Waltzing Matilda

You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me ....

Our school is having its annual "Culture Festival" next week. This basically involves the kids doing skits on stage. I was not asked to contribute so I will surprise them with an unannounced didj performance followed by a rousing rendition of "Waltzing Matilda". Yuki the 4 foot-tall blow-up kangaroo will accompany me.

I took Yuki to school this morning. Quite a site I'm sure. The town’s sole European male dressed in charcoal suit and wrap-around sunnies - a mountain bike wedged firmly between his buttocks and a 4-foot tall blow-up kangaroo clinging to his back.

As I cycled along, I began singing the words to Waltzing Matilda and found myself becoming a little teary. Surprising really. I am not the patriotic type.

Got some funny looks.

It took my mind back to the rendition of Waltzing Matilda that the Aussie students did at Gajah Mada University in Indonesia a few years ago. We sang in Bahasa Indonesia and the performance was further enhanced by the use of a live baby goat (jumbuck) stuffed unceremoniously into a tucker bag, a children's swimming pool (billabong) and three cardboard horses (thoroughbreds).

It's funny how things work out.
