Onion Skin Weathering!
Onion skin weathering mainly occurs in hot places like deserts, or hot countries. This is how it works:
During the day when it is hot, the rock particles on the outside expand (get bigger).
During the night when it is cold, the particles then contract (get smaller).
This happens over millions of years, forcing the rock to crack, and for bits to break off.
Rock World!!
There are many types of rocks, and many ways of them to be weathered, but the two main ones that a 13 year old
needs to know is freeze-thaw,and onion skin weathering.
Freeze-Thaw Weathering!
Freeze-Thaw weathnering mainly occurs in cold places, like in the mountains.
When it rains, water gets into cracks in the mountainous rock.
It then freezes, and then expands (gets bigger).
This happens over many years, and forces the rock to crack, and break off. This is highly dangerous to rock climbers.
