Psych 101: A Beginner's Guide To Interpersonal Psychic Etiquette and Ethics

Personal Psychic Patterns

General Types of Patterns

Psychic Types
OK, folks, I am treading on thin ground here, but probably no more so than in the rest of the site, given that I am unable to find any authorities on these topics! This section is, however, the most likely to have people who know a great deal and take exception to my functional and experiential explanations. If you are one of those folks, please feel free to send me more information and/or sources at [email protected]. These are the patterns which I have noticed in my experience with other folks.

Alright, now let's talk about what these mean a little. First, the columns above mean something. The quality of "Receptive" is linked with "Water", "Moon" and "Neptune/Jupiter". So far so good. That was the easy part. Next, most folks are not a pure type --for example, someone may be mostly receptive, and a little projective. Receptive and Projective should be pretty intuitive. Receptive is someone who primarily picks up on, or "receives", the thoughts or emotions of other people or another person in particular. Projective is the reverse -- someone who SENDS information. Radio jargon, whot eh? You can already see that someone who is "Projective" may not KNOW they are sending, since the information is going OUT. Someone who is "Receptive" cannot very well ignore what is going on in their own brain! For this reason, even persons who are minimally receptive tend to figure out that they have some psychic ability, whereas someone who is primarily projective can drive people around them nuts before someone gets up the guts to say anything.

The rest of the table comes mostly from the astrological literature. I don't really have convincing data for this, but instead have a few colorful tales. In my admittedly limited personal experience, most of the strongly projective types I've known have had Sun signs in Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). In addition, let's add in Scorpio, which is a Water sign, but co-ruled by Mars, which is a Fire planet. Typically, they have been entirely oblivious to what was going on. The most extreme example was a young Leo who lost a pet, and was grieving in the sudden and very extreme way that the very young tend towards. At the time, I lived about three to four blocks away, was doing some housecleaning, and could not understand WHY on earth I suddenly burst into tears picking up a dustbunny and couldn't stop. There was no reason for me to be crying, my life was rather OK at the moment. It was later that I discovered that the times aligned precisely, and it seemed a bit more than a coincidence to me.

A little now about the Receptive type. Notice that the planets which are associated with this type are Neptune and Jupiter. Both of these are known for their ability to blur boundaries. They actually function to help create the receptive type of psychic by dissolving the psychic boundaries. It is not perhaps so much the power of their psychic abilities as that they are less able to keep OUT the general surrounding stimuli. Jupiter is, like Pluto, a boundary-spanner, operating like a Water element (by dissolving) while it is technically more of a Fire planet. Look at it, though, or pictures of it. It IS a diffuse gas giant, and you can see how it would not be particularly helpful with defining boundaries.

Earth signs and planets are better at strengthening boundaries, but they can also help to add power to the ability to send or project. I don't personally have a sense of how air signs or planets function psychically. They probably have a role to play, and I just haven't figured it out yet.

Aspects between outer planets and the personal points (Sun, Moon, Ascendent) are associated with psychic ability. I have particularly noted the impact of "hard" aspects (conjunction, square, opposition) between Neptune/Jupiter and the strongest personal points (Sun, Moon, Ascendent). Here is a table which gives you the correspondence of the planets, elements, and signs. If you have an actual horoscope chart of your own, you can check for the issues and aspects described. If you don't have a chart, you can get one by trying the Free Sample Chart option at Astrology.com.

Environmental Factors
Psychic senses are a subtle and ephemeral perception for many. It can be difficult to really get a sense of any pattern, even if the pattern exists, and a pattern can be complicated by other factors in the environment. Alcoholics Anonymous has a marvelous acronym they use to indicate factors which create a sense of personal vulnerability, times when one is most at risk of poor judgement. These same factors can also create a psychic vulnerability, or a tendency to reach out inappropriately and unintentionally. Their acronym is H.A.L.T., and they say, "Don't allow yourself to become too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired." This is good commonsense advice for everyone, and becomes particularly important for people with any kind of extra sensitivity or vulnerability. Basically, if someone says, "Stay grounded," this is how to do it -- eat enough, get enough sleep, talk with other people, and think sensible content thoughts, focus on the silver lining instead of the cloud. Likewise, you will notice that some spiritual or meditation sects or vision quests will invert this maxim to increase a psychic or spiritual sensitivity under controlled circumstances, asking the seeker to fast, purify the body, remain awake, be isolated, etcetera.

Patterns Associated with Psychic Types
Other patterns will likely be linked to the type of sensitivity you have. Let me give an example. Let's say you are a Neptune/Jupiter type, with blurred boundaries. Transiting Moon in water signs or in aspect to your own Neptune or Jupiter configuration may heighten your sensitivity. Similarly, Neptune or Jupiter activities may heighten your sensivity, such as drinking alcoholic beverages, or spiritual meditation. If you have access to an accurate horoscope, you may be able to also identify a few other patterns. If your Neptune/Jupiter aspect is what is known as an applying aspect (with your Sun or Moon, for example, at a lesser degree than the Neptune/Jupiter) your sensitivity may strengthen over your life span. If it is a separating aspect, it may weaken as you age.

If you are a Mars/Sun type and tend to be projective, strong emotions, especially fear or anger, will focus and intensify your abilities. If your psychic abilities are Moon type, they may strengthen and fade as the moon waxes and wanes. You may find out more about your own pattern by tracking the lunar cycle or the moon's movements through the signs. More information about that is available below in the exercises section. Remember that most people are a blend of types, even if one type predominates they can express a range of ability, even if weakly. This may make it more complicated to identify a personal pattern.
