GRAHAMS PIT ... NUMBER 9

I painted this picture from an old sepia photograph, it is a view looking down Market street towards the Town Clock.   In the background is Number 9 or Grahams Pit. Grahams pit was originally named Edward James first Class Pit.  The area is now a council housing estate and an industrial estate. To the left of the clock is The Black Prince Inn, the inn was a meeting place for some of the Chartists, they met here on their ill fated march on Newport on a cold wet night in November 1839.  The site is now occupied by the Tredegar Library.
