Modee Daal
Back
A very simple basic recipe using LENTILS As it was mentioned, this is my first test with limited spices. I would use NONE. The lentil used this time is SPLIT RED LENTILS (Salmon colored Pink Lentils) - Indian name would be LAAL MASOOR DAAL. Daal meaning lentil. This preparation comes from the indian state of Gujarat, and therefore has a little bit of sugar in it. Its called MODEE DAAL in Gujarat. ****************************************** Primary need: ------------- Pressure Cooker - Hawkins or Prestige Brand (3 litres would be fine). Option could be Microwave heating, I guessed one needs to cook the daal in water for 20 mins, not sure though. Cooking for 3: Time: 20 mins for preparation No. of Pots used: 2 ONLY -------------- 1 cup lentils (either split red lentils or yellow lentils (toor daal)) salt (depending on taste) 2 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp cumin seeds Wash lentils with cold running water thrice. Put lentils in the pressure cooker. Pour 2.5 cups of water. 1 tbsp salt and pressure cook. Give 4 whistles. Take pressure cooker off the flame/coil and let it cool (this takes about 15-20 mins to cool) Take a deep vessel, Warm it on the flame, put butter and let the butter heat, add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add lentils (pressure cooked), add 2 cups of water, salt and sugar and give it a nice boil. Lentil's done. This is the simplest form of lentils.
