"Paul O. Landis, 73, of 437 Plymouth St., a life resident of Bucyrus, died at 7:50 pm Tues in Comm Hosp. He was seriously ill six weeks. Born Aug 20, 1895, he was a son of John F. and Cornella Magers Landis. On July 2, 1925, he married Lorena Marie Pontius and she survives. A WW1 veteran.... retired eight yrs ago, he was employed by the WA Riddell Co., as a machinist and later owned the North End Tavern in Bucyrus. He was a member of the First Christian Church. �Florion Loew, of Whetstone township, died of heart disease at his home, on Middletown road, just east of the corporate limits of the city, Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 4:30 pm in the sixtieth year of his age. The funeral will take place Friday, Oct 20, at 9 am at Holy Trinity Catholic church, with burial in the Catholic cemetery on Tiffin street. Mr. Loew was born in the Province of Bohemia, Austria. He came with his wife to this country, and to Bucyrus in 1865. For three years they lived at the home of Henry Wingert on South Sandusky avenue, during which time Mr. Loew worked on the brick yard for Mr. Kroneberger and at such other work as he could secure. About twenty-five years ago he moved to the little farm and has since been engaged in the farming business, and for the past eight years has had connected with it a small dairy, supplying customers in the city with milk from a wagon. �Mrs. Anna Leow, better known as Mrs. Anna Left, died at her home on Woodlawn avenue, near the �overhead bridge� of the Pennsylvania railroad, this morning, at the age of 85 years. She was twice a widow, her first husband, Florian Leow, of Left, dying a number of years ago. Later she was united in marriage to John Stark, who died eight years ago. There were no children. For upwards of 40 years the Left home had been in the same spot on Woodlawn avenue, where she died. Her first husband operated a small farm there and sold milk. Mrs. Leow was an aunt of Martin Teynor of Dean street, and the Teynor boys here are her nearest relatives. "The Rev. Jacob Elmer Lutz, 85, retired Evangelical United Brethren minister, died Monday afternoon in his home at 952 Lockbourne Rd, near Columbus. Rev. Lutz served in the ministry for more than 48 years. His first assignment was at Clearcreek, Ohio, in 1902. In 1950, he retired at the age of 77 from his last assignment at Philo, Ohio. The minister served 18 years in the Sandusky Conference and 10 years in Michigan. From 1937 to 1950, he was in the Southeastern Ohio Conference of E. U. B. While in Michigan, Rev Lutz was pastor of the Trinity E. U. B. Church of Detroit. He came to Columbus following his retirement. Surviving his death are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Mrs Dean C. Eager, New York City; four sons, Raymond E. and O. Orr, both of Columbus; Willis M., Detroit, Mich; and O. W. Lutz, New York; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, many of which reside in Fairfield County. Services will be held Friday, 10 am, in the Washington Ave E. U. "Miss Ella Magers, 79, a sister of the late Mrs J. W. Robertson, of Lima, died at her home, 228 S. Metcalf St., at 3 pm Friday after a few weeks' illness. She was born in Crawford-co, May 5, 1858. She attended Northwestern univ. and was graduated from the Zanesville hospital school of nursing, and was a member of the St. Luke's Lutheran Church and an active member of the Missionary society. Miss Magers spent 30 years in active service in Cleveland until coming to Lima three years ago. Surviving are a sister, Mrs Eugenia Knisely, with whom she made her home; several nieces and nephews, one of whom is Miss Hazel Robertson of Lima. .... the remains will be taken to Bucyrus for burial..... in the Oakwood Cemetery. "James Magers, a well known Sandusky township farmer, died Monday of pneumonia at his home in Crawford County. His death is a peculiarly sad one. Mr. Magers' son died about three weeks ago, and the father becoming worried about the farm work worked beyond his strength. Born July 8, 1866 in Sandusky Twp., she was a daughter of Christian and Catherine Schieber Brown. Feb 12, 1891, she married Lincoln Magers who died in April 1917. She was a member of the Loss Creek Lutheran Church. Surviving are children, Charles E. Magers at home and Mrs Ethel Eckstein of Vernon Twp. "....Charges were filed against [Virgil C.] Strayer [25 yrs], a driver for the Emery Transportation Co., Chicago, after his semi-trailer truck struck and killed Otto S. Meister, 61, prominent Bucyrus farmer and president of the Zeigler Milling Co. here for the past 25 yrs. The charges were filed by the Bucyrus post of the state highway patrol. Meister was killed instantly along SR 98 near Bucyrus early Thur. The truck tore up about 100 ft of fence and finally jackknifed after it struck a fence gate. Meister's body was found about 14 feet from the road, authorities reported. It was believed Meister was preparing to take some cattle across the road when