| Chitlin' Fooks, "Did It Again", Palomine Records I was surprised to enjoy the new album "Did It Again" from the Duch country minded duo Pascal Deweze (Sukilove, Metal Molly) and Carol Van Dyk (Bettie Serveert). This one sounds even better than there debuut "Chitlin' Fooks". I've seen these guys live on stage on Take Root Festival October 2001 Assen The Netherlands. For me it's Carol who makes Chitlin' Fooks with here beautiful voice and smart brains. This album remains me to there debuut wich included two of the from Dyk/Deweze wonderful originals that they become standards, "How Many Times" and "Seen It All". "Did It Again" includes 10 songs written by Deweze/Van Dyk. Some of the songs have some pedal steel playing from Jeff Marinus. For all Roots minded people, you must have this one. http://home.wanadoo.nl/ron/chitlinfooks/ |

| The Jan Smith Band "Tin Heart" Jan Smith is one of my surprises on the end from 2003. "Tin Heart" is a wonderful strong acoustic album with beautiful wriiten songs and was released on October 2002. The Jan Smith Band distillis the roots of folk, pop, bluegrass, classic country and jazz into a front porch sound that swings sometimes. In the band there is Tom Proutt (lead guitar, martin and electric instruments), Jeff Vogelgesang (mandolin and guitar) and Gerald Soriano on upright bass. It's Jan Smith who writes the songs and together with here band she plays and sings the most beautiful songs wich stay for a longtime in your head. "Tin Heart" becomes 5 stars and this one is a must for Roots minded people. www.jansmithband.com |
