Barred Owl Strix varia |

Barred owls are also know as Wood Owls. They have a distinctive call of "who-cooks-for-you? who-cooks-for-you-all?" They are common in dense coniferous or mixed woods near swamps or riverbottoms. These owls are opportunistic hunters and will eat small rodents, reptiles, snakes, insects, crayfish, frogs, small birds, and any other small creatures it can grab. Barred owls are are one of the only two owls in North America with brown eyes instead of yellow, barn owls being the other brown-eyed owl. While mostly nocturnal, they can be heard and possibly seen during the day. They do not make their own nests, but will rather take over the old nest of a raven, crow or hawk. When they lay their eggs, they begin incubating right away, so the chicks develop at different rates. When full grown, barred owls Stand 18-22 inches tall, and have a wingspan of 3.5-4 feet. I found two barred owl calls that sound pretty good, here is ONE and here is the OTHER. |
