of meetings, take care of your own assigned set of responsibilities.

The vote
Elections are held in May, and Model Congress members who have attended at least 1/2 of that year's meetings get to vote for their Board. Remember, that if you leave meetings early or arrive late, you get 1/2 attendance credit. All candidates will be notified the outcome of the election via email.

The quiz
Prospective officers take a quiz on current events, the Constitution, and rules of parliamentary procedure.
