Fuel Proves to be "Something Like Human"

Something Like Human, the title of the new Fuel CD, was just released on September 19, 2000. It is full of hard-core emotion, angst and the deep, throaty sound of lead singer, Brett Scallions. The band's first album released in 1998, Sunburn, made a tremendous splash onto the music scene with its intense lyrics and heavy sounds. Now, the Fuel quartet is much more confident this time around, taking a more active role in the production of the new CD. Fuel's lyrics and overall sound are much more defined; the group has indeed found its particular identity in the world of music.

Something Like Human certainly is focused on the theme of humanity, its suffering, its perplexities, its desires and its weaknesses. The first single, "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)," is rapidly ascending to the top of the charts. The thread of love bleeding is prevalent here as it is in other songs such as "Last Time." The pain of a beloved relationship ending, the anguish of giving too much to an unworthy love, the frustration of human betrayal, the longing for spirituality and completeness of the soul and the emptiness that can exist within the heart are just a few of the subject areas that Fuel ardently puts into biting words and a pungent beat. Even the slower ballad-like songs are expressive of a hard-edged sentimentality.

The members of Fuel, the now Harrisburg residents, have not just been in the studio all this time recording their new album, but they have also been actively promoting their musical work. In August, they were a part of the Rolling Rock Town Fair with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other prominent acts. More recently, they were at Club Laga, in Pittsburgh, PA giving a fan appreciation performance. And, let me tell you, the fans were indeed appreciated. The respect that Fuel exhibited towards its Pittsburgh fans was of the utmost sincerity. Fuel played with every ounce of its being last Sunday evening. The connection between Fuel and its audience was energetic and passionate; the room was filled with a vigor that cannot be suppressed. Each fed off the energy of the other. No one left that night with hopes unfulfilled.

Fuel is a band that proves that it is unlike any other on the music scene today. In spite of being compared to various Seattle grunge influences, these boys perform, write and make the music that they feel. They have created an image that identifies with who they are and what they believe in. Nothing can stand in the way of what they want, and Fuel fans are most grateful for that.
