HAPPINESS

The class of ten year olds were talking about their future and what they wanted to be.  One wanted to be an astronaut, another a pop star, another a policeman.  One girl in the room was sitting quietly.  Was she still thinking about it?  No, she was quite clear what she wanted to be and when the teacher sought her answer she replied, "I would like to be happy."  Everyone was astonished.  They didn't know what to say but she was right.  Happiness is more important than position or possessions.
Anyone who thinks that position and possessions alone bring happiness has got it all wrong.  I am told that if you really want to see bored faces (as if anyone would!) you should book in to one of those super luxury cruises in the Caribbean.  Happiness stems from inside people, not from luxuries outside.
Jesus speaks of what makes for true happiness in the first part of his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapter 5, verses 1 to 12).  Read it and be challenged by it if you dare!  The Psalmist tells us: Happy are the people whose God is the Lord (Psalm 144:15) for the root of true happiness lies in the knowledge that, come what may, we are safe in the hands of God.
