Tree Measuring Activity
The Applied Math students investigated three different methods of measuring tree heights using ratios.
Activity 1
1. Measure the height of a small tree
2. Measure the circumference of the trunk of the small tree with a string and measure the string on a yardstick
3. Set up a ratio of circumference to height
4. Measure the circumference of 2 other trees
Activity 2
1. Have one partner stand in front of a tree, and the other at a distance that would allow them to see the full height of the tree when holding up the yard/meterstick
2. The partner at a distance holds up the yard/meterstick, vertically, at eyelevel such that the lower end of the yard/meterstick appears to be at the bottom of the tree where it meets the ground
3. Measure how tall your partner looks and how tall the tree looks
4. Set up a ratio to estimate the height of the tree
5. Repeat the procedure for two more trees
Activity 3:
1. Hold a yardstick on the tip of a shadow of a tree, & measure the length of its shadow.
2. Measure the length of the shadow cast by the tree.
3. Set up a ratio to compare the length of the yardstick's shadow to the length of the tree's shadow to estimate the height of the tree.
