Fuel's Trust In Its Own Instincts Pays Off

(10/19/00, 6 p.m. ET) - Members of Fuel took the time to make their recent release, Something Like Human, just the way they wanted it, and it's paying off. " Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" has reached the Number Two spot on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Singer Brett Scallions told LAUNCH that producer Ben Grosse gave the band the confidence to trust its own instincts. " I think it shows in this record," he said. "We held the reigns a lot tighter on this one, and we didn't put our trust so much in the people around us as much as we did on the first record. We trusted our own instincts more. The beauty of working with Ben Grosse was we sat down in the beginning and Ben said, 'Look, man, I'm here to make sure that you guys make a record that you're going to be proud of for the rest of your lives.'"

Scallions added that Grosse's " mentality was, 'I'm going to give you my suggestions on things, and I'm going to try to convince you that my suggestions are the right way to go, but if you don't want to use 'em, fine. We'll use your suggestions. The bottom line is we want you guys to be happy.' This is a record that, [for] us as a band, we've got to live with this thing for years and years to come--for the rest of our lives."

Fuel continues its tour Friday (October 19) at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. The trek runs through November 17 in San Bernardino, California.