he was hit. Strayer was uninjured although his truck was badly damaged. Meister was born Sep 8, 1892, in Holmes Tp., the son of John and Elizabeth Luidhardt Meister. He was married on Nov 25, 1917 to Hulda E. Kurtz, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Robert, John, and James, all of Liberty Tp., two bros.... and four grandchildren. He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church.... "Isaac A. Merchant, president of the City National Bank, and one of the city's influential citizens, died unexpectedly at his home, No 572 East Center St., this morning at 12:45 o'clock. Death was due to hemorrhages of the stomach superinduced by cancer. Early Mon morning, it was reported in the downtown district that Mr Merchant had died... Dr CT Wiant, the attending physician, remained with him until 12:30 o'clock this morning. When the doctor was leaving, he said he thought Mr Merchant would live several hours. Fifteen minutes later, he died. He had suffered another homorrhage, the sixth one that he had had during the day. Mr Merchant was conscious almost to the last. Death came so unexpectedly that no farewells were expressed, although his wife and daughter, Mrs John S. Kilbury, were in the house.... Last Fri, Mr Merchant made a trip to his farm. Sat afternoon he was at his desk a short time at the bank and down town again Sat evening. He had been bedfast only since Mon morning. The funeral services will be held at Epworth church.... Isaac A. Merchant was born in Marion Tp., Marion Co., May 26, 1844 and was a son of the late John T. and Rebecca A. Gruber Merchant, his father having located in the county in 1836. For a number of years following his schooling, Mr. Merchant was interested in agricultural pursuits, which included the raising of fine livestock. At the time of death he owned much valuable farm property and considerable city property.... Oct 24, 1867 Mr Merchant was united in marriage to Frances E. Haines, daughter of L. C. and Ellen Began [sic] Haines, who survives, together with one daughter, Mrs John S. Kilbury of this city. With his family, Mr Merchant belonged to the Epworth ME church, to which he has given generous support for many years. IN politics, he had always been a Republican.... "Galion- The death of Philip Metzger, 94, early Monday morning at the Veterans' hospital in Dayton, took Galion's last Civil war veteran, and the last survivor of the 26th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The body was brought to Galion late Monday to the Volk funeral home where services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 pm. Burial will be made here. Mr Metzger went to Dayton from Galion last May. Prior to that time he had lived with his daughter, Mrs Grey W. Whitesell of Galion. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs Whitesell, a son, Chalmer Metzger of Toledo, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. ..... "Galion- Kenneth Gene Miller, 28, died at 2:10 pm Sunday in Galion City Hospital where he had been admitted on Sep 13 for treatment of a fracured leg suffered as a result of a fall from the roof of a house he was building for his family. Death resulted suddenly from the development of an embolism. A resident of Galion his entire life, Mr Miller was born Mar 3, 1922, a son of Roy R. and Mary Shumaker Miller. He was a graduate of Galion High School with the class of 1940 and attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin. On Nov 10, 1946 he married the former Johanna Bollerer. Both his parents and wife survive him. Other survivors include his son, Tommy, at home; 4 brothers, Robert Miller of Galion, Dale Miller of Columbus, Richard Miller at home, and Albert Miller of Galion; and one sister, Mrs Elizabeth Mae Bower of Columbus. "Mrs. P. E. (Leafy) Miller, 90, of 421 Hillcrest Drive, died at 5:25 a.m. Friday in Van Wert County Hospital. She had been seriously ill for three months. A daughter of Henry and Catherine (Bechtol) Kelly, she was born June 30, 1878 in Van Wert. She was married to Clyde Armstrong, and after his death was married to Perry Miller, who is deceased. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. August (Helen) Wild, and Mrs. Harold (Nelle) Clifton, both of Hillcrest Drive; three step-children, Caros E. Miller of Ervin Road, Mrs. Harold (Charlotte) Osborn of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. C. A. (Elnora) Lynch of Toledo; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A daughter and two sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 10am Monday at the Alspach Funeral Home, Dr. Wheaton P. Webb to officiate. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery. Obituary Summary Bucyrus Journal 8-22-1879 and 8-29-1879: Geneseo, IL- John Moderwell, Esq., was a resident of Crawford County, Ohio for 48 years, during which time he was a prominent Bucyrus citizen. He died at 9 o'clock on 8-17-1879, a few hours before the dawn of his 79th birthday. He was born Washington County, PA on 8-18-1800, and came to Bucyrus in 1824. He moved to Geneseo, IL in April 1872. He was the father of Major Moderwell, who was severely injured in the Civil War. John Moderwell was a Whig and a Presbyterian, having joined the church at the age of 50. He brought up three children: Major EC Moderwell, attorney-at-law, John a druggist, both living in Geneseo, IL, and Miss Lizzie who lives at the parental home. John Moderwell expressed repeated desire to pass away before his wife, stating he �would miss her so much, and she would have tender care when he would be gone.�
