Setting up the website
Setting up a website with GeoCities is relatively straightforward and reasonably quick. Geocities gave me the option of choosing from two different ways of setting up the site. I had to provide a yahoo hotmail account in order to register. This task was also rather simple and the information required was similar to that requested by most hotmail account providers.
Connecting via a HTML IDE such as FrontPage
I was unable to contact this site using Front Page but I found that I could upload html files created using Front Page to the site.
Internal HTML editor
The site provides an internal HTML editor -'Yahoo Page Builder'. This editor allowed me to build and edit the site. I found that the upload speeds for this editor was slower over a dial up link than from the college computer labs. I also found that the tool tips feature on the toolbar icons was not working.
Shopping site
This website cannot be used as a shopping site.
Website Speed
The website was quick to download. The validation tool reported the following download speeds:
56k Link - 9767 bytes HTML Page - 2.79 Seconds 57400 bytes Images - 16.40 Seconds
T1 Link - 9767 bytes HTML Page - 49 Seconds 57400 bytes Images - 2.87 Seconds.
How pure is the HTML on the site?
When I viewed the source code I noticed some code that did not in opinion come under the heading of 'pure HTML'. The validation tool reported a significant amount of errors in the HTML code. These included: missing 'alt' tags on the images, unmatched tags, leading white space and empty container elements
What a user must put with to make use of the FREE hosting
In order to avail of the 'FREE' hosting, the user must accept the posting of advertisements by GeoCities on the site.
Components present in a page introduced by this website
Apart from the content input by myself, my page includes some images from the Geocities Clipart Library, some JavaScript used for the advertisements, style sheets and tables.
