Aged and Highly Respected Woman Passes Away

Deceased Resided in Dwight Since 1863

 

Mrs. Sophie Kern, one of the oldest living residents of this city, passed into Life Eternal Saturday night, September 15, 1928, at the age of 85 years and 9 months.  Her death was attributed to infirmities of old age.  For the past several months she had been confined to her bed.  All the care that kind and loving hands could give was shown her.

 

Sophie Dorothea Rehmus Kern was born in Friederickenhof at Pyritz, Pommern, Germany, December 15, 1842.  She came to America in June 1853, and lived with her father in Harlem, Illinois.  In 1859 she was united in marriage to Mr. Michael Kern.  This union was blessed with twelve children.  In the year of 1863, the family moved to Dwight, choosing this town for their future home.  The husband of the deceased died in 1898.  Five children, Johnnie, Katherine, Sophia, George, and Margaret, have preceded their mother in death.

 

The deceased is survived by seven children, viz: Mrs. Louise Blome of Clinton, Mrs. Anna Tyler of Indianapolis, Indiana, Anton of Henry, Peter of Dwight, Mrs. Augusta Kingore of Pontiac, Mrs. Dorothy Knudten of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Nicholas of Chicago; also 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. George Kistinger, of Ransom.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, September 18, at 2 o’clock from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  The following grandchildren acted as pallbearers; Harold Knudten, George M. Kern, Ray Doughty, Peter D. Kern Jr., Miles Kern and Albert Blome.

 

Internment was made in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Doughty and Miss Margaret Quinn, of Chicago; Mrs. And Mrs. Frank Kingore, of Pontiac; Rev. H. C. Siegert of Holgate, Ohio; Mrs. Erma Barnes of Hamlin, Ohio; Mrs. Dorothy Knudten, Harold Knudten, and Mrs. Helen Dors, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Earl Eagelston of Peoria; Mrs. Alice Vinson, Mrs. Nettie Taylor, Mrs. Rose North, Mrs. Della Young, Mrs. Eva Hungerford, of Clinton, Illinois, and Miss Ada Dalley, of Coal City.
