General Notes: Benjamin Burgess was not one of the Newport Township grantees at Newport, N.S. but came as an agent or tenant farmer to Elisha Clark who drew Newport Farm lot B 2nd Div. No. 2 on 18 Feb. 1762. Elisha Clark Jr. sold land in Newport, N.S. to Benjamin Burgess to fulfill a bargain made by Elisha Clark Sr. and Benjamin Burgess; Elisha Clark Jr. was living at Hamstead, New Brunswick in 1797 when the transaction was made; Benjamin Burgess' sister Sarah married Philip Mosher who was at Newport, N.S. in the early days of the settlement. Another sister of Benjamin , Lydia married in 1751 Maxson Mosher, brother of Philip. These facts are related in Duncanson book NEWPORT,NOVA SCOTIA-A RHODE ISLAND TOWNSHIP. It is interesting to note that in Dr. Barry H. Burgess' 1941 book BURGESS GENEALOGY in the introduction on page xii the following passage may be read. "Many lines of Burgesses in America are not descendants of Thomas Burgess of Sandwich, Massachusetts; in fact, in Nova Scotia there are many Burgess families not traceable to the said Thomas; but from him the original Hants County Burgesses are descended, - descended through Benjamin Burgess,(This Benjamin should not be confused with the King's County Benjamin of the Sixth Generation.) who removed from Newport, Rhode Island, to Newport, Hants County about the same time that Seth Burgess settled in King's County. The said Benjamin and Seth were third cousins, that is, they each belonged to the fourth generation removed from Thomas. At the present day (this would be about 1940) the relationship between the King's County and the Hants County branches is in the vicinity of eight cousinship."It is therefore this Benjamin that they are referring to." From the Rev. Ebenezer Burgess' BURGESS MEMORIAL-1865, on page 29 the following is found under #115 "BENJAMIN BURGESS, s. of Edward (4) and Elizabeth Coe, of Newport, R.I., was b. July 13, 1728, m.
