UNDER FLOOR HEATING
I recently built a conservatory
as an extension to my house. I live in the Welsh mountains on the
side of an exposed hill so the heating had to be adequate especially in
view of the fact that the conservatory is glass to the ground. There
was no room for a radiator and electric fan heaters are noisy and expensive
to run. The solution had to be under floor heating. I could
not find any reasonable information on under floor heating so armed with
what I could find I decided to experiment. The experiment was an
absolute success so I thought I would share it with anyone trying to find
information. The technical department of Hepworth Company were a
great help.
Underfloor
Heating
Place 50mm of polystyrene insulation
on top of concrete sub floor.
Lay steel concrete reinforcing
mat on top of the polystyrene. This is to fix pipe clips to it also
helps reinforce the screed on top of the polystyrene.
Fix plastic pipe clips to the steel
mat. I used insulation tape (See photo) it doesn't matter its only
to hold the pipe until the screed sets.
Coil the pipe in large circles
about 300mm apart until you reach the centre of the room.
Loop back at 300mm intervals in
between the previous loops (see photo) this means that the pipes are now
150mm apart.
(HEPWORTH HEP20 PIPE.) Tip (IF
YOU ARE CONNECTING TO AN EXISTING COPPER PIPE SYSTEM USE HEP20 BARRIER
PIPE)
It is very important that the pipes
are coated liberally in diluted PVA glue. This is to ensure that
the screed adheres to the pipe. Any gaps will act as an insulator
and defeat the object.
Cover the pipes in a 75mm sand
and cement screed. Make sure the screed is compacted underneath the
pipes to prevent the floor from cracking.
Cover with floor tiles: The
result is amazing.
There are no cold areas to the
floor therefore there are no down draughts. The floor stays warm
until the early hours of the morning.
It is quite simple to zone the
system from your existing system if necessary though I have not found it
expensive to run.

If I ever build my own house I will certainly install under floor heating.
