| Mary Wood -Simple Songs of this Oklahoma singer-songwriter deal with personal experiences The instrumentation on this cd is most of the times sparse but effective(guitar, piano, violin, some drumming). She sings in a calm almost timid way. The cd starts off with "Nothing", a song that if an americana top-40 should exist, this song certainly would enter the top-ten. Other highlights are "Pilot", "Two People" and "I believe". Track 3 "Keep it simple" sums it up : simple but good. Mary plays the guitar and piano(she's classical educated), Janey Wood plays percussion while Will Genter plays bass on some tracks. Very recommended to fans of the singer-songwriter stuff. This cd can be bought at CDBABY. |

| The Derailers, "Genuine" Lucky Dog/Sony Music "Genuine" is the new Bakersfield sound release from The Derailers who will be released on March 25. This is there second release on Lucky Dog records(and fifth studio disc overall). These guys loves the sound of the 60s-era country, pop and rock 'n' roll and mixed them in there own songs without stuckin' in the past. The band is based in Austin, the label is in Nashville and there hearts reside in Bakersfield. "Genuine" reflects ever-growing range with the breathtaking- by lush Orbison homage "Alone With You" the Marty Robbins-meets-Ritchie Valens "Leave A Message, Juanita", a ready-made George Jones weeper "Whole Other World" the nervous, merseybeat garage rock of "Scratch My Itch", the hitbount new country of "The Way To My heart" and more of that. If you like some good Bakersfield sound(Our Bakerpool Liversfield Thing-Brian Hofeldt) keep your eyes and ears open for this one. (www.derailers.com) |
