Burrowing owls live in western U.S., southern Canada, Mexico and the southern half of Florida. They take up residence in old prairie dog or skunk burrows, and sometimes will excavate their own burrows if thee ground is soft enough. When approached by a possible threat, burrowing owls will bob up and down, then dive into their burrows. They are crepuscular, which means they are active at dawn and dusk hours. They like to have cattle or bison graze near their burrows because it keeps the grass low enough that they can see over it. Click to hear them.
