Melanie's Little Corner of the Web
I'm a small town girl who's trying to adjust to working in the big city of Topeka, KS. I started a new job in the state capital on Oct. 3rd, 2005, and am enjoying it even though it gets a little crazy during the legislative session. It's a nice change of pace from the Washington County News, where I worked last summer. I grew up in Yates Center, a town of about 1800 in southeast Kansas, home of the only stoplight in Woodson County (and it's just a blinking red light - not a red, yellow, green one).

I barrel race during the summers, and currently have  two horses, a 13-year-old QH-thoroughbred gelding named Joker, and a 4-year-old quarter horse gelding named Chance. Chance is my barrel horse of the future, and I'll spend most of my summer getting him solid on the pattern, then we'll get to start really competing next year.

In college, I was a three-time Academic All-American, once in cross-country and twice in track. My sophomore year, I won the conference  championship in the heptathlon, after being the runner-up in the indoor pentathlon. Finished 10th in the nation in the hep at the outdoor meet in Levelland, Texas.

My brothers have three horses - a 3 year old mare "Annie" who they compete in performance classes on, an 11 year old mare "Diamond" who Kyle rides in timed events, and an 11 year old gelding "KC" aka "Chief", who Brett will ride in timed events next summer. KC is the newest addition, and he's proving to be a good investment for the boys.
Kyle is a senior at Yates Center High School in southeast Kansas, and Brett's a fourth grader.

I'm a 2001 graduate of YCHS, a 2003 graduate of Highland Community College, and (finally) a 2005 graduate of Pittsburg State University with a double major in Communication-Public Relations and Political Science.

Kyle was a member of the varsity cross-country team last fall and is the Vice President of the YCHS FFA Chapter. He's also a member of the yearbook staff and the Piqua 4-H Club, where he currently serves as President. Kyle was also the November Student of the Month at YCHS! He plans to attend Cloud County Community College next fall and major in agriculture. He'll be a member of the CCCC horse judging team as well. Kyle was the top individual in the Agribusiness Management contest at Coffeyville Community College's Aggie Day in early April.
Chance and I on our way to 6th in the 3D. KBRA show at North Topeka Saddle Club, August 5, 2006.  He's well on his way to becoming a solid winning barrel horse. Rodeos here we come!!
My mom is the URA Secretary-Treasurer and my entire family helps her out in the office and at the annual finals rodeo, which was held Oct. 13-15 in Topeka. My dad is a two-time United Rodeo Association bull riding champion, and also has the 1990 URA all-around title on his rodeo resume. He currently judges URA and MRCA (Missouri Rodeo Cowboys Association) rodeos across the Midwest.

Whenever I can, I take updated standings to URA rodeos across the Midwest. In 2005, I traveled with my then-boyfriend Billy, but I guess I'll have to go solo in 2006, as Billy has moved to western Kansas and probably won't make too many URA rodeos.
