Spicy Dal: This is a special dal in a way that it is made out of differenct spices. Some of them are not a part of the regular type of dal that is always made. Ingredients (for 4 servings): -------------- 3/4 cup toor dal 3/4 cup yellow moong daal 6-7 cloves 1 tsp turmeric 3-4 chopped garlic cloves 3-4 green chillies chopped (or less if desired less spicy) 3 onions (cut lengthwise) 1 tbsp garam masala (available in Indian stores) Salt to taste 1 tbsp sugar (optional) 3 tbsp oil Method: --------- Mix the daals together and wash them under running cold water. Strain and pressure cook the dal with double the quantity of water in a pressure cooker. You can also cook the dal without using pressure cooker. For this, its better to soak the dal for 2 hours in water and then boil it in a closed vessel with enough water. Add more water if needed. In a deep utensil, heat oil. Once the oil is hot, add onions and caramelize. This will give a sweet flavor to dal. Add cloves and garam masala to the caramelized onions. Roast the mixture for a minute or two. Add the cooked dal in this mixture and add 2 cups of water. Keep it for a boil. Add salt and more sugar (if desired). Serve hot with plain white rice.
