| Why a Kangaroo? In 1936, the editors of the student newspaper at UMKC (then University of Kansas City) proposed a Kangaroo mascot for the debate team. They might have been inspired by the Kansas City Zoo's acquisition of two young kangaroos. Former Kansas City resident Walt Disney helped popularize the idea by drawing a kangaroo (above) for a campus magazine. The drawing has a slight resemblance to Mickey Mouse. No wonder UMKC's mascot has evolved into something that looks like a deformed rodent with pockets. Link to UMKC fight song |
