Jack Elam was one of my western favorites for one thing & Tangle Eye is what my father-in-law calls him. I have astigmatism, had cataract surgery, and wear a pair of glasses that makes an optometrist scratch his head in puzzlement (trifocal in one eye and bifocal-looking in the other) . So - my eyes are pretty tangled up as it is. BUT - the Good Lord has still given me vision enough to shoot and hit most of the time.
My Tangle Eye character came out of the War of Northern Aggression from his home in central Alabama.
He moved west when his wife died shortly thereafter. Working his way along on farms, cattle and horse ranches, and as a teamster, he ended up in Texas where he served with the Texas Rangers. It was there that Ron found a liking for law enforcement, or what passed for law enforcement in that wild and unsettled time.
From Texas, Tangle Eye worked his way north into the Dakotas and on to Montana. He left formal law enforcement and began working as a regulator and bounty hunter. He became known as a person who was quick on the trigger (rather shoot than fight, some say) and was not hesitant to use his substantial arsenal on any who intended him harm or who stood between him and the man he pursued.
