John W. Bogan, one of the aged and highly respected citizens of Bucyrus, passed from earth to the life beyond Monday night at 12:15 oclock, aged 74 years, and 20 days. Death resulted from a stroke of paralysis, caused by cerebral hemorrhage, which he suffered Monday morning. The funeral was held from the residence, corner of East Renesslaer and Iron streets, at 10 oclock Thurs afternoon, Rev S. A. Straws conducting the services. Interment in Oakwood cemetery.
John W. Bogan was born Feb 12, 1828 in Virginia. When quite young he came to Ohio with his family, and has resided in Crawford County since a young man. He was a farmer by occupation, and lived during the greater part of his active life in Whetstone and Liberty townships. He was married in 1870 to Candess Ferrall, who survives him. One son, Harry, and a daughter, Cora, are also left to mourn the loss of their father. In 1878 Mr Bogan retired from the active labor of farming and removed to this city, where he pleasantly and quietly lived out his days. He still retained his farm property, and found quite sufficient occupation in looking after his interests.
In all his associations Mr. Bogan won the regard and esteem of those with whom he came in contact. He was a fond husband, a devoted father, a kind neighbor, and good citizen, a man among men. He lived in usefulness and honor beyond the allotted span of human life, and his death is sincerely mourned by his family, neighbors, and friends.
His health has been failing for the past two years, and very perceptibly so during the last year, from a disease of the kidneys. This winter he has been laid up from its effects, but no immediate danger was apprehended until the stroke of paralysis came, the precursor of death which supervened in a few hours. Crawford County Forum, 3-5-1897

Mrs Bogan was born in Stark Co., Ohio, May 16, 1821, her maiden name being Charlotte Bowers. She was married to Samuel Bogan November 12, 1838. Thirty-one grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several brothers and sisters, and a wide circle of other relatives remain to mourn the loss of Mrs Bogan. The deceased was taken ill early in the spring and for ten weeks friends have watched by her bedside as she seemed to waver and hang between life and death; but the physicians who attended her could ot understand her case, and at her death a request was made by Dr. Bevington for a post mortem examination, which was held by Doctors Bevington and Carrothers, of Annapolis, Sheckler of Wingert's Corners, and Sexauer of this place. What the examination revealed we cannot tell, not being conversant with the terms used by the profession. On Sunday, the day appointed for the funeral services and burial, a large number of relatives and neighbors gathered at the house to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The funeral services were conducted by Wm. Nevill, who preached from Second Corinthians, V, 1: 'For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an [sic] house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.' Abraham Young, Dunkard preacher of Sulphur Springs, also spoke of the certainty of death and the necessity of preparing for death. After the services the remains were interred in the Luke Cemetery."
