| John Garrett Ramsey was born on May 5, 1861, in Marshall, County of Madison, N.C. He died on March 7,1938. He died suddenly about 11:30 Monday morning at the office of Dr J. N. Moore of Marshall. We understand that he had attended services the day before and he had made a talk, as was his custom. He had a hand carved tombstone from rock found on the property erected in the Ramsey graveyard so that there was no guestion as to where and how he wished his body to be disposed of. He had been making his home for several years with his son, Jerrry Ramsey, about two miles south of Marshall. He found himself not feeling well and walked up to the office of Dr. Moore. Miss Revis, a trained nurse in Dr Moore's office, saw that his condition was serious. Dr. Moore was attending a patient in the country. Dr Sams was called immediately. By the time Dr. Sams could reach the side of the suffering man, he fell over and expired. His body was taken to Rector Undertaking Establishment and later in the day was taken to the home of Jerry Ramsey, and placed in the casket which had been prepared by order of the deceased. He is surivied by one daughter, Mrs Zade Ponder, one son Mr. Jerry Ramsey, two sisters Mrs. Ross Redmond and Mrs Rachel Ramsey of Murphy, quite a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. |

| Mr Ramsey was one of Marshall's best Citizens. More than 30 years ago he made his home at Marshall, moving from the country. He started business selling general merchandise in connection with a meat market. Later he had the only meat market in Marshall. About ten or twelve years ago he spent a large amount of money on what is now the New Central Hotel and built the nice brick residence on the south side of the river, which was later owned by Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Ditmore. The depression followed these ventures and all this property went into other hands. However, his circumstances were not such as to compel him to work for a living, but his son tells us he prefered to be active. He was, therefore at his work when stricken.
