"I know you're just concerned about us...deepheart..." Jess
quietly answered Kit, "but I couldn't stand not knowing how you
are....Maybe Flee'll want to stay...but I doubt it."
Felecia had heard best friend's words and seriously said, "you
go, I go."
Jessy added, pulling Kit's arm against her breast, "we'll be all
right, darlin'....Arnold's forces are over there...."
Kit dropped his head and shook it slightly, then raised it back
up and looked at Jess, "yeah, I know. I can't make you do anything,
can I?"
"Hmmm..." she thought with a grin, "maybe there's somethin'
...."
"I'm afraid to ask," he answered.
"You'd better be," Flee smiled over.
Then Kit got as serious as Jessy had ever seen him. "I can't
let you two go. I'm really sorry. But they're probably going to be
shooting at us again and who knows if we'll be able to get out of
there. I'm sorry, Jess. But no." And he summoned the courage to
look into her eyes looking into his.
She raised her brow and just looked into his eyes for some
moments as they both teared up a little. "Well..." she said quietly
and deliberately, "then you're not going...."
Everyone in the Jeep was dangling on each word, wondering
how this was going to turn out as Will drove them across the ramp
and parked in front of Mona's office. Kit and Jess just kept looking
at each other, gauging how serious the other was and searching
their minds for the right outcome, and the others started to get out
after Will shut off the engine. Jess kissed Kit on the lips and then
they just silently, arm in arm, followed everyone out to "Lolly" to
check the cargo and the ship, neither of them saying anything. But
they were still thinking hard.
They all went over the flight plan inside the office. And then
they were set to go. Jasmine and Sage expressed their desire to go
back to Sarajevo to help out there. And Will and Gena were going,
saying that they had done it before, and telling the guys that there
really was no need for any of them to go.
Kit, Jess and Flee were all teary eyed from the feelings from
their friends and then their looks at each other.
"Well, deepheart...?" Jess said to Kit.
He gave a pained look, looked around the room at everyone,
then back to Jessica and Felecia and answered slowly, "...I can't
tell you no...."
She gave him a strong hug, put an arm around him and her
other around Flece, then they all started out to the 3 ready on the
ramp.
As they took their seats in the cockpit, Kit turned on the ADF
radio and they heard the WPG Network announcing that the Native
Chiefs were speaking from the stage at Monument Valley.
"...This is a great thing of all time we are seeing..." the chief
one among them kept going.
"That sounds like...!" Jess said quietly in astonishment. Kit
just nodded at her, they and Flee recognizing Lioneagle's voice.
"...And it has been in our prophecies since the beginning..."
the chief continued. "The Spirits tell us the countries should not
worry about their power...because it is now with the people...and
the people soon will have victory!..." he told the world and the
half-million revelers there in the Valley, to all the cheers, applause
and all everywhere.
"Jeezall, Hotey..." Jess murmurred, "I just didn't imagine
what it'd really be like...."
"I don't think I did either, precious," he answered as they
all buckled themselves into their seats. And the chiefs and Natives
at Monument began singing and dancing ancient songs of battles
and victories, the commentators telling their audience to listen in
with them to that broadcast from Arizona, reminding the world
about the beginning, not even a month before.
"God, Kit..." Jess beamed over to Cody.
"Yep," he confirmed, and they proceeded to fire up the
twenty-seven hundred or some horses, then taxied out and got
into the air, Jessy and Flee making quick calls home before they
punched their over-grossed DC 3 into the black night sky.
