Take your family on a Hike, go to the zoo, explore the place you call home!

1. Orange County Wild- go with a leader to take a nature walk in one of the OC's wild places.

2.
Joshua Tree National Park- This amazing place is 2.5 hours driving from School.  This is one of Dr. Heydler's favourite Southern California places and a wonderful place to spend a day or even a weekend!

3. Walk through the
tidepools at Laguna Beach, Dana Point, Crystal Cove and others.  This is a nice way to spend some time on the beach with your family; go during low tide.  Bring some sunscreen and your camera! 

4. Go hiking or Kayaking in
Upper Newport bay- this is one of the best birding sites in Orange County, there are wonderful wetlands to explore.  NB- there are also programs for service learning hours through OCParks.

5.  Find a natural area
near your home, go explore it, take photos and tell Dr. Heydler about it- she'll add it to this list!

Get Involved!
There are many local organisations dedicated to preserving the very special environments contained within Orange County.  Below I have listed just a few of them.  This list is by  no means exhaustive, nor meant to be a stamp of approval by me for their activities.  It's just to let you know where you can find out what's going on locally and get involved in protecting the places where you live, work and play.

1. California Native Plant Society- Has regional chapters (Our local one is the Orange County Chapter): has information  on the California flora and volunteer opportunities as well as lots of other information!

2.
The Environmental Nature Center, in Costa Mesa.  A great place to explore the habitats of Orange County.

3.
The Nature Conservancy.  International NGO (non-governmental organization) dedicated to the preservation of Nature.  Also has local chapters, one working in the Irvine Ranch Lands Reserve

4.
The Bolsa Chica Conservancy, work to preserve the wetlands at Bolsa Chica.

5.
Defend the Bay: an organisation dedicated to preserving and protecting the Newport Bay.  Does lots of Environmental Advocacy (for you future lawyers!)

Earth Resources Foundation: A non-profit dedicated to developing environmental responsibility.

7.
Tree Walkers International- an organisation dedicated to conserving the world's amphibians, roughly 1/3 of which are threatened with extinction.
