Myasthenia Gravis patients:  remember these

by Rory Esperanza

1. People with myasthenia gravis especially those new are most often, irritable people. Those who have generalized myasthenia are having problems communicating because of their weakness in speaking. They are weak to do it by themselves so if they want something and have it done by somebody else, they get mad because people around them cant understand them or they have a hard time trying to relay what they want. Sometimes, even when they can do it by themselves, they get irritated when their family members treat them like worthless or invalid persons. Their belief or religion and family can help a lot to lessen this irritable nature;

2. People with generalized myasthenia gravis should always remember they could live a normal life. Single myasthenians should tell their boyfriends or girlfriends about their disease. It is better to tell it earlier so that they would know what to expect for in the future. Please dont think that because you have disease, you could not live a normal life. Women mgs could have normal children;

3. We (patients or physicians) should not judge myasthenians who self-medicate. The old ones or people who have this disease for a long time, usually, dont go to their physicians maybe because of the following reasons:

a. They would rather use their check-up fee money to buy their medicines rather than having their regular check-ups;

b. Because of the rising cost of medicines and most often, financial problems resulting from low income or low financial state would force them to make their own medicine intake. Ex. A myasthenian who could live just taking prednisone as his/her mg treatment or an mg patient who instead of taking 4 tabs of mestinon a day would only take 2 or lower.

c. Those who have the disease for more than ten years are often used to adjust their medicine intake. They know how to adjust their mestinon, prednisone, imuran or cytoxan. They will only come to the hospital or their doctors if they need to be intubated or they have other complications that need to checked like pneumonia.

4. For non-patients, loving a person with myasthenia gravis needs a lot of patience and understanding. You should remember to help him/her during most especially during his/her weak period, say after a crisis. Keep him/her up. Always motivate. Show them that he/she is loved and cared for. Emotional problems could weaken more. If you think you need help in his emotional problems, bring him/her to a psychiatrist.
