The 80's fashion scene was both similar and different from the present. For instance, denim jeans have lasted the years. Baggy jeans and denim jackets were in style in the 80's. Tighter and more feminine jeans seem to be favored in present times. Leather clothing however appears to have lost most of its appeal. During the 80's, leather was worn by musicians from the metal band Whitesnake to the underground punk bands like the Dead Kennedys. These days, leather is far less common in teens. One distinct difference is the goals in appearance between the 80's and present. In the 80's the goal was to get as many and as large of things as possible. Today, there is a much more streamlined look with tighter-fitting clothing. Altogether, the 80's have had a significant impact on modern fashion. Music of the 80's has set the stage for many musical trends of today. Rap played an important role in both the 80's and present times. MC Hammer topped record sales, becoming the first rap artist to have an album go diamond with over 10 million sales. Today, Rap can arguably have overcome Rock and Roll in popularity with the success of artists like 50 Cent and Eminem. The image of the Rock has also changed since the 80's. In the 80's, tough looking rockers like Billy Idol were the face of rock and roll. Today, the majority of popular artists are known as 'emo' and sing in high pitched tones about loss and sorrow. The past 20 years have also changed the way in which we enjoy music. In the 80's, it would be common to see a teen walking around with a boom box on his shoulder to listen to music. Today we have the iPod, a much more efficient device in which we can enjoy thousands of songs rather than the dozen or so CD could hold. The 80's had a definitive impact on modern music.
