Toor Daal (Split Pigeon Peas) ***************************** This is my mom's way of making Toor Daal. Its easy and simply delicious. It goes with Plain cooked rice. Serving: 4 Ingredients: ------------ 1.5 cup Toor Daal 5-6 Curry leaves 2 Green chillies (chopped) 1 tsp Turmeric 1 or 2 chopped tomatoes (medium size) 1 tsp Cumin Seeds 1 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp asafoetida 1/4th cup chopped cilantro 2 tbsp coriander powder 2 tbsp sugar or jaggery (preferred but optional) Salt to taste 2-3 tbsp oil Method ------------ Wash toor daal with cold water 2-3 times, drain that water. Pressure cook 1.5 cup Toor Daal with 3 cups of water. This will take around 20 minutes, 3 whistles and then let the pressure cooker cool off. Take a deep utensil, heat oil, once the oil is hot, add mustard and cumin seeds and allow them to crackle. Add green chillies, coriander powder and curry leaves (tear them into 2 each for flavor) and fry for a minute or so. Add asafoetida, chopped tomatoes, sugar/jaggery, turmeric and cooked toor daal. Add 2-3 cups of water, cilantro and salt to taste. Give it a boil for about 10 minutes. Daal is done, serve it hot with plain rice.
