Music

music

As far back as I can remember, I have held a deep interest in music. In fact, my parents tell me that even when I was a baby I was fascinated by music and the only way to get me to sleep was to play one particular song. I have no way way of verifying the veracity of these claims now, but I do know that now I enjoy all genres of music.

I started out by listening to Malayalam songs and then slowly branched out to Tamil, Hindi and English songs. Although my initial favorites were the new songs, over time I have come to treasure old songs. Initially I used to listen to a lot of English pop and rap, but now listen almost exclusively to rock and old Hindi songs.

making music

Aside from having a passion for listening to all types of music, I have always felt a desire to make music by playing some musical instrument. With this in mind I took some drums lessons in '03. Due to lack of time I was able to attend only around 20 odd classes in a couple of months. In this period I have acquired some idea about basic rhythms, learned how to read staff notation and got my timing right. As of now I can play many of the basic rock beats and can also play some of the slightly more difficult ones involving off-notes. However, I still cannot play live for most songs because I am not fluent with rolls and beat changes.

The most difficult part about learning drums is getting access to one. Although cheap ones are available for learning purpose, finding a place to put one is a more difficult proposition. Even more difficult would be to get your neighbors to tolerate your practice sessions. Maybe one day I will buy one of those electronic percussion pads and resume my learning. Although it costs much more and does not give the feel of an actual drum, nothing can beat it for convenience and flexibility.