"ER Kearsley, Esq, receive a telegram from his wife at Geneseo IL, announcing the death of Mrs John Moderwell, in the 86th year of her age. The deceased was well known here, and was one of the early pioneers of Bucyrus, coming here with her husband in 1823-6. Here they remained until a dozen years ago when they removed to Geneseo, IL, where a few years ago John Moderwell died, and now his wife follows him. During their late years in Bucyrus their home was where Mrs Judge Scott now resides. The deceased was a member of the Presby. church, and was well known for mer many good deeds to her poorer neighbors, none being turned from her door with an empty hand, and she was ever anxious to make some worthy person happy. To Mrs ER Kearsley she gave a mother's love and care, and losing her only daughter a few years ago, her last days were tenderly watched by Mrs Kearsly with all the devotion of a daughter." "Death of J. W. Moderwell. James Watson Moderwell was born in VA 4-8-1812. He was the son of William and Elloner Moderwell (nee Watson). He had 3 bros. and one sister. He moved to Ohio with his parents, when a small boy, and spent his boyhood days, principally, in Whetstone Tp., of this county, clearing away the mighty forest. At an early age, he worked at carpentering, assisting in building a number of houses and barns. Two of the houses were standing, until recently, and one yet remains, northeast of Bucyrus, on the Sulphur Springs Road, on the farm of Mrs. McCracken. The one, recently torn down by S L Hise, he put up for William McCurdy, not receiving any pay direct but to get time extended on the removal of some timber. James Watson Moderwell was married, October 16, 1834 to Mary Peterman, and they were the parents of seven children, as follows: Martha Ann, resides with her mother, Harrison, died about four years ago, Margery, also deceased, William now resides near North Robinson, Barbara Ellen, died about age 8, James Q., also deceased, and Jemima, now Mrs. J. A. Smith. After working at the carpenter trade for some years, he changed his business. He commenced by buying a lot of turkeys, but no one ever knew the result of this venture. He then began buying stock, and made a grand success, accumulating a fortune. He, at one time (about the year 1863) owned about 800 acres of land. This land he divided among his children, and lived with his family until 1872. He then went to Indiana, where he lived seven or eight years, returning to Crawford County, where he remained until his death." Crawford County News, 5-17-1888
"Dropped Dead, Aunt Polly Moderwell who lived in Liberty Tp., near the Crall Church, suddenly dropped dead this morning about 5 o'clock, suppsed to be the result of acute heart disease. She was visited by relatives from this city a few days ago, and appeared in her usual health, though as she was about 70 years of age she of course was not very strong. She was contemplating a return visit to thse same friends this week or next, when the messenger so suddenly came. The funeral will occur tomorrow at 2 p.m. She leaves three children, Martha, residing at home, Mrs. John Smith on the farm near her, Wm. Moderwell of North Robinson; three children are dead, one daughter and two sons. Yesterday she paid a visit to her daughter a few rods away to see about a dress. This morning she arose a trifle later than usual, and after washing herself, turned to reach for the towel, she raised her head, gave a short, sharp scream, and dropped over dead." "Harry English, 54, former lessee and house manager of the Auditorium theater, died Saturday night in his home, 17 East Railroad street. He had been ailing for some time with heart trouble and death came while he slept. He came to Newark in 1910 and had since made his home here. In 1913 he became associated with Robert A. White and the late August Meier in the leasing of the Auditorium theater which had been under the management of Ed Moore. Mr. English assumed the position of house manager, which he held for two years. He resigned to take a position with the Fox Film corporation with which he remained for several years and while in their employ produced a film in Chicago, Ill. Born Clayton Moderwell Sep 25, 1881, in Bucyrus, the son of James Quimby and Charity (Quaintance) Moderwell, he chose the name Harry English when he became engaged in theatrical