Homesteading in Florida
After spending our entire lives living in the suburbs, we moved out to our four acres in Central Florida in the Fall of 2002. Our love of gardening found its perfect setting.  We discovered many wonderful treasures around our property as the months undolded. New flowers appeared in every corner that we identified.  We discovered blackberries groswing wild in one corner and a couple of pineapple bushes behind the barn. We enjoyed oranges and comquats from our trees.  In the Spring, Don built our chicken coop, and we received our first set of 27 chicks by mail in March.  We got an assortment of different breeds.  It took them 9 months before they laid their first egg.  That was our biggest surprise.  Since then, they have faithfully layed about 10 eggs a day.
Since we homeschool, the country lifestyle has been a perfect fit for our family.  Mary is home with the kids and they have time to enjoy the outdoors.  The children can run outside safely, learn about animal husbandry, climb trees, keep gardens, study and enjoy nature.
