DISTURBING OCCURRENCE - Mr. Carter held an inquest at St Thomas's Hospital on Thursday relative to the death of Mrs. Emma Povey, aged 44, the wife of a hosier, carrying on business at 21, The Pavement, Wimbledon. - It appeared from the evidence of the husband that his wife had for some time been somwhat despondent. Last Saturday morning; about seven o''clock; she arrose from her bed and dressed herself. Having done so, she complained of feeling faint, and at the same time opened the lower portion of the window. Immediately after witness saw her body going through the open space. She fell a depth of fifty feet. She was taken to Dr. Berry's surgery, and later conveyed to St. Thomas's Hospital; when it was found that she had sustained a fracture of the right ankle joint and right arm; together with other injuries. The leg was amputated but the unfortunate woman expired the following day. - Mr. Cooper, on of the house surgeons at St. Thomas's Hospital, having deposed to the death being due to the injuries received, and further evidence having been adduced, the Jury returned a verdict of "Death from Misadventure". General sympathy is expressed in the neighbourhood for Mr. Povey and family, which consists of eight children of whom the oldest is only about 16.

Emma married Thomas Povey, son of William Povey and Mary Ann Johncey, on 2 Sep 1866 in Poplar, London. (Thomas Povey was born on 2 Apr 1844 in Chelsea, London and died on 18 Oct 1919 in Wimbledon, Surrey.)