work. He attended the Bucyrus schools and when a boy was employed as a grocery clerk. When 19 years of age he joined a circus and later entered the theatrical business where he remained for years as manager, puobery? man and advance agent for several companies. He was a member of the Elks lodge. Surviving are his widow, formerly Miss Antoinette Murphy of Columbus, to whom he was married in 1915. He also leaves one brother, Perry Earl Moderwell of Bucyrus Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in the home. Rev. S. M. "Galion--Funeral services for Frank B. Moore, 73, who died Wed morning at City Hospital will be held Sat at 2 pm.... Burial will be made in Fairview Cemetery.... A heart attack caused the sudden death of Mr Moore at 9:55 am, in the hospital where he had been admitted, Mon morning, after suffering a heart attack. Born in Union City, O., Nov 26, 1876, a son of Joseph and Emma Jane Purkey Moore, Mr Moore came to Galion with his family many years ago. He was a machinist by trade, retiring a number of years ago from the Galion Iron Works and Manufacturing Co. Prior to his employment there, he was employed at the Pennsylvania Railroad shops at Crestline. On Feb 11, 1898 he was married Belinda Elizabeth Schreck who died in 1931. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs Mervin Christman of Galion; Mrs Rufus Eckstein of Cuyahoga Falls; Mrs Garland Shumaker of Madison, NJ; three grandchildren; one sister...." "Galion, July 18-- Mrs Martha Belle Morrow, wife of Ira A Morrow, died this morning at her home three miles west of here after an illness of several months with leakage of the heart.... Burial will be made in Olentangy Cemetery. She was born in Crawford Co. June 5, 1865, the daughter of John and Catherine Shumaker. She was married in 1898. Surviving are the husband, three children, Otto of Galion and Charles and Miss Ollie at home; one sister Mrs Frank Tracht of the Bucyrus road. She was a member of the Olentangy church." "Funeral services for Ira A. Morrow, 79, former resident of Galion and vicinity, ... burial will be made in the Olentangy Cemetery west of Galion. Mr Morrow died at 3 am Tues., at his home near Nevada. He had been in poor health several years but confined to his bed only since Sunday. A native of Crawford Co., Mr Morrow was born June 30, 1871 the son of William and Catherine Laughbaum Morrow. He was married in 1898 to Belle Shumaker who died July 18, 1931. Surviving are three children Otto Morrow and Mrs Argale Swartz of Galion and Carl Morrow of near Crestline, 5 grandchildren and 3 brothers... Mr Morrow was a retired farmer and had been a resident of Wyandot Co. for the past 6 months." Marion Star, 13 Sep 1950
"Mrs Otto Morrow. Galion- Mrs Minnie A. Morrow, 67, of Galion, died at 8pm Wed in Galion Comm Hosp. where she was admitted earlier in the day. She had been in failing health two months. Born July 1, 1905, in Banner Springs, Tenn., to Miles and Ann Ramsey Gray, she was married May 15, 1927, to Otto Morrow, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Ray of Kenton and Howard of RR 8, Lexington; 6 grandchildren, a brother.... She came to Galion 48 years ago from Banner Springs and was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church where she taught Sunday school for 40 years.... Burial will be in Crawford Co. Memorial Gardens..." "Mrs Edna Morrow, 85, of Bucyrus, died at 7:30 at her home. Her husband, Harry W., died in 1946. She was a Leesville native. Born Jan 6, 1894, she was a daughter of Richard B and Alice Ashcroft Hiltner. She was a member of Leesville United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Paul of Monroeville and Rollin of Bucyrus; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and a brother Harvey Hiltner of Galion. A son, a brother and a sister are deceased. ...Burial will be in Brokensword Cemetery.." Marion Star, 18 March 1969
"Bucyrus-- Shannon C. Morrow, 68, who lived at the fairgrounds here, died at 2:10 am Sunday at Community Hospital. He had suffered a stroke and was admitted to the hospital Saturday noon. A native of Jefferson Tp., he was born May 2, 1888 to Alex and Alice Reynold [sic] Morrow. He was never married and was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Two brothers survive. They are Walter Morrow of Pasadena, Calif. and George of Amherst, O. Mr Morrow was a laborer and a lifetime resident of the area. Services.... Rev. E.A. Eigenrauch of the Hope E. and R. "Ashely-- Mrs. V. S. Westbrook has received word of the death of her father, James E. Morton, 79, which occurred last night at the home of another daughter, Mrs. B. W. Richardson in Little Rock, Ark. Mr. Morton, who made his home with his children, went to Little Rock last fall. His wife died eight years ago. Surviving with the daughters are a brother, John Morton of North Robinson, a sister, Miss Elizabeth Morton of Leesville and six grandchildren. The body is being sent to Galion for burial."
