Father was among the oldest men in the community in which he lived. He was one of those hard working Germans who make their life count for some thing in the world. The later years of his life he spent with his daughter, Mrs Hoss, where he enjoyed the quiet and comfort of a country home.
As an infant, the deceased was dedicated to his savior through the sacramment of Holy Baptism, and as is the custom in the Evangelical Lutheran church, was instructed in the doctrines of God's word at the age of about 14 years and made public confession of his faith through the rite of confirmation. Resting upon the imperishable word, his faith was a source of great comfort to him in his last days of sickness and distress. He could cheerfully say: 'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thy rod and they staff, they comfort me.'

"Shoemaker- At the residence of her grandmother, Mrs Mary Gledhill, near Middletown, Crawford Co., Ohio, with whom she has lived ever since her orphanage. Martha, eldest daughter of John and Esther Shoemaker, of typhoid fever, on the 10th of Sep 1873, at the age of 14 yrs, 1 month, 6days.
It is right to remember only the virtues of the dead and though it is very common in such notices as this to heap up eulogies to their memory, I cannot forebear to add as a tribute to the remembrance of this dear child that though I knew her all her life, and was placed over her as Supt and teacher in SS, and teacher in the common school, she never looked in my face without a smile. And she was the same to every one as to me.
To her natural unaffected winningness was added all the charms of the christian grace. Jesus won the hearts of 11 of my little Sabbath girls three years ago and Mar [sic] was one of them. And now, so soon, has her redeemed spirit gone 'sweeping through the gates' into the Emerald City. May her sweet example draw us all Heavenward. [Written by R. Cowden" Bcy Journal, Fr Sep 26, 1873
