Screech Owl  Otus asio |
||||||||||||
The screech owl can have two different color phases, or "morphs." The one on the left is a gray phase, the right is a red phase. These little birds stand about 7-10 inches tall. They were incorrectly dubbed "screech owls" by the early European settlers, thinking that it looked like one of their screech owls "back home." The screech owl, despite its name, does not actually screech, they have a tremulous whinny call, and another monotonatic (one tone) call. THIS is an example of the monotone call. THIS is the whinny call. |
