| Deforestation is the destruction of forests and woodlands. It is permanant and is caused by the actions of humans. Humans turn forests into crop lands for food production. Deforestation is also caused when cattle ranching and cash crops are formed, commercial logging, and the use of wood for firewood and building material. Deforestation is a problem because of the rapid rate that it is occuring. It also alters local as well as global climates. Trees are a big part of the carbon cycle. When forests are cleared by burning or rotting CO2 is released into the atmosphere. This is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It also disrupts the water cycle because trees are needed for the respiration process. It leads to soil erosion and desertification also. Finally, it leads to the extinction of certain species that rely forests as their habitat. Pros of this issue are that humans are able to have more food from the crops formed through deforestation. Also, we are able to have more firewood and items made out of wood. These things are why stopping deforestation is such a difficult task. Many people think that the government should be doing more to stop deforestation. Different countries all over the world have ways of reducing deforestation. The Brazilian government, for example, has made reserves to protect the amazon forest from timber harvest. In order to reduce deforestation consumers can use wood and wood products sparingly. Also they can buy energy effecient wood stoves to cut down on the amount of wood they burn. There are many things that I can personally do to help reduce deforestation. I can use paper sparingly or use recycled paper. Also I can use other wood products sparingly. Another thing I can do is plant an indigenous tree and convince others to do the same. The government could set up more reserves to help save and protect indigenous forests. |
