The West Coker Residents' Group met on Thursday 11th January at Burrells House and were joined by Alan Chinn, the Crime Reduction Officer, Pc Iain Stamper, our Beat Bobby, Stan Hill, the Housing Officer from South Somerset Homes and a good turnout of residents despite it being bone-chillingly cold outside! There were many issues discussed: community care, legal responsibility for gritting the paths, crime and how to prevent it, what the Neighbourhood Watch entails and what we need to set it up. To start a Neighbourhood Watch requires approximately ten homes in close proximity to each other all wanting to become involved. There was a good response to the last endeavour to start Neighbourhood Watches through out the village but it is important to have homes in a concentrated area for this to work. Enclosed in your Ropewalker this month is a leaflet to fill in which can either be given to Pc Iain Stamper when he is on his beat or dropped into 11, Lake

fields. From the replies, Alan will sort out the logistics and off we go! It was mentioned that having the Residents' Group meetings in the evenings made it difficult for anyone with children to attend. The children are always welcome but of course there are bed-times to think about etc. Maybe we could get a baby-sitter circle organised - any solutions welcome. After the business was attended to, Sue (revered Warden at Burrells) topped the evening off with Christmas cake, biscuits and Earl Gray tea! Any suggestions for the next meeting can be sent to 11, Lakefields or call Mike Thrasher on 863364 and leave a message. The Residents' Group meetings are very informal and relaxed, although there is a start time; if you come along later - that's fine. It has been suggested that we have a 'Cheese and Wine Evening' - look out for details for this and our next meeting - see you there.
Sallie McCoy.
